I think its very sad that to compete at the highest levels of bodybuilding and powerlifting it is a requirement to take steroids.

It has got to the stage now where it is accepted and people see it as something to defend. It has pretty worrying implications for younger guys (teens)....not to mention the chronically under-regulated "legal" supplement market. There is also the issue of women taking the stuff and absolutely decimating their bodies. Then there's the sickeningly hypocritical attitude within the sport with Arnie denouncing drug cheats one week then handing them trophies and admiring their physique the next

Maybe I am naive, idealistic or out of touch but to me sport is about what you one can achieve with what you have naturally and not jabbing needles into your nuts.

It makes me sick to think sports I love like football, boxing or athletics could ever go the way of bodybuilding where it is a necessity to take illegal substances in order to compete.

What part of my post was misinformed?

I know exactly what steroids are. I know they dont make you bigger and I certainly dont buy into the overblown scaremongering of made for tv movies.

    Please dont condescend to me.

I will go out on the edge and say. You are misinformed.

I would recommend you go read up on Steroids before you make statments on a public Forum.

If anythig it is known for a fact.

    A. Steroids do make you bigger and in some ways better then you could ever be without.

    B. They are as safe/unsafe as taking any drug. Be it Coke/E/Pain killers/Flu plus Anything!

The bit I highlighted. Do you really think people inject their balls? That sort of sensationalism doesn't do your argument justice.

    wtf

id see that statement there as an inslut to the top drug free lifters everywhere..i mean you dont even have to go outside this site to see evidence you can be drug free and the best..

look at hanley and gem..and others...my god man...ive watched a man bench 300kg drug free to make history and you tell me hes not able for the highest levels of the game..

hanleys going to squat 300kg drug free and your going to tell me he cant stick it with the best of them

with an attitude like " oh i need drugs to be the best" youve lost the battle before you even begun...

im not slateing people who use drugs here...they are incredible atheltes and have made amazing achievements..but its up to them how they got there...

    /rant over...

A: OK so I sit on my arse for 12 weeks and take steroids and I come out looking like Ronnie Coleman?

Its a common misconception among some people (at least people I know) that you inject steroids and that makes your muscle grow. Im just saying I realise it takes as much work or more for Ronnie Coleman to get to the size he is as it takes a natural BB to get to the size he is.

B: But I dont take painkillers or flu plus unless I need to and if they had the *potential* side effects of steroids I personally would not touch them.

But I suppose its much easier to write people off as ignorant or misinformend rather than engage in a meaningful debate.

No need for the rant drifter. I admire people like Hanley and Gem any any other natural BB/powerlifter because I know the dedication is immense and they are developing a natural system to its absolute fullest through nothing but hard work.

That was the point of my post.

I think you have completely mistook me...I am not insulting anybody (steroid or non-steroid users, its a personal choice)

Am I out of line in saying that a natural BB/lifter could never compete with the top guys who also take steroids? Have you seen natural BB contests V the top events?

How about not letting this thread decend into a sh*tstorm, like every other time steroids are mentioned on this forum?
OP just informed us the film was being shown, and immediately people get up on their high horses.
    It's a good show, and I definitely wouldn't call it pro-steroids.

your entire post was misinformed, not just part of it

nobody injects steroids to their NUTZ

of course ANABOLIC steroids make u bigger

Anabolic steroids were first isolated, identified and synthesized in the 1930s, and are now used therapeutically in medicine to stimulate bone growth and appetite, induce male puberty, and treat chronic wasting conditions, such as cancer and AIDS. The American College of Sports Medicine acknowledges that AAS, in the presence of adequate diet, can contribute to increases in body weight, often in the lean mass compartment and that the gains in muscular strength achieved through high-intensity exercise and proper diet can be additionally increased by the use of AAS in some individuals

So in the absence of any training how much bigger would steroids make me if I start taking them now and did not change my diet? How long before I get the physique of a body builder.

This is getting completely off the point though. All I was trying to say is that:
There are people who believe taking steroids is cheating because if you take steroids you dont have to work as hard. They somehow magically make you into a bodybuilder without the work. I was merely trying to point out I understand that is wrong and that is not the reason why I would be against steroids

I have highlighted that as that is the point I was trying to make. Apologies if I was unclear but there is no point in getting into big debates and posting scientific studies on that issue.

I have never taken steroids, I have not devoted four years of my life to writing a thesis on the subject but I know what they do and the potential side effects. Few here have an in-depth knowledge of economics but that should not stop people debating or having an opinion on the economy.

Also I would hate people to think I am somebody who just listens to the scaremongers and believe steroids make you into the wolf man and destroy your life. Bigger, Stronger, Faster gives a very level headed objective view of things and thats a view I subscribe too. There is too much scaremongering/misinformation about steroids but I still think it is wrong and sad their use is so prevalent and accepted.

So is anybody actually going to say how they feel about steroids in sports and whether they agree/disagree with it?

You wouldn't. But that's not what you said. You said:
I think its very sad that to compete at the highest levels of bodybuilding and powerlifting it is a requirement to take steroids.
    And then:
I know they dont make you bigger
Body builders do train, and do have strict diets.

You also said they inject into their "nuts", which is a mark of ignorance in any discussion on steroids.

Just to clarify, there was a huge thread on this a few months ago and I came down quite heavily on the side of "I don't agree with them". But TBH it didn't look like you wanted a debate, it looked more like a rant

"I think its very sad that to compete at the highest levels of bodybuilding and powerlifting it is a requirement to take steroids."

So your saying their are people who could compete with the likes of Jay Cutler and Ronnie Coleman without the use of steroids?
    davyjose wrote: »

OK, I think the misunderstanding is people thought I was saying steroids are useless and dont do anything.

Can I just clarify that I know that taking steroids allows you to train more regularly and increases muscle size for a given amount of training. Now lets move on:rolleyes:
But TBH it didn't look like you wanted a debate, it looked more like a rant

Well I dont see why it should have. I watched the film and put my point of view across on the subject matter. If I wanted a rant I would've given up on this thread long ago. It just so happens I think it is an interesting subject and has many implications for sport in general. Like I said I think the film gives a fair, unbiased view and presents more than enough objective info to make your mind up on the subject and all I was doing was sharing my point of view.

LOL @ sport bodybuilding. If they had to flex and pop ping pong balls at each other with their pecs then it would be a sport.
