Not a multiple-choice poll for us distro-hopping strumpets! :pac:

That's how firefox looks in Crunchbang. The app on the right is called Conky and is a great system monitor while using minimum resources. See here. You'll need some extra fonts if you want the weather part of it to work properly, which I can send to you if you go down that road. Check out my post here to see what my conky looks like. I found the app itself straightforward to manipulate and also the startup options and menus in CB.

I actually use 3 distros atm. Gentoo x 2 at home. xubuntu on an old laptop and ubuntu on my machine in work.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭syngindub

xubuntu being ubuntu with all software being open source as apposed to proprietry drivers. is that right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,405 ✭✭✭Dartz

Xubuntu is Ubuntu with an alternate desktop environment. nothing more. In the backend of it, there's little difference with regards to proprietary drivers and the like.

Xubuntu uses the Xfce environment, not GNOME like Ubuntu, or KDE4.odd like Kubuntu.

I shifted all my server room machines to CentOS over the last few months.

I don't actually have any *nix machines on my desktop - at home or work!

It might be useful if people said why they chose that particular OS/distro. I wanted a stable rpm based distro, with enterprise like upgrade cycles.

i chose ubuntu because i like the update manager, package manager and Dell laptop works well with the distro. I used to distro hop a lot but got fed up doing this. maybe it's time for a change. Also chose ubuntu because i was just beginning with Linux at the time and ubuntuforums is a great forum / utility. Even though ubuntu is great for a newbie it's Linux at the end of the day so works like any other distro. Also use openSuse in work as i can install Oracle on it. Use HPUX in work also. Not my decision :(.. by the way, has anyone had success installing Oracle on other Linux distros, i know there is a Novell Distro but not interested in that

    Good idea:

Gentoo for speed for me. I wanted performance from the two machines it's installed on. Also was a great learning experience.

Ubuntu on the work machine: Convenience. There's just no messing with it.

Xubuntu: The laptop was a bit old. Runs quite snappy with xubuntu installed. I think it's a nice tradeoff between performance and features for older machines.

Similar to the DE thread I use different flavours for different things. I voted for Ubuntu because that's what I have on my main pc - and as it happens the other ones I currently use are all forks of Ubuntu - only semi-coincidence. HTPC is Mythbuntu, laptop was Mint but is now Ubuntu (but planning on switching that to Fedora soon and netbook is Cruncheee.

In answer to syngindub Cruncheee (Crunchbang) is excellent on a netbook. Low ram/cpu footprint. Very fast (much faster than the default Asus sesame street distro or Ubuntueee). And the Openbox DE is perfect for a netbook imo.

    add the reasons:

Work: Solaris 8 - speed and tools dependent and compatibility.

College: Solaris 10 - brand new sunray 270's

Home: mac osx - got it with my laptop,

Home: ubuntu 8.10 - ease of development with Gtk compared to others imo.

    I didn't give reasons did I :)
Ubuntu on main machine - quite simple really - I made the switch to Linux nearly 2 years ago and Ubuntu was the one I went with because of the simplicity and community support. I haven't felt the need to change since. While I know a hell of a lot more now than I did then I still like the Debian base. I no longer accept Ubuntu's defaults as gospel (e.g. first thing I do is remove its bugged OO and install the latest from OO.org) but it's a good stable distro.

Mythbuntu - obvious choice for a HTPC unless you want XPMC. I will warn against the 64 bit version tho - have had trouble with it - 32bit ftw.

Mint I went for because I'd heard good things about it - not the media aspect (it's not that hard to do sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras :P) but the interface. I actually hated it tho. So back to Ubuntu on the lappy when Intrepid was released.

Just moved over to Debian Lenny from Arch Linux.
Lenny has so far been a very nice stable release.

Arch is nice.....but I got a little annoyed when a -Syu left the system unable to boot.
Had to reinstate the ncurses libraries manually from a chroot so it could boot again:rolleyes:
The rolling release system isn't stable enough for my liking.

Lenny + dwm + slim = teh win!!!
