    • Park front in first.
    • Park rear in first.

I almost always drive front in but some people seem obsessive about reversing in even when lot of empty spaces...

    Normal parking = front

Parallel parking (why do so many struggle with this?) is always reverse in.

    Normal parking - Reverse in.

Parallel Parking - Reverse in again.

Reverse in even if the carpark is 90% empty. Prevents having to reverse out if the carpark is full when you return. Obviously not done for echelon parking - although it is hilarious to see people try to reverse in in these cases!

It's safer to reverse into a parking spot as you have much better visibility driving forward out of a space rather then reversing out.

I reverse into spaces all the time.

I always reverse in so im parked straight unlike most people who drive in are normally parked like this| / | ( At a angle incase people dont understand my diagram:D)

Reverse all the time, only exception being when doing a big shopping and need access to the boot ;)

reverse in, drive out. It is advised, if not required, that you do not reverse into a superior category of road. This would include reversing from your driveway, for example.

90% reverse in. I find it easier and safer when leaving.

    Add a poll?

Reverse in, i always find it easier to reverse in and drive out nose first, rather than the other way round.

    Reverse in everytime.

    Reverse in for parallel parking.
    Drive in for normal parking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,875 ✭✭✭Buffman

Reverse in, unless I know boot access will be required for a trolley full of shopping.

It's handy when you find two empty spaces back to back, you can park and exit with no reversing at all.:)

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

It depends on the car park sometimes. Usually I have to take stuff out of the boot (laptop, bag, etc) so sometimes driving in is the better option in order to avoid walking on muck, being to close to a wall, fence, car for access to the boot. In a supermarket car park I'll usually drive in to the parking space so I don't have to wheel the trolley between parked cars - some of those trolleys have a mind of their own.

If I've no need for access to the boot then I'll reverse in as driving out is simple and somewhat safer than reversing out.

Always reverse in, I've learned that from work and i've never drove in. In a rush there last week i drove into a space for the first time in a long time, and i went so far that the front lip on the bumper got caught on the other half of a curb. Nearly tore the bumper off reversing out.

I avoid parallel parking at all costs, if i scratched my wheels I'd never forgive myself:P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,158 ✭✭✭✭Berty

    Lets get this straight(pun intended).

Those who park bonnett in first will generally be at an angle. Women do not reverse in, in most cases. Its because of the low peripheral vision and inability(the brain) to clarify the dimensions of the vehicle.

I always reverse in except when I go shopping to a supermarket. If you reverse in you cannot get the trolley to the boot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 459 ✭✭PattheMetaller

    Reverse in on all occasions.

Bit of a bummer when you arrive back with a trolley of messages only to find that the driver in the next bay drove in at an angle do you have to cart the contents of the trolley to the boot by hand.

reverse in all occasions except in front of my house and work.. (no traffic)

everywhere else tho, it makes sense to reverse.. and parallel parking going forward jus dont work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭T-Maxx

Drive in, except parallel parking of course where you have to reverse in.

The Irish do seem to have an obsessity with reverse parking.

I would have said I see it less here than anywhere else...

Obviously always reverse into parallel parking unless large gap. I think car parks get a lot of their business from people scared of parallel parking :p

It wouldn't be a bad addition to the driving test as does show ability to control the car?

Maybe I always drive front in because I am late.

I notice some people have trouble reversing in shopping centre car parks as harder to know if inside their lines.

Will someone who drives into a parking spot instead of reversing explain to me the logic?

ya may aswell do the reversing when you can see all round ya like..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 619 ✭✭✭WHITE_P

Always reverse in. It's safer and easier when pulling out.

Take a look in any ESB yard and you will see signs up advising drivers to reverse in for safey reasons.

I have been laughing for at least 40 seconds at this, thanks.:D

As for parking, it doesn't keep me awake at night. I just park, within the lines and allowing room to open the boot.

front in first, then drive back out and reverse in so it looks nice on the pic

You're welcome. It's not often that I make people laugh.

Now, if you care to explain maybe I could keep a good thing going...

Did you know that a Garda can give you 5 penalty points for parking dangerously but only 4 points for driving at 180kph or more.

    Madness!

    generally reverse in....
But I do it cause I remember reading somewhere its better for fuel efficieny and the engine....

    here's a bit of a link.... http://paultan.org/archives/2008/07/26/reverse-parking-into-a-parking-bay-is-better/

Far from madness, hard to park dangerously in a car park, however I've seen cars parked so badly at the side of road, that they present a serious risk to other road users, not to mention what it says about the ability of the driver.

Always reverse in as its much safer and faster to get out when I need to leave, also I find it easier to reverse the drive in straight...weirdly enough

well anythin has a better turn with "back wheels" steering.. thus reversing a car.

wonder what the new laguna is like for this with 4 wheel steering?

Although it looks like nearly everyone reverses into spaces on here, we are generally people who like driving and I would suspect have slightly more awareness/skill than your average motorist. In reality, very few people do reverse into spaces, i notice this everyday outside work and in carparks across the country, there are far more cars driven straight into a space than reversed into.

This is also highlighted by the fact that when to you go reverse parallel park on the side of a road, the driver behind will be right up your arse just as you drive past the space, even though you are indicating.

I always reverse into spaces too, unless there's a space dead ahead and I just drive straight in. Makes it inifinitely easier when your car has the turning circle of an oil tanker.

I reverse in whenever possible. I always reverse into my driveway so got used to it pretty quickly.

That's one thing i don't think i've ever done, reversed into the driveway.

99% of the time I reverse into spaces, unless I know that I'll need to get something bulky into the back. It's made much easier by the fitting of parking sensors (which I still haven't fitted to my current car; have a camera going into the Hilux this week!).

I reverse because that was how I learnt to park (reversing my mothers car around a water tank and into a narrow fitting garage, where you couldn't open the door if you drove straight in).

I actually find it difficult to drive straight into many spaces in one movement now (possibly because of the small spaces where I park).

As for the car behind being stuck to my behind and not latting me reverse; it I think that that's going to happen, I'll indicate, then stop beside the space, and when the car behind me is stopped I'll move forward and reverse into the space. If he blocks me, I'll sit with my reverse lights on until he moves back.

It's amazing how many people will indicate last second that they're going to reverse into a space, then they'll sit there, despite you giving them ample room, and then drive off without parking!

I mostly drive in. If there's a free space opposite then I'll drive on through to that.

These idiots get on my goat, as well as the ones that drive through to an opposite space. They invariably end up going the wrong way down the one-way system when they leave.
Will someone who drives into a parking spot instead of reversing explain to me the logic?
    Pure laziness in my case.

Interestingly, I've found that when reversing out of a space in a car park, people are more likely to stop as they know you won't have seen them.
When driving out it's the opposite and they're more likely to drive on as they know you're aware of them.

That's one thing i don't think i've ever done, reversed into the driveway.

Probably the one place you should do it. Reversing out of the driveway in the morning with a cold engine puts more wear on the engine and/or transmission than driving straight out.
I always reverse into the driveway when the engine is still warm.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

You are going to get that engine wear regardless.

Reverse in unless I have to get buggy/bags in and out of the boot and I'm parking up against a wall or bush. Actually find it easier to park in reverse.

Always arse-first. My boyfriend beat that into me when I was learning to drive!

In most cases you really should reverse park unless - sash parking, idiots who reverse into sash parking spots should be banned

    Resisting... urge... to... comment... :D

Parallel parking... unless there is OCEANS of spaces then reverse 90% of the time... if 2 or more spaces in a row just drive in as its quicker and easy... single space = 100% Reverse

Car parking spaces... depends on location - but 50/50 drive/reverse... again if awkward position = 100% reverse...

Its easy to reverse in and makes like easier to get out - so unless in a hell of a rush - reverse wins...
