People who eat in the library

    Annoying or what?

There's a guy munching away on a packet of Maltesers right now. Well actually he's just finished, but they must have made his mouth dry because now he's drinking something. Not that I have a problem with that, just can't imagine what's wrong with him that he can't do it quietly.

    You are doing it wrong.

You are in first year. ;)

I think the only option for these type of people, the people who use their mobiles in the library (loud), the people who talk loudly in the Lecky and everyone who leaves the sound on their laptops is to be buried alive.

Totally right and legitimate point. Shouldn‘t happen in the library...but...I have to get something off my chest here!!

I constantly tell people in the library to stop talking, get off their phone or put away food if it really is that annoying or protracted (continuous?), and it really annoys that nobody else does this, or at least not enough people. It's either down to the fact that maybe a lot of people can deal better with noise/distractions than myself or that they're afraid of repercussions/ not enough confidence.....now if it's the second, and I'd imagine it is, will you ever get up off your backside and tell the person they're pissing you off and to stop it! It's not like getting the 77n back home on a Saturday night at 3 a.m. and telling somebody to stop taking drugs, or a piss down the back, and being afraid of being stabbed. It‘s TCD Library people know they‘re not meant to talk/eat there and if you say it to them they‘ll realise they‘re being a nuisance and stop, they came to the library for the same reasons as you and might actually like being told to get back to work (very unlikely)!!!.

All-in-all, you have a voice, use it to it's potential and tell people to basically f*ck off if something is happening that you disagree with.

    Christ I sound awfully narky, I swear I'm a nice guy :)

See, I think most of the time it is. Or at least most people don't know how to deactivate it. In my final year it happened enough times to make me make this thread. What I found worse was when someone kept doing something stupid and the 'Critical Stop' sound kept being emitted. Again and again and again.

Almost everyone has an mp3 player/headphones with them. Stick the headphones into the sound jack on your laptop when it's booting and you will not have a problem.

haha you'd think that, the other week I was in the library and some guy was on his laptop and had his earphones in his ears...and the startup sound on his laptop came on, and everyone was kinda looking at him. Then a few minutes passed, no problem...then this sciencey music (duno how else to describe it) started coming from his laptop...he was watching a science video obviously. He didn't move though, even though we could all hear his stuff....then eventually everyone realised that he thought his earphones were plugged into his laptop

    Soooooo funny

Just mute the laptop and then even on startup it won't make a sound. Why would you need to have the sound on around college anyway?

Your laptop may not be capable of muting before Windows is active, and you may have had sound on before going into college. Hence why the startup sound plays so often, whereas others don't.

Also, your brain may not be capable of realising that libraries are Quiet Places.

They should so have a test before they let people into libraries. Do you realise that tearing pages out of books and/or hiding them is tacky? Do you understand that libraries are for reading and studying and not for conducting half-hour gossipy conversations about who did what to whom last night? Do you know how to turn the sound off on your laptop and/or mobile phone? Congratulations, you may now enter...

I eat a big crispy french baguette with crisps and crispy bacon crisp iceberg lettuce wrapped in rustling plastic packaging, and I drink a fizzy bottle of pop with some pistachios on the side. I like to listen to Scooter on my laptop while doing this....with no earphones.

you all sound so uptight. I have absolutely no problem with people eating and drinking in the library (as long as they're not too loud). You shouldn't need to study in absolute silence.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 124 ✭✭petrochemical

When you are concentrating and trying to understand and remember, any distractions are going to annoy your mind more because you're more sensitive at that time. I don't think concentration is a normal state to be in, we are still wired to be alert for human interactions and to look around for predators from our cave man days I think. Just a theory.

Well, the library isn't the place for people to be eating their lunch/chatting with their friends or in fact doing anything other than working or reading or otherwise being quiet...

    People might not want to.

Libraries are generally loud - people walking, turning pages in books, coughing, drinking, whispering etc.., if it is really a problem, buy ear plugs. I doubt they're that expensive.

People might want to sing along to Hanson. Myth and others have every right to be annoyed at needless disruptions.

Libraries are generally far more quiet than any other space which is designed to contain a large group of people. Some noises are unavoidable. Those that are avoidable are a nuisance.

With regards to eating, its not only the noise that bothers me (which can go on for the duration of lent if someone is eating a packet of crisps) but also the smell. Its highly distracting.

You just have to mute before you shut down. There's no way to stop it on a one-time-basis otherwise.

There are plugins to turn off the startup sound entirely - google it!

Come on the sound of a laptop starting up is hardly going to break our concentration. I bring my laptop into the library all the time and maybe once or twice its made the start up noise, and an other time when i was listening to music and my head phones didnt actually plug in its played music aloud. That doesnt mean I should be buried alive, does it? people typing really hard on their keyboards is more head wrecking.
Certain sections of the library dont have these problems as much so go to those areas. Top floors and places without many plugs are good!
also eating in the library is ok if its a silent food like a bar of chocolate, crisps not so much.
also what kind of foods can you smell in the library? (apart from crisps)

Laptop starting up sounds do break some peoples' concentration, otherwise they wouldn't be complaining about it on this thread.

As for food that smells, some people bring in their lunch to eat in libraries. Sandwiches and more substantial stuff.

Why is it so hard for some people to accept that others are pissed off by distractions in the library? Seems like a bit of a non-argument. If a certain action prevents people from studying efficiently, you're hardly going to convince them otherwise by writting something on the interweb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭House of Wolves

is the whole point of these forums not to express your own opinion? People on this have made me more aware that the sound of a laptop can annoy them quite a lot, can it not work vice versa that they can understand why it can happen?

I get really embarrassed when I'm setting up my laptop. The noise when I'm trying to plug it in like clunk clunk bang is just embarrassing. I feel like everyone wants me to STFU and are about to headbutt me! :(

    SORRRRY!!!

BTW, I tried bringing in my internet cable the other day, bloody thing wouldn't work. Anyone got ideas?I got so jealous when I see people beside me online

I think if one person who was making noise in the library was beaten to death with a laptop, then it would serve as a warning to others. Especially if the killer was never caught, and lived on as a legend in the library.

    Just a thought.

I used to do this lots in DIT library. I was working there, so no one ever had the balls to stop me.

I get that too, with my big relic of a laptop that has to be plugged in. I copped onto the headphones into the jack on the side of the laptop thing though after playing the windows startup thing once by accident.

The library should be quiet, some things dont bother me though. Like texting on a phone that's on silent, drinkin, eating something quiet like chocolate, that kind of stuff wouldnt really bother me at all. I can understand how some stuff would annoy people in a library, but there might be a bit of "I'm working hard here and thus am not in the best mood, the slightest thing is going to piss me off" going on. I've had that from time to time.
