What do you guys think about this for weight loss and health?

Everyone's gonna have different views on it. I found it.......*drum roll*........expensive.

For me personally, a bit of moderation goes a long way. Pure paleo would rule out eating oats for example, and I like oats a lot and I think they're good for me, so I eat oats.

It definitely gets expensive if you do it right. I did it for a good while and although I don't follow it now I still keep my grain intake reasonably low. beyondveg.com is a good resource of information on paleo diets.

I don't think its that expensive. Plenty of chicken, eggs, nuts and greens, all nice and cheap.

I have been moving closer to it the last few weeks. Once you keep dairy in, which is cheating according to some but not according to others, its grand. The only difference it makes to me is no grains at all, which is starting to get difficult.

And plenty of red meat, preferably grass fed. I found it does get expensive.

I wonder is there anyway you can buy meat direct from the farmer or supplier? cut down the middle man or shop mark up (which is very large in most cases)

    Is it just no carbs?

Not really. It can be summed by the sentence "If it runs, flies, swims or crawls, or you can eat it raw, then eat it". It essentially excludes all grains and any food that requires processing in order to be eaten.

fillet steaks are deliciously tender but cheaper steaks are still very tasty

I tried it there for a 3/4 week period before Christmas and it had some great results.

In the mornings (weekday) I would have a chicken breast, boiled egg or a piece of meat left over from the night before on the way to work. Weekends would be eggs. During the day I would snack on 5 pieces of fruit. My lunch consisted of a large, curry like, soup which was pure vegetables & stock cube. In the evenings I would have meat and veg.Whatever I could get my hands on.

The soup was the tricky part i.e. making it. I'd spend time on a Sunday morning making it and have it for the week.

I would stray the odd time, would also put sweet potatoe in soup and have a beer or three at the weekend. I went from roughly 14.5 to 13.75 stone in a 4 week period and felt no side affects.

Saying that, I think my optimum weight ranges between 13.5 to 14 depending on my fitness and whether I put on muscle or not.

I found cutting out bread surprisingly easy. However, I stopped before Christmas and have found it difficult to get the motivation and organisation back, that's the hardest part.

I don't think there's any harm to be done by trying it.

I really want to get back on to it, did it for a month or two last year for health benefits rather than weight loss.

Issues are...giving up oats, (love porridge and flapjacks) but the more I read about the effects of them and gluten, the more I reckon it'd be worth it. Also trying to add a few lbs so I figure it'd be more difficult/expensive to do.

There was a great thread/discussion on paleo a few years ago here, i'll try and dig it out.

I'm on it just over a week now and I'm noticing an increase in energy levels already. Prior to this I used to eat a load of oats/bread/pasta every day so I thought it might be difficult to give them up but it really isn't. The only trouble I'm having at the moment is preparation of meals but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I've been eating Paleo since Janurary to drop fat after doing a dirty bulk before Christmas. I was 82.5kg I'm now 77kg 10 weeks later. It's great for body composition. Yeah it is more expensive but I feel tons better than when I was eating grains. I'm not super strict so I can lead an easier life when in certain social situations but I hit it about 90% of the time. I'm planning another dedicated strength cycle this Winter I plan to only supplement with a few litres of milk this time. Grains begone.

Oats?!! Why can't we eat oats?
Since giving up bread, I've been living on oats...porridge, oatcakes, flapjacks, raw with berries and yoghurt.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 208 ✭✭AttackThePoster

Cool. Thing is, I loved porridge in the morning, every morning but now since eating this I can see that it wasn't making me feel that good and pretty much set me up the wrong way for the rest of the day.

I'm 99%...butter and bacon still included.

I'm keeping a diet log at the moment as were doing a nutrution challenge thing at CFI. Here's a typical day.

Breakfast: 6 eggs, butter, blackberries, blueberries, VitD 5,000UI, fish oil

    Snack: Apple

    Lunch:
Bought Caesar Salad - "Mixed leaves, chicken, bacon, parmesan cheese, croutons & caesar dressing"
    + 150g beef
    + 15 brazilnuts
    - croutons

Snack: 150g Beef, Apple, 15 brazilnuts

    PWO: 330ml Chocolate Milk

Dinner: 300g steak, lots of olive oil, mushrooms, brocolli, fish oil

Only real significant Paleo excursion is the chocolate milk after workout.

That's quite a bit. Where did you get the 5000 value from if you don't mind me asking?

Hey ixus, do you mind giving me the recipe for that? Sounds like what I'm looking for, cheers.

    The soup:

    1 full butternut sqwuash
mushrooms (as many as you want)
    cellery
    carrots (however many you want)
    peppers (red,green,yellow)
red and green chilli pepper (1 of each)
sweet potato (breaks the paleo rule)
(sometimes I throw in spinach - it changes the colour and taste a bit)
    2 vegetable stock.
1 or 2 cloves of garlic.

    chop all of the above.

put a drizzle of olive oil in frying pan, put in clove of garlic, fry the veg for a min or two then into pot.
Add veg stock to jug of boiling water and mix, then add to pot.

Amount of veg and water all depends on how long you want to have the soup for.

Bring to the boil, I add pepper and maybe chilli flakes for extra spice, and simmer.

Check and stir occasionally. Prod with fork, when everything soft, leave to cool. Then take a blender to it. Sorted.

You can also add chicken/meat to it handly if it's thick enough.

    Hey token, few quick questions:

What fish oil do you use?
Where do you buy your blueberries/blackberries (if I was to buy both in Tesco that'd be 6 euro alone)?
Which Vitamin D supplement do you take - is it necessary to take this while going Paleo?
Where do you buy your beef?

    Thanks :D

    Fish Oil -> http://www.iherb.com/Carlson-Labs-The-Very-Finest-Fish-Oil-Lemon-Flavor-16-8-fl-oz-500-ml/2796?at=0

    VitD -> http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Vitamin-D-3-1000-IU-180-Softgels/543?at=0

I personally can't tell a difference when I take VitD and when I don't but it's dirt cheap so I take it anyway after reading a few VitD articles.

On the blueberries/blackberries. Ya I just buy them in a supermarket at the moment so quite expensive. I should start looking for somewhere else to get them.

I buy roast beef in Supervalu. They often have 1kg there for 8 euro.

Slightly off topic, but I would suggest trying your local butcher. The cost is similar but the quality is not.

A good relationship with a proper butcher is one of life's understated joys.

That reminds me guys, good butchers in the city centre? Donnybrook Fair have a good deal on at the moment (15 chicken fillets for 12 euro) but it's only temporary. Where can I get some good beef and some damn good bacon (not very salty please)? :D

    Thanks token by the way.

Like Token, I have cleaned up the diet and although im not strict paleo, I have made a lot of changes and am heading that direction. It's day 11 now of the CFI Nutrition challenge. Cut out sugar and refined carbs completely. My energy levels have not been great yet, but hopefully the transition won't last too long. Here is what i had today

    06:00
Protein mix with 300ml milk, handful of blueberries

    09:00
2 fried eggs, 1-2 scrambled eggs, 2 bacon, 1 tomato
    2 chlorella tabs
    1 expresso w/milk

    13:30
Leftover Paleo(ish) lasagne - Like this stuff!

    17:00
1 apple, 1 pear 2 tspns peanut butter

    19:00
    Pint of milk

    21:45
2 large mackerel fillets pan fried in butter
1 pear, small handful of blueberries
4 small carrot & 4 celery sticks with red pepper hummus (m&s)
    Fish oil

In my local butcher you can get an extremely beautiful sirloin steak from about €3.50. We got two the other day for just over €7, and they were amazing. Minute amount of fat on it, I found it to be very lean.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 208 ✭✭AttackThePoster

I'd try and eat a good bit of lean meat but still go for the fatty pieces from time to time. Cheaper and still good for you. That's if you're strapped for cash etc.

Two weeks in to this paleo way of eating and it's very good so far. Energy levels are up, protein intake is up, veg intake is up, good fats intake is up, no more coffee, no more pasta/rice/bread. All good :D

Just stumbled across this thread on my quest to find out more about the paleo diet. Have ordered a couple of books on it so they should be with me soon enough but in the mean time it'd be nice to grab a few recipes from here if people are following this way of eating?

Also, in terms of post workout meals, what do you suggest? I used to take a shake but am open to eating meat instead (presuming something like beef jerky is not a bad option?). As for the meal...I'm still trying to figure that part out. Typically I would have ate some chicken and rice but obviously I'm going to cut the rice out now.

    Appreciate any replies, thanks.

Brocolli, Cauliflower and asparagus will be your friends while on a paleo diet. Recipe wise you would do well to look at http://www.marksdailyapple.com/
With regards to books I'm currently reading 'The Paleo Solution' by Robb Wolf (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0982565844/ref=oss_product), not far into it so can't really say whether it's worth picking up or not. I did pick up a paleo cook book (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0982207727/ref=oss_product) that has some really nice recipes in it.
