Has anyone had trouble with their Sciatic Nerve, giving them a feeling that they have torn their hamstring and or Glute Muscle??

yes I suffered with it for three months of last year.I think it was brought on by a tackle I sustained in rugby.I was too ignorant or stubborn to go see the doc thinking that it would fade.I eventually had to take heavy painkillers for it.If I remember correctly it ran from my lower back all the way down to my calf muscle on my right leg.Its caused by an inflammation of the nerve body for some reason.I would recommend you go see the docs straight away and not to what I did and prolong the agony.

Provided it isn't coming from one of the lumbar discs (A thorough Neurological exam should be able to rule that in or out)

The symptoms you listed are quite commonly linked to a condition called Piriformis syndrome. The Sciatica nerve will passed in and around the muscle and in a "lucky" 20% it will pierce through middle of the muscle.

Glut stretches and nerve flossing(think there are few videos on you tube demonstrating the technique) will bring some relief, but if it doesn't resolve, definitely seek treatment for the problem.

I've had something similar before - a nerve trapped between vertebrae or some such.
Anti - inflamatories worked a treat - difene or similar. If these don't work after a few days, you really need to go to the doc.

No offence buddy, but thats not good advice. All you're doing is masking the pain by pumping strong anti-inflammatroy's into your body, if you do this before you get assessed it can interfere with diagnosing the issue through manual assessment. You should go to a specialist before you go down this route as it'll only get worse in the long run and you become more dependant on pain killers.

Duffman, is this the same trouble you were asking about the other day? Did the chiropractor diagnose this condition and what was his recommendation?

Edit: I just read this again and I stand by what I said above. I see where you're coming from money shot. It seems like you had a minor impingement of the sciatic nerve that releases itself with NSAID's but it's still not the way to go with problems like this. If it's a vertebrae problem which can cause Sciatica issues such as a spinal stenosis, disc herniation, Osteophyte formation etc wont be cured in the long run by this approach.

i thought i had torn my hamstring on saturday during a game.
in my head i kinda new it wasn't torn and that it was a nerve as it kept twitching and i had no real pain when stretching it, but i couldnt run on it without getting the sensation of a torn hamstring
Yea i had to go to the club physio and she said i had full strenght in my hamstring so it was my sciatic nerve coming from my glute.
Said i should be ok for saturday to play. Plenty of stretchin and ice.
    Chiropractor said the same.
I went to one last night and he said i had tight glutes and hip flexor muscles which was giving me my back pain, Going to do this ART thing to sort it out, but assures me he treated this before and should see huge improvements after couple of treatments.

and to be honest i see some relief today after a small treatment he gave me last night after the consultation. in both my glutes and my back, which is i suppose encouraging

toggle what do you mean by piercing the muscle by the way???

its not a chronic problem, it only happened on saturday last.
the physio said it may have been caused by scar tissure knot from a previous strain which she located and elbowed out.
Does people think i should be ok to train this thursday and play on saturday as normal, as the physio said??

Should i get a tennis ball and do some self massage work on my glutes??

You can only really answer that question, it depends on how you feel. Listen to your physio before you listen to people on the internet!!

Tennis ball is good, golf ball is better, it gets deeper into the muscles

Point taken and accepted :o. I went to the doc first, and he said if something similar happened again, rest it and take the anti inflamatories for two days and if that hadn't cleared it up, then go back to him. In hindsight, it would be a better idea to get a diagnosis first before potentially masking a problem with drugs.
