Spotted this car at the Ballincollig vintage show last year. It appeared to be an old hearse. Check out the reg. Creepy.

I was sitting outside the Halfway Inn last June after the Innishannon rally and that car cruised into the car park!
I'm not into hearses but I thought that looked pretty groovy!

Groovy car indeed, but that reg!!! Someone must have had a really sick mind when they registered it :-)

Wonder is that its real reg:eek:..surely not?Its a 1962 Clare issue.
I like the hearse, not often you see a Zodiac.Red paint ruins it.

Cartell says its a Ford Unknown.I very much doubt that was its original number, ireland was way too conservative for any undertaker to do something like that surely?
This is a country that wouldnt issue KIP because of its connotations with a brothel.

The cheap red paint ruins it.

Wasn't there an hearse somewhere with an "RIP" reg, or am I imagining that ??

If memory serves me right, DIE 222 was a saloon and first registered by Lana Knit in Shannon, Co. Clare.

Ehhh well it still could be the original reg, and on the correct car, just later converted into a hearse.

It would be beautiful if it was restored to original condition and a great reg too, but the wing mirrors have to go, they destroy the lines of the car. It's so rare to see a classic hearse in running order so I suppose it's acceptable at some level, there's still hope for it being restored by someone, I know if I came across it I'd restore it.

Theres a new book on British hearses out now, written by Dean Reader(I think thats his name) from the hearse club, must get my hands on it.
Morbid or not,i like that kind of thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 688 ✭✭✭bugsntinas

nice car indeed.people take reg plates too serious.many years ago myself and brother were at brands hatch and saw a merc with PEN 15.a few weeks later it was in the paper 'cause some old biddy complained it was rude and the owner got find!

Theres one for junkyard on page 78 in this months irish vintage,a 1935 Austin 16/6 Hearse up in donegal. They say, ideal for conversion to van or woody,it would be a sin to do that after it lasting this long as a hearse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,475 ✭✭✭2cv

Love Irish Vintage... Just a shame that all the cars in the ads are overpriced by at least 500%...

I'm pretty sick of guys going over to the UK, buying a £1,000 car, and sell it for €10,000... Me thinks they get their exchange rates all mixed up

I saw DIE 222 today, parked at a house at Ringaskiddy, Cork, opposite where all the new cars are stored.

Yes my memory was quite correct, as it was my late Father that purchased the Maroon Zodiac in Shannon. It was then sold on to somebody in Abbeyfeale and converted into a hearse, and used as such until some years back, and yes the number is 100% correct, as was another Clare registered car, a Morris Oxford which had DIE 1 plates, and it was the Oxford that came from Lana Knit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Wonder who in abeyfeale converted hearses? Thanks for that info.

There was a good comedy series on TG4 called "C.U. Burn" about a fella who had a turf fired crematorium in Donegal somewhere. The number of his hearse was "RIP 13":D

I saw that ,'a made up reg' as RIP was never issued by Kilkenny CoCo for superstitious reasons

Is it true that the reg EIE 10 belonged to a farmer in Clare called McDonald?:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,475 ✭✭✭2cv

    EIE 10 :D:D

I've seen a police car in Belgium with the letter LUI in the reg.. LUI means lazy in dutch... i thought that was very appropriate
    :D:D

no, your not. The Ford Zodiac hearse used in the TG4 programme about an undertaker had the reg RIP 13.:)

Just looking at the Zodiac, those wing mirrors need to be replaced by chrome ones and Im sure there should be
a chrome roof railing for all those ''period'' plastic or glass seethrough flowers. I dont think I ever saw a rear
window rubber surround painted the same colour as the car.....

i always thought the leitrim reg tit 5 would have been amusing if it came out and wondered what sort of a car would get it then they changed the reg system in 1987

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭sogood

Just cos I love them so much, theres a very nice BMW 735 for sale on Donedeal, (for small money) with the reg 97 D 735.

Had some friends over from the States for a week and they werer amused and intrigued by all the sheep wandering about down here in the South West, so much so that it became a bit of a running gag. Anyway, they returned home last week and after leaving the airport they were driving towards Texas and saw this plate, so they HAD to take a pic and send it to me. Just an odd little story and an unusual plate, by our standards at least. Also saw a plate on a Mk 2 Cortina, if I remember correctly, on a documentary years ago all about the Cortina and it was CLA 55 Y.
