Just curious. Watching the start of the soccer match and most of the lads didn't know it. Do you know the national anthem? Kinda know it? Not know it at all?

I know it off by heart, and love it, but not in a Ra-head kind of way, but in my own I'm proud to be Irish kind of way!

This post is in noway affiliated with Sinn Fein, Celtic Supporters or general tiocfaidh ar la spouting idiots - I hate that being proud to be irish is associated with that, but damn I love this little stupid badly run island of ours!:P

The French one's the best, but it's wasted on them altogether. The UK one is boring beyond belief. The Irish one doesn't seem to fit the profile.

I love the french anthem! It took a lot of concentration & energy to suppress myself from humming along last saturday.

As for ours, yeah I know it (a very patriotic primary school teacher made sure of that)

Yes, and the verse that starts with 'Seo dhaoibh a chairde'. Every day in the gaeltacht six years ago we had to memorise the words and sing it until we didn't need the words sheet anymore...every day. It was also sang at the end of every céilí.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

    Every single word, I think.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,095 ✭✭✭Wurly

Would you believe it, they never taught us it in school.

So I learned it myself - word for word. Just purely to show off, like. I'm glad I did though. It's nice to be able to sing your national anthem and actually know the words. I don't think i've ever sung it sober though...

No, he means the UK. England do use the UK anthem for sports, although bit the Commonwealth Games.
    England should use Jerusalem.

    Why? It's about the Crusades.

An interesting anthem is the South African one. Four verses, four languages and two completely different melodies!
