Slight stiffness in lower back after performing Squats

Hey all, I performed some squats last night and this morning my lower back on the right side feels a little bit stiff. This also happened a couple of weeks ago and I had to stay away from squats & deadlifts for a week. I am relatively new to squats and DL, so there is a possibility that i'm not doing them properly?? I don't think i'm lifting too heavy and am always very careful on my form. Does anyone else ever get back pain/stifness from squats in particular??

Not from squats really, but I only started deadlifting again recently and I'm really feeling it in my lower back.

If your form is good, and it's just stiffness as a pose to pain I'd say it's probably ok. Once your lower back strengthens up and gets used to supporting the load the stiffness should go away imo.

Stiffness should be expected, specially if you're new. I still get stiffness when I go up a notch. You're using all those muscles for support remember but make sure your back is not rounded and that the power is coming from your legs.

You should experience more stiffness however from the DLing but either way, keep the weight light and make sure your form is solid (get someone to check) and don't rush up the weights too fast.

Should you always experience the stiffness after deadlifts?

Would doing some sit ups/general stretch of the back prevent the stiffness

OP, I found that doing 3 sets of 5 unweight back extensions at the end of my workout puts my back in decent running order for the next day. If I leave them out I can really feel the stiffness in it. I've no idea why it works but those three sets of back extensions give me a usable set of spinal erectors even after a very heavy session!

Switch to leg press, gives all benefits of squats without the danger of immediate or long term injury. also most people can lift much higher weights on leg press than squat which gives bigger intensity.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I will speak to one of the instructors later about the stiffness...I think it's more from the squats than DLs but i'll get some tuition and see how it goes. Squats and DLs are my two weaknesses, my fitness is really starting to come good and i've lost a considerable amount of BF over the last 7 weeks from just cardio and Benching/DB free weights etc. so squats and DLs i reckon could take me to the next level over the next couple of months....bring it on I say!!
