Sick of it.....

Anybody else here COMPLETELY sick of reading all the "dole bashing" posts/threads in here?

Were in a recession, yes there are THOUSANDS of people unemployed.
(and yes i am one of them)

    So get over it
    .

Sorry but not everyone on the dole conforms to some narrow minded peoples stereotype of dole-monkey ness here, we dont all sit around eating cereal and watching tv all day.

I have an inbox full of emails about jobs i have applied for, replies from companies about jobs i applied for, and emails about interviews. I also went to college for four years and never imagined that when i graduated things would be like this. and im also sure im not the only one who is frankly well and truly fed up of alot of people on here calling us "wasters" and saying that we "will not be contributing to society in the near future".

Rant over..... anyone else feeling the same way?

What's the point of starting a new thread about it which will lead to another debate over the dole and more posters expressing views which you are 'sick of' already?

    Plus Nigs, another recession thread.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,635 ✭✭✭tribulus

The threads didn't really strike me as being dole bashing. Well, more bashing of people who've been on it years and are seemingly quite happy to stay that way i.e wasters.

I'm not on the dole yet though there's redundancies being announced in my company in two weeks. I guess it would piss me off being called a waster when I'm actively looking for jobs but I guess in times like these people will always point the finger at someone.

I would love a packet of banshee bones right now, where the hell would ya get a packet?

People on the dole are wasters, uneducated and more than likely criminals. Shouldn't we make them work on the railroad or something?

    No. You missed the point.

It was to other people who are like myself, working part time and being supplemented by the social welfare.
Its not an inviatation for more people to call us wasters.
It was hoped that maybe some of the other people in a boat like myself could express their opinions.

Threads, especially in After Hours are never a one way street i.e you'll get different views from different posters. What did you want a love in between all the unemployed out there? That is why by saying in the thread title 'I'm sick of it' you're inviting more posts and debate which you've already said you were sick of. Makes no sense to me.

Recession isn't just a buzzword. It's an economic term with a fairly widely accepted meaning: Two subsequent quarters of economic decline. Something like that.

Not many economists among the rank and file though who'd understand the precise meaning is there?
Mostly people get thier information form the media zeitgeist and this week's Word For Today is "Recession".

I really feel for those without a job. I would be well and truly fúcked if I didn't have one. I was lucky enough to find one back in November, but i'm on a 6 month probation and although the company I work for are in no way effected by the recession I won't be at all comfortable until I have a permanent contract signed.

I'd have no problem doing a masters, I have the grades for it but it wouldn't help out my situation which is lack of experience. All it would do for me is make another year older with more qualifications and still no experience, bah.

Well that doesn't make sense. In this climate, forget about what you're qualified in, just work at anything in order to have an income/get out of the house, but keep applying for degree-related stuff. You'll get it eventually.

Ah the other side of the story. That sucks, well would having an MA add a few figures to your salary when you do get something related to your qualification and experience?

I have a job, just might not for much longer and it's less than the dole, lol.
I've no problem staying at home for another 6 months if I can get some internship/unpaid work. I'm trying to plan ahead because I can't see things improving enough for a few years so I have to act now and get into a relevant industry.

Oh there's a tiny few jobs all right... not enough to meet the number of people being laid off though. So it's a bit much to expect a person to "get a job" just like that... maybe they will eventually but they could be waiting a long time.
And as for job websites - you can be sure, thanks to recruitment consultants, there appears to be far more jobs than there actually is. I know of one particular position a friend was going for and it was advertised by probably every recruitment consultant in Ireland - and sometimes more than one ad would be uploaded, just worded differently.

Lol... linking to Irishjobs.ie has just solved all our worries degsy, you da man!!

Yes, there are jobs, there will ALWAYS be jobs. The thing is, there are now less jobs, and instead of having 10 people compete for one job, you probably have about 30 competing*

Do you think 2% of the population who become unemployed over the last year did so for shíts and giggles?

*Numbers may not be exact, but you get the idea.

At the moment 'Buzzword' sums up this the current economic climate, It's easy fodder for the saggy faced bints and ogars in Dail Eireann.

It's the quickest get out clause for people who paid 450k using a 100% mortgage for a one bed apartment in Sallynoggin.

And theres the bare faced cheek of our public sector friends losing a few quid from their paypacket (which is going into their pension fund), IMO...Job Security is THE single most valuable thing at the moment and yet they will still pi$$, moan and strike at the first opportunity.

We live in a free market economy, an economy fluctuates due to things that were done or not done. I dont think there should be any interference from the government and let the banks collapse and let them claw their way out of the steaming pile of turds they landed themselves in...It needs to be let bottom out naturally. This artificial propping up of the economy is ill-conceived at best and championed by two solicitors, it's going to be a massacre.

    Bottom line is,

There is a huge amount of employment out there, only difference is that employers will be a little more selective nowadays, a survival of the fittest mentality will emerge and the slackers will stay on the dole and the efficient, productive worker will get the job..Ideally.

Its not officially a recession until butter vouchers are brought back.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

While that was ill-advised (I'm thinking back to the thread about the €2 million or whatever two-bedroom apartments in Stillorgan thread - and people didn't seem to think it was ludicrously frivolous to buy one of them. That was literally a few months ago - my, how things have changed) "recession" is not an excuse or a get-out clause for people who have lost their jobs and are having difficulty finding another one. Don't tar sensible but unlucky people with the same brush as the flash, over-spending eejits.

As a public sector worker (not permanent but haven't been told I'm definitely out of a job soon either) I agree completely.
