Just a quick question why do some people do this, is it for extra carbs or something and is it worth doing or is it better to just stick with the protein drinks to gain muscle ?

You need carbs when doing workouts and pre-workout.
    Protein alone doesnt cut it.
You will probably get a much more detailed post from someone who knows the exact science.

I blend up bananas in mine.

anyone tried ON's Oats & Whey?
    http://www.optimumnutrition.com/products/100-oats-whey-p-265.html

does it mix / taste ok (i.e. like their regular whey)...

might be chaeper to put your own oats in normal protein
oats are dirt cheap in supermarkets
i blend a cup of oats into every protein shake i make
its way easier than eating bowls of oats

Very little oats in them, check the ingredients.

    Far cheaper.

They are pretty pricey compared to supermarkets, you can stick regular oats in a blender to make flour.

I mix whey with strawberry flavouring, oats & milk in the mornings, very nice creamy oats.

I make the following smoothies for breakfast most mornings:

    scoop whey,
    scoop oats (from Aldi)
    frozen banana,
    200 mls milk
    50g frozen blueberries

Will porridge oats do? Or am i being stupid in asking such an obvious question?

Ya, same thing as far as I know.
I throw a scoop of whey into my porridge in the mornings. Gonna just start drinking a shake though, cause it dosn't mix 100% with the porridge.

Recently I've kinda stopped taking a protein shake before/after the gym, I just try to get in some protein with each meal i.e. eggs, meat.

I'll second that - I friggin' HATE porridge but throwing oats into a protein shake? Yum!!

You'd need a blender for that kinda of craic though right?
I'd imagine it'd be a bit dodgy otherwise.

Dodgy? Well unless oaty shakes now do kneecappings, I can't see how you'd class them as dodgy?

But they mix fine - the milk in the shake softens the oats and it just makes the shake more textured. Mildly nutty flavour too, its quite nice, and very filling.

Was just joking. I don't drink milk, make my shakes with water. Might try it instead of the porrigde tomorrow morning.

a blender produces best results,it blends the oats into dust and this is better (for skinny people) because they digest faster so you will be hungry again sooner

    blenders are cheap in argos

For some reason oats in water just seems... ucky seem like the only suitable word :P Ah well, i'll put it in my shakes tomorrow and see how it goes!

Ok i'll have to get me some oats then, thanks for all the replies and helpful hints.

Oh and i'm probably gonna be the only one here that prefers porridge made with water, can't drink milk cos it blocks up my sinuses so i'll be mixing my protein and oats with water too, yummy :)

I have the same problem. After a sinus drainage when i was you ng and a CT scan recently it was found i had nothing wrong with my nose, however its still really blocked all the time. I was advised by a specialist to get a nasal spray called Sterimar, which you can get over the counter. Basically its an isotonic solution of seawater, i.e. contains same concentration of salt as the human body cells. It clears your nose almost instantly.

Yeah i went to the doctor myself about mine and he said i've rhinitis and sports induced asthma, was having trouble breathing while exercising, so he gave me a nasal spray and an inhaler, they kinda worked but i decided to cut out milk and see what happens and i'm grand, haven't used the spray or the inhaler since and don't need to, milk is evil :(

all dairy foods will cause mucus to some degree

in some individuals its serious enouogh to impede breathing and others dont even notice it

even whey protein can do this especially in high quantities

I think soya can effect testosterone & oestrogen levels, I think it is OK for women but might not be ideal for men. Somebody might have a better alternative to recommend.

I was looking for an alternative to whey for a few reasons ( mucus, bloating, flatulence etc ) and found this stuff :

    http://www.sunwarrior.co.uk/sunwarriorprotein.htm

I find it very easy to digest and easy on the system.

Old wives tale. It can cause mucus to thicken, but won't lead to an increase in its production.

Tried a shake last night with half a cup of oats, water and a scoop of protein. Shook it up well. It wasn't great.

Best done in a blender, especially when doing it in water.

I'm one of them that had to stop using milk and as i've already said my "sports induced" asthma has disappeared too, bit of a coincidence ?

u wont get decent results with a shaker , buy a blender in argos for 30euro

    i personally use
    1 mug of oats
2 scoops of on gold std protein
    and 1.5 mugs of milk

1 scoop of protein doesnt hit the spot for me
