Which do you watch the Six Nations Championship on: RTE, BBC or a mixture of both??

Myself, I watch BBC commentary and RTE analysis, because I hate Ryle Nugent and love Brian Moore.

So many good Brian Moore Moments:

    1. "The Gay Slap"
    2. Italy v England 2008: "He's (Toby Flood) kicking it away again, GOD'S SAKE!!"
    3. Calling Haskell a "HALF-WIT" after getting sinbinned against Italy in 2009.

Rte's analysis far exceeds the bland nonsense on the BBC. Ryle Nugget is annoying on commentary but I can live with it. I don't like either Jonathan Davies or Brian Moore so I'll plump for RTE everytime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

RTE for the punditry, mainly because they cover more on Ireland, even while showing another game.

Commentary from BBC, Moore is very good and gives some insight into forward play, along with in game analysis of play like they do on Sky.

RTE has George Hamilton who is clueless, Ryle who's annoying and Tony Ward who's repetitive.

Oh Net 2 always. That Nugent lad's a knob. The banter between Hook, Pope, McGurk and O Shea is top class, especially when the other lads gang up on Hook when he backtracks on something he said..

Mostly RTE but I've been watching the games played in the UK on BBC because they're showing them in HD.

    It's been a while since it's been called Net 2. :)

The RTE guys are good. It would be great if the Apres Match boys were on it as well. Not a big fan of it but it is good.

Tough call. I'll usually watch BBC but when Davies starts talking nonsense I'll get the urge to flick back to RTE. Then again, I can't stand Ryle Nugents voice. He sounds like Harvey Fierstein.

RTE for the punditry and BBC for commentary except for the Ireland v England matches. Ryle nugent is just too annoying. HIs voice and and just everything he says really. I don't mind Tony ward so much though. I think Brian Moore is such a muppet also. It funny when he gets all annoyed and frustrated at england when they are playing badly.

Always watched it on the BBC (not that I have much of a choice anymore).

Their pre-game coverage is generally complete nonsense though so I dont tend to tune in til around kick off time.

Snap. And i'm actually not quite sure why, but I mentally now associate Ryle Nugents voice with international rugby. So I feel kinda not quite right when its not saying stupid things over the game. Weird huh?

    BBC for the lot.

For punditry, I will not watch a panel that is constantly overshadowed by a self-contradicting attention-seeker (Hook) demanding the limelight non-stop so not a chance for RTE in my household. They really are THAT bad.

For commentary, RTE haven't had a decent commentator since John Robbie moonlit for them during the 1995 RWC.

Mclaren yes of course he is the voice of rugby and for ever will be. But nasal problems Fred?? I know things are bad these days with RTE and BBC competing to see who can have the worst commentators but it aint that bad!

I watch RTE but mostly for the punditry. Just like with soccer matches, RTE have a really entertaining panel. The guys are knowledgeable enough and Hookie just adds to the entertainment factor!

i watch rte mostly. Watched BBC today more so as they had wood and dallaglio both of whom i have a lot of time for.

The things that annoy me about RTE are:

-McGuirk is the worst anchor on the planet, asks stupid questions.
-Tony ward, he doesnt know s**t.
    - Brent Pope, he doesnt know s**t.

Ryle i don't mind, he is harmless. Hook is entertaining as long as you don't take him too seriously.

I watched the BBC interactive forum last night and thought it was good. Austin Healy talks a lot of sense.

Usually go for BBC commentary, especially if Eddie Butler is commentating. Usually favour RTE for the pre-match, halftime and post-match punditry, although George has become a caricature of himself over the years as his "celebrity" has increased. Also sometimes switch back to RTE when Brian Moore is the BBC analyst, he has a tendency to get on my nerves, especially his one-eyed views during Ingerland games.

Analyst or commentator? Cause he is never the analyst.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I have absolutely no idea where the notion that Moore is one-eyed comes from. He is exceptionally critical of England a lot of the time  He generally applauds good play and criticises stupid play. The RTÉ commentators are several orders of magnitude more biased then he is.

This year I've been watching RTE almost exclusively. Quite a lot of the time I'll have the pre- and post- match guff running via the RTE web stream on my smaller computer screen instead of on TV so that I can be doing other things while they're not showing anything interesting video.

He is sometimes critical of England alright, comically so last week during their Italy match for example. It's just that whenever he praises any of the other teams in the championship -- or their players -- he often does it in such a patronising way. And I seem to remember him moaning about refereeing decisions throughout the 2nd half of our last Lansdowne victory over England (2005). Agree he's nowhere near as bad as the RTE clowns for the most part though. Definitely not shy about giving an opinion, unlike Ryle and Tony.

In his defence when he moans about refereeing decisions he generally backs up his comments quite well and explains why he thinks it was wrong. I never considered any praise he gave to other teams to be patronising, but maybe its just a perception issue. He certainly concentrates more on England, but I don't have a problem with that. I like having commentators that are passionate about the game. However, I have severe problems with the likes of Andy Nichol who seems to spend half his time explaining why nothing is Scotland's fault.

I really enjoy Brian Moore's commentary.
He is passionate about the game and very knowledgeable too, he explains the intricacies of the game very well. He does have a slight bias towards England, but overall i find his commentary critiques bad play and he points out mistakes, by the referee, regardless of who they benefit.

...and then there is George Hamilton's commentary.

I always switch over after a game to hear the banter between Pope and Hook.

I dont understand how anyone COUDNT love Ryle Nugent!! I think he's great! He makes everything so much more exciting than it is! When he commentates, its as if he's reading a passage from a great novel! plenty of examples of it today, but i can only remember one: "And as the sun sets in Edinburgh, the lights become brighter in Irish eyes!"

    Favourite commentator without a doubt!

I am in the minority here. I watch BBC for analysis, and RTE for commentary. I don't like Brent Pope or George Hook, Conor O'Shea is alright. But I love the Welsh guy on the BBC, Jonathan something, and Keith Woods is pretty good too!

I went for BBC in the poll, but probably should have clicked "RTE for Analysis, BBC for commentary", I flick between the two for analysis really. Ryle Nugent is easily the most irritating commentator I've ever heard, however, so BBC wins hands down in that department.

Generally BBC. As mentioned Hooke is just becoming a sideshow on RTE although BBC's Gusott is too fond of the sound of his own voice and will talk over his co-analysts. Jonathan Davies is very good IMO.

I have to say I do like RTÉ's coverage of each game, the commentary never bothers me, I'd nearly have it turned down, just loud enough to hear the ref and the atmosphere. Have to say Hookey was brilliant on saturday on Twitter during the games. Anyone hear Guscotts comment that Ireland will choke next week ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

Only heard RTE's comment on it. Well, specifically Hook's:

    "Who's Jeremy Guscott?" :)

For me, always RTE purely for Hook. Its a love hate relationship. What was it he said couple of weeks ago about vomiting on his Jaffa Cakes? Hilarious!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭Captain-America

    BBC
RTE, for both. Not a huge fan of the commentators, but the Analysis is brilliant. Completely ridiculous. I swear if Hook won a million euro he'd find some problem with it. I love how Pope eggs him on just to annoy him too. Pope does great analysis and COnor O' Shea's not too bad either.

The way Tony Ward talks however, you wouldn't know if you were watching Soccer or Rugby. Hook and Pope would kill each other if he wasn't there to shut them up though.
