Keeping primates upsets many people! That is what Rory ment!

How much research have you done into primate care?

Why do you only want 1??? They are a group animal & should be kept in pairs or small groups of upto 12 individuals.

About keeping small primates Bond-007 has given some great advice so I hope you pay him heed.

*any in the sense of every single species of primate.

For the record Bond wasn't saying I had a problem with keeping certain exotics!!! I don't have a problem with certain people keeping certain animals. ;)

You obviously don't even have the basic information on the correct care of marmosets, they are not cuddly little pets that live off love alone. They are highly sociable and it is downright cruel to keep them alone all primates are socialble animals and must be kept in pairs and family groups.
They require sepcialised diets and a vet that really knows what they are doing along with a very large aviary with climbing ropes etc. heating etc.

What has not wanting a primate as a pet got to do with not having a loving bone in their body??? If anything it's very responsible for many people to choose not to have a primate once they realise the care they need.

Small primates are not toys as they mature they can become pretty narky.

To be honest - you obviously have not done any real research! Primates are social - they do not speak DOG & they do not speak HUMAN! They need at least another of their own species to be happy!

While hand reared babies can be very loving - they can develop very serious mental issues if kept alone. Also they change over night when their bodies say its time to mate & they become sexually active.

They take serious commitment & time - they need to be respected.

My baby Jack bites & has razor sharp claws - he leaps & we become covered in very long nasty scratches. Jack is also becoming a man & will not allow other men to be near him! Jack loves my dad but no other male figures. I am actively searching for Jacks wife.

Jack is wonderful but also a handful - when he is older he will be able to bite very hard & can cause us to need stitches etc.

So I suggest you need to do a lot more research before you even consider a primate as an addition to your household.

"Tis the same with many males.. I once had a fine young cockerel who would follow me everywhere, meek and tame and gentle. awwww...

Until spring came and the hormones started raging. Ay me!

Not intending to raise controversy again; but this raises issues of some regulating of who can buy exotics. We know that you and others are experts. But this example?

Sorella--since you do raise this so called controversy again why not start a thread about it?
We`ll keep a very close on eye so that it doesnt get out of hand.

What issue do you want me to clarify?

Yes Jack is alone at the moment - however I am scouring the whole of the British Isles searching for the perfect female to accompany Jack - then in late spring he & his wife will move outside into a large heated enclosure.

I have never had ANY intention of keeping Jack alone! He is well loved & is constantly with us - we work from home so he is always being made a fuss of. He loves cuddles & loves to be groomed. He is in no way suffering at the moment - I would NEVER keep a parent reared animal alone as this would cause severe mental torture. Any exotic takes a lot of time & commitment & your comment of "we only want one as we have two dogs and think one is right for are household" left me is serious doubt of how much research you have done. 1 is never ideal! Do you & your partner work? If so you would be leaving 1 primate alone for 8-10 hours per day maybe more - this is cruel! Do more research & then come back & tell me why 1 is not ideal!

We know that YOU know what you are doing; your caring is crystal clear.

As you say so succintly, the OP is a different matter altogether. And often folk will simply not take advice.

It is that that gives concern. Not you.
