Using the N word when listening to rap

Was walking into college the other day with my mp3 player on random when some Geto Boys began to play. Being bored I began to rap along and as I was walking past a group of classmates I used the n word as it was contained in the song.

Cue people looking at me as if I had just raped a 4 year old in their presence. The only actual black individual in the group looked ready to kill me, one of my friends had to literally hold him back. Now I know the word brings up certain hurtful elements for people but at the end of the day it's only a word and in the context I used it I don't really see any harm.

So what do the members of after hours think should we self censor ourselves or just go with it?

Here's the song I was singing along to

Only black people can say the N word and get away with it, you cracker.

I hate that word so much, it's disgusting.

You were signing along to rap, no wonder they gave you dirty looks.

I'd find listening to that mysogynistic, self aggrandising, repetitive cliched crap more objectionable to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,749 ✭✭✭✭wes

Don't use the word. It will piss people off.

If you use it and people are pissed off, well you only have yourself to blame.

I would say only with white friends who you know for a fact don't care what you say, or entirely on your own.. but NEVER in public and NEVER EVER EVER EVER in front of a black person.. it's totally unacceptable..

You shouldn't be listening to that gangster rapper stuff. Pighead read once that just one listen to one verse of one of those songs turns you into a killer. And worse still makes you wear jeans that are far too big for you thus showing the world what underpants you are wearing. Whats wrong with The Eagles?

yeah it's like people genericising ALL of any particular group of music as being specifically "mysogynistic, self aggrandising, repetitive cliched" as being rather silly, even if most of it IS, that doesn't mean that ALL of it is, eh?

and isn't taste in music TOTALLY subjective anyway, judgementalord?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Actually I've only heard it said in US music videos, films and TV shows.
Doesn't really seemed to have caught on this side of the pond.

Not all rap can be classified so easily. I despise acts like 50 Cent and anyone who glorofies violence to women and such. Some rap can be very socially conscious and lead to major reforms in the way people view certain things. Take an act such as NWA, their lyrics were a social commentary which highlighted the neglect of many african american neighbourhoods.

I don't see a problem with pastie white eijits from the country singing along with NWA and other fine outstanding African Americans. Well done to you OP

Would you say the word slu.t if it was in a rap song?

Would you walk past a group of girls while rapping to yourself, "slu.t sucked my big fat dic.k?"

I hope this helps to put your disgusting behaviour into context.

What's with the whole "only black people can call themselves that" thing. I'm not allowed to say it becaus I'm white = racist!!!

African Americans were Surpressed by white british Prodestents.
Irish People were surpressed by white british Prodestents.
British prodestents were surpressed by white british Prodestents.

I feel that it is racist that I can't say it.

Well, any of that slum dwelling crap that *I've* ever heard is more about the "artist" telling us all how tough they are, how many bitches they got, and how much money they have. So yeah, pretty in line with how I called it tbh.

I can live without listening to some dick trying to overcome his inferiority complex, and pretending that I as a middle class Irish man have anything in common with him.

Pretty much, which begs the question as to why a subjective opinion bothers you so much.

Wooo, I is not from the country. If I was I would be singing along ot songs about wife beating and featuring a thumbing banjo backing track.

If you read my previous posts I don't listen to that type of rap as it jsut bores me. But tbh the word slut is jsut a word and I have no problem using it. I suppose being male middle class and white, noone will cut me a break.

Reminds me of when I was doing the whle apu thing about 'A Mounds bar is not a sprinkle. A Twizzler is not a sprinkle. A Jolly Rancher is not a sprinkle, sir. Perhaps in Shangra-la they are, but not here.' in my best apu accent whilst getting a roll at a deli talking to my friend, the guy behind the counter was so angry he had to leave the deli to go to the till trying to kill me with his eyes. Heh.

Political correctness has gone too far in my opinion. I was actually reading an article about the Black Irish a few minutes ago and was wondering if it would be acceptable to them to use the N word.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭Numina

Just because everybody thinks that it's a "bad" word doesn't mean that it is by nature. I have no problem saying it, but tend not to say it around black people because I don't want to have to explain myself.

The N word is used as a derogatory term. That's why these 'musical artists' use it.

If the word fluffypurplecushion was highly offensive, they'd use that.

  • It's not so much offensive as unbelievably sad. How old are you? If I'd seen you I'd have probably smirked at least.

If it's so derogatory why do many black people use it to describe one another? When someone like 50 Cent uses the term he uses it as an insult where as many other rap artists use it to highlight the implications that the word has.

As it happens I was listening to Lynard Skynard awhile back and a girl told me that it was offensive as all their songs degraded women.

    Disgusting behaviour?

    Jeez Louise, over-react much?

OP, maybe the black guy was more offended that you, a white bread Mo Fo was rapping, rather than the fact you mentioned the N word.

Black people use the N word to describe other unsavoury blacks. Much like we use the phrase sccumbag/layabout/waster etc.

I dont know why that guy got all up in your face about it. All you had to say was "sorry, I wasnt talking about you."

Nope, I'm in an actual 3rd level college which adults are supposed to be attending. That said we are trapped in the arts campus which may explain some of it.

Actually, the n1gga term was hijacked by the black populace (and quite rightly, given it's original usage).

It's original original usage was pretty neutral. It comes from the hispanic word for black (either Spanish or Portuguese).

It only became a bad word in the 1800s. Even Mark Twain and the like wrote routinely about "n1ggers" with no malice intended.

    Could do alright..

From now on I'd just try and keep your listening choice to yourself, and when asked what it is you're listening to say an inspirational obama podcast or the like

Its basically a bastardized form of Negro isnt?

A friend of mine was on a tactical exercise with the Defence Forces. They were going to defend a position and in Full Metal Jacket style shouting, he goes "Right, I want **** behind triggers". Then he looks up and realises the guy standing next to him is black. Queue loads of apologies, and hand wringing, and the black guy goes to him, in a voice that sounded like Roy Keane, "Sure I dont give a fiddlers. Im from cork".

Some people are more sensitive than others.

Oprah doesnt like it, end of.

Seriously tho it's not a word used with innocence or any kind of good meaning, it's a word that holds so much hate and negativity, I detest it and dont agree with it's use in rap music or any place else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭JangoFett

Me and my friends use it all the time because it's such a taboo word, but never in spite or malice.

And as far as singing along to it, it's a tough one to call. The rappers say it, and say it so often and flippantly that it IS hard...hmm

Screw it, say it, it's just a word that when the rappers say it means very little.

because the black man never enslaved the white man En Masse.

Also racism towards a constantly black minority has been endemic in society for a LONG time.

Fair enough, but apparently its so unoffensive they use it as a greeting. Seriously, white people that still find it offensive are ashamed of how the 'n's were treated in the 'gtfo off the path and walk on the road N' kind of way. And thats ok, and understandable. But this is no longer the case, and they use the word freely themselves.

Time to build a bridge tbh.
