Could not find a thread on this for the life of me, so I'll start one, even though I won't be able to make it(and for me to want to go to it, which is never, I really find it has some great bands playing). So today was the 3rd announcement of bands, and its actually lining up to be very nice IMO, especially headliner-wise.

    Slipknot
    Marilyn Manson
    Prodigy
    Def Leppard
    Whitesnake
    ZZ Top
    Motley Crue
    Korn
    Limp Bizkit
    Pendulum
    Trivium
    Killswitch Engage
    Dragonforce
    DevilDriver

So yeah, thats it so far. Leppard, whitesnake and zz Top on one day is brilliant. Journey will probably be playing that day too. and maybe motley crue that day...reeling in the years or what?

I know I'd probably go to it if I was around.

If it doesnt sell out by mid-April then I'll spend some of me 12st money on a tickets..thatd mean Rock im Park and then Download one week after the other
Did Download in '07, class time - gave it a miss last year due to a terrible line-up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 172 ✭✭xo_CHEWY_ox

this will be my first year going to download, can anyone give me some help especially about the cost, how much will the flights be and would i need to be there on the wednesday to get a camping spot?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 741 ✭✭✭pingu_girl

Went last year the line up was dodgy enough but the craic was great and no clashes for me, much better run festival than any irish one I've been too. Definitely going again this year! I've been waiting to see limp bizkit since 1999! they never played in Ireland , had tickets to see them when they were supposed to play here in 2001 tho :(

Flights from Dublin are €65 return to east mid lands at the moment on ryanair and its only a tenner taxi to the venue from there. Payed about the same last year going from cork but that flight seems to be cancelled.

Arrived on mid Thursday last year and we got a decent spot but there was only 2 of us sharing a tent if you were going with a large group id recommend going Wednesday to get a good patch also get the earlyest flights home on the Monday and go straight to the airport after the bands finish, its not pretty on Sunday night.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Will come to around €250 for flights + tickets depending on how early you get in for cheap flights.

You'll get a camping spot Thursday morning-afternoon without a problem but you certainly won't have your pick of spots and if you're in a big group you'll have a hard enough time finding a virgin patch (although it is possible as they only open up certain sites on the Thursday).

You can taxi, walk or bus it from the airport, get the bus (especially on the way back as you'll be scalped on taxi prices from the arena).

Wasn't mad about the lineup last year alright but had a great time regardless.

would rather head to rock im park again, lot of the same acts and way way better in so many ways. I dont get why you would go to both rock im park and download either. Worse still some idiots at rock im park last year going to rock im park one day and rock am ring another! its the same line-up!

Wasondering when they would be announced. If they are put behind the likes of Billy F'in Talent again, it really is an outrage.

    Dream Theater
    Billy Talent
    Buckcherry

Same as a few other festivals, not only Download. Knew they went around every few years, but this is an exceptionally short gap of time.

Yea thats what ive been thinking. Bands these days are going back to the studio quicker so they can go back on tour(since these days touring is where the money is)

Guys, thinking of going to this..this year.
Has anyone here been before? Just want to know if there is anywhere nearby over there to get beer? I know the site is 10mins from the airport, but dont particularly want to give ryanair another reason to ride us having already done so on bag charges.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 6,817 ✭✭✭jenizzle

Am I the only one who thinks this is horribly expensive?!

Chris Cornells new hip hop stuff should go down well at this :pac:

Yup, I went last year. You can get drink from the airport shop and head straight to download on the bus right outside the front door, but we just got a few drinks to tie us over until we set up our tents, got in and all that jazz :D then we went to the local shop, bit of a walk, prob 15-20 mins from the front gate I think... We got a taxi to the supermarket and stocked up on food and all for cheap though and a taxi back so we didn't have dead arms by the time we got back! :D

Ah cheers Doc. Ill sorted the beer out over there so!
So you would recommend it then as a festival ya?

Any issues with bags on ryanair? Bringing tents and all that jazz?

Yea, it's a great festival, the lineup wasn't that great last year, and had a great time, it looks pretty good this year though! It's better than any Irish festival I've been to.

No issues with the bags... can't remember who I flew with though, I just had everything in a big gym bag and a backpack (hint: definatly bring something with wheels!!) There's showers and all over there so you can still have a wash and all.

For those who have been on previous years, which day is a good day to get there? I don't wanna get there on the Wednesday and have nothing to do for 3 days, and don't wanna get there on the Friday and end up camping way down the back, miles away from the arena.

So you're asking if you should go Thursday then?

If you can get there late wednesday/early thursday you'll get a grand camping spot ( as long as you're just worrying about 1 tent) and between getting drink, setting up tent, and wandering around the stalls/tents etc that are open you wont be bored either!

I went on wednesday last year and it was pretty good, just got drunk :D Setting up the tent was easy too, there was only a few people around us when we got there, it was packed by thursday. I can't remember there being loads to do on the wednesday, but there was on the thursday. We stocked up on supplies on the wednesday too so we didn't have to spend that much at the festival I'd recommend going on the wednesday, but it's really up to yourself.

NOTE TO EVERYONE GOING!! When your at the concerts, get the giant yorshire puddings!! they kick ass and keep you going through the day! Best food ever!! :P

Might go on a day trip to this. Leave the tent at home, do an all-nighter and get the first flight home. Convenient how East Midlands Airport is right beside Castle Donington with the cheap goodness of Ryanair.

No day tickets are available as of yet but my one question would be: do you reckon I could get into the camping area with a day ticket pass? Are there stringent checks into the camping area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,656 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

    Opeth AND Meshuggah:eek:

Of all the summers to be missing European festivals:(

When I was there in '04 and '07 they were pretty strict alright, they would check for bands when walking between campsites etc.

Was thinkin bout goin over just for FNM and Korn on the Friday meself.

With a truly impressive bill of top rock acts from all over the world already in place for this year’s DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL AT DONINGTON PARK, we’re proud to announce another seventeen acts to join the likes of Faith No More, Slipknot, Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Trivium at this year’s event, taking place 12-14 June.

Returning to Download are US metal-core outfit HATEBREED, pop-punkers A DAY TO REMEMBER, Century Media darlings IN THIS MOMENT, Northern Irish rockers THERAPY?, US metallers GOD FORBID, Swedish rockers BACKYARD BABIES and new Brit metallers HOSTILE.

They are joined by Download first-timers Cali-rockers MIDDLE CLASS RUT, Brit-rockers NO AMERICANA, the Tool-influenced ESOTERICA, deathcore newcomers SUICIDE SILENCE, rock singer TIM ‘RIPPER’ OWENS, Canadian heavy metallers VOIVOD, Nuclear Blast-signed SYLOSIS, electro-rockers TURBOWOLF, and British hardcore outfit WE ARE THE OCEAN.

The only musician so far officially playing two slots at Download this year, will be Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen, who in addition to headlining the Sunday night with his main band, will be also performing the day before with his side project MAN RAZE.

It depends on what thing you picked... :P If you picked to do your pre-book in online then you just do that within 10 days before the flight and bring your email/booking number with you with ID. :D They'll be loads of download people on the flight with you too :p

I sure hope my download ticket arrives on time... XD :P

Put all your clothes and stuff in a shoulder bag and carry it on.
Book one check in bag between 3 or 4 people, and put all the tents into that.

Buy your spirits at the airport shop, or duty free or whatever. Put it all into plastic bottles before you try to get into the festival.

Just buy your crates of beer from the campsite stalls, its not overly expensive, or at least not enough to warrant carrying it from somewhere else.

Oh, and the airport bus will bring you to carpark 7 for free, which is about 5mins from the festival. Just pretend you have a car there.

There is(or at least was in '07) a bus that goes from the festival site to a town about 5/10mins(we walked down took about 25mins) down the road where there is a sainsbury's! will most likely be cheaper and better choice than airport/campsite! Will also let ya get some food for snacking!!

Fair enough Beekay. I didnt find I drank enough cans to warrant the trip thats all. (one crate did me the weekend, i wouldnt be arsed doing the trip to save ten pounds or whatever). I make up for it in pints and spirits dont worry.

LD50: Try to order a "family camping", it worked for me one year when it was sold out.
