I thought ntl/chorus was VOIP? Doesnt use the eircom phone lines?

AH BLAST!!! I forgot they changed their thingymabob:o

"Our phone service is an innovative service which uses the same cable that provides our TV and Broadband services to your home instead of the traditional telephone lines used by other phone operators." (Direct from UPC website)

UPC/NTL/Chorus have never been compatible with sky dial back, not sure what you think has changed?

I had chorus phone service about 3 years ago(i think) and had multiroom with sky. Never had a problen with call back.

Was it landline or cable? NTL uses voip which certainly was not compatible 3 yrs ago only a very few voip providers have cracked this problem.

    It was landline Tony.

    Obviously that explains it then

ok now im confused so are ye saying the phone line wont work with sky multiroom. the girl on the phone from ntl/chorus said their phone line uses fibre optic cables.
i thought they just needed a phone line so they know you havent given one of the boxes to someone else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

Its VOIP so has not worked to date but only NTL can answer definitively whether the issue has been fixed. Magnet are in the same position AFAIK

what exactly is the problem with VOIP and sky boxes calling back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

Probelm is it does not work correctly in the same way as a fax does not always work with voip

Just curious - but why on earth would you want to keep NTL/Chorus (lousy service, no HD etc. etc.) if you have Sky?

I don't know if it's connected, but I have difficulty getting through to a friend on his NTL phone when his NTL Broadband is busy. It seems to clog up in the evenings - Broadband speed slow and phone busy. My understanding is that the whole neighbourhood shares one NTL cable vs separate cable each for normal landlines.

@ bugfree bob - i dont have any services at the moment. just after moving into a house and i want to get sky+ and multiroom but sky want a phone line for it. so was going to get the phone service from chorus coz its quick and cheap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

you might as well get the whole lot from ntl/chorus. TV, multiroom, phone and broadband. Some good deals about as far as i know now?

It's better value to just get Broadband/Phone from UPC (ntl/Chorus) and Satellite (free and/or Sky) for TV.

I just got Sky+HD in today, upgraded from sky. I have UPC phone using their voip. I use upc for phone and broadband (20Mbit!), and there was no problem with the callback anymore during installation. I was worried too. In fact, their callback system was down for a while today which caused a bit of a delay. Just make sure to use the telephone port 1 on the UPC cable voip/bb box.

now all I need is a good, proven, hdmi splitter so i can use my tv and projector from the single HDMI output on the sky+hd box.

    hope this helps other people.

Afaik its got to do with the frequencies available, your standard phone line has a wider range while voip has a restriced range just for voice. Phones work but fax's dial up internet and things like sky would struggle to make a connection given the available bauds (think thats right word).

I have Sky+ multiroom and found it hard to get a definitive answer about compatibility with NTL's phone service. Sky were no help. NTL said they thought that maybe it could be used with Sky+ but not with HD.

Anyway, I took a gamble and got the NTL phone service and no problems at all with Sky.

Danny perhaps you are talking about the wireless local loop Chorus used to use a few years back for their telephone service....square antenna on roof like fixed wireless broadband? This only lasted a 2/3 years as they lost the license in the end. You COULD dial out on a Sky box with this system.

According to another post on boards the sky callback feature works on upc phonelines.

Check out the forum linked below, its about half way down, has pictures and all of it working....

    Hi all two quick questions:

~Do UPC allow you to only take out Broadband (and not digital tv aswell). I have sky and want to keep sky, as I seem to remember asking NTL (a couple of years ago) about only getting broadband and was told I needed to get TV also.

~If I got UPC and their Phone service how would I set it up that all the phone points are connected? Where would the router need to go? I have a pc connect by LAN so the upc router would need to be close by.

    Thanks in advance

First question, yes, you pay an additional €6 per month or so to get their phone and broadband without t.v.
As for the second question, it all depends on your setup. The router is usually left by your NTL point though.

I know that other UPC users have reported the sky callback working with UPC phonelines but the worrying side of me is convinced that mine wont work when sky come to install on thursday.

I have an old sky digibox with card in my attic. If I connect this up and do the new installation test to check the callback will it renew any old subscription on the old card?

Just tested the UPC phone connection by using dial-up to eircom net. It worked perfectly! I even browsed around a bit to see if it was as bad as we all remember...
It was alot faster than I remember dial-up being, but was still painfully slow by todays standards (Waiting for pictures to load was the strangest part!!)

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but I said I would post an update for anyone searching for an answer in the future.

Got my Sky + and Sky HD boxes installed last Thursday, both connected to UPC phone line. Installer first claimed he could not do the installation due to lack of eircom phone line but luckily I convinced him to try it at least.

He installed both boxes, did new installation, box attempted a callback and failed, we retried the callback a second time and it worked!

Same thing happened on both boxes...First attempt would fail and second attempt would work.

I can now access all interactive features including checking my SKY bill via the red button but when doing this the connection fails once then works upon retry. Not perfect but it works well enough for me.

Only question I have now is when sky sends the signal to the boxes to phone home will they retry immediately when the callback fails or just give up after a single try. I'm hoping they try a second callback immediately as this would be successful but if they don't I fear sky will contact me regarding the failed callbacks!!

Hi,is your Sky multi room still working with UPC phone line?I'm trying to connect mine but it keeps saying"phone line not connected" i ran a cable from the router to the Sky+ box.

FFS, I am having the same problem. Installer says it won't phone home on tel 1. He's tried a few times and it won't go. He says not that I can't have multiroom as it.

UPC says it should be fine. People on boards say it should be fine. Bouncing around sky call centres now.

I rang Sky today and went through all the menus,he took me to the installers menu and the box failed to make a call back, after i hung up I tried a few more times and was successful,my card was activated I did this with both boxes.I rang Sky back and asked what happens when the box dose not make a call back and was told it would keep trying till it did,so hopefully i will be OK.With regards to UPC when I phoned them to ask if the phone line would work with Sky nobody seem to know and was told someone would ring me back, still waiting....

Sky man has left. I am not a happy bunny. I've an old sky box at home that I am going to test with. Once I'm sure I can dial out (eventually) I'll rearrange install. Thanks

you wont need a phone line if you only have one box.

I have just managed to get sky to do the callbacks. I have no phoneline coming into the house. We have got fixed wireless broadband at 2m/bit. There is a MicroTik RouterBoard mounted to the roof of the house. Its connected to a linksys SPA 2102 for Voip service.

After spending a whole day reading forums and configuring the linksys ATA, it is able to make the callbacks most of the time.

Out of 8 attempts this morning, 5 callbacks returned "Installation Complete" and 3 attempts returned "Callback Failed".

    My linksys SPA settings:

    Call Waiting : Disabled
    Caller ID Generation : Enabled
    Echo Cancelation : Disabled
    Block Caller ID : Disabled
    Preferred Codec : G.711a
    Force Preferred Codec : Enabled
Enable T.38 FAX Codec : Disabled

Sky are calling on thursday to install my multiroom so im hoping all is still working at that stage and the activation will work after 1 or 2 attempts.

Would you mind mentioning which VOIP provider your are using? I tried a few and was unable to callback.

Erm, im not sure. The name of the broadband company is Rapid Broadband. They serve the West Cork area. It was them who setup the voip not me! Possibly it will say the providers name on the setup page of the voip box, i will check for you!

Anyway sky came and installed everything successfully. After making the activation callbacks the installer said to me i could plug out the phone lines again because he said they very rarely force the callbacks outside of Dublin and that I would be very unlucky to receive any letters about it from Sky - so i plugged them out and put my settings back to normal! :)

Edit :: All i can see in the config page is HOST: SipuraSPA. Is that the name of a provider? I dont know! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 indidubliner

    Thanks IMC042,

I tried around 4-5 different voip providers and none of them even initiate the modem handshake for callback so was curious which provider was successful for you.

SipuraSPA is the SIP adapter name not the provider name. It's probably the same provider as your broadband then.

Hi, Sorry for dragging up an old thread, I seem to be having the same problem.

I have a Sky HD box in one room, and a Sky + box in another. I have the UPC phone service (it's a Cisco modem). I can't seem to get a call back on either boxes when connected into either tele 1 or tele 2 on the cisco.

The tests fails and displays "modem not connected please contact support".

I would like to know if anyone has found a way around this? Is it sky who's at fault or UPC?
    I live in Dublin 5.

Does anyone else have this issue.

    Thanks in advance.
