The one that was on before was run by 3dtri. This one is being run by Belpark.

    Different beasts I'd say.

do either of them have a (good/bad) reputation?

A friend did it a few years back - he complained the swim course was too shallow, more of a paddle. Hope this is different.

This year is the first year Belpark are running the race.
They are involved in running triAthy.

thanks for the feed back..... i think this is the one that tool ray d'arcy did a few years ago.

the main beach at full tide isnt that deep, true. maybe over waist height, but most pools would be similar.

Is this one 'novice friendly'? Did my first in Athy on Sat. Definintely got the bug but Id be slow to sign up to anything that involves a tough upstream swim for example, or tough hills on the run or cycle. Still working on the fitness. Man, nothing prepares you for the post-cycle jelly legs, despite being warned!

I'll probably be doing this one if it goes ahead.

Anyone know what the cycle route is like?

    Lumpier than your ma's custard.

If its the same as the old 3dtri one there is a beast of a hill.

You can prepare yourself for that feeling by running off the bike in training. I've been doing lots of these the past few weeks and they certainly help, although i stitched bad on Saturday in Athy for the first 2km!!

the cycle is tough, there is one killer hill about a kilometer long. and another tough climb too. id say the swim could be hard enough as well, im from skerries and the where they plan on having the swim is nearly always chopy.
the run, i have been told, will be mostly flat.

    sounds like fun :)

i was just wondering if there is anyone here from skerries doing this tri?

id like to get in a few open water swims on the beach this week but obvioulsy dont wanna do that alone so would welcome any body who fancies it.

    let me know !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭barongreen

I'm was thinking of heading up there at the wkd, its only about 15 miles from me. maybe sunday?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

i have just completed my weeks training schedule and sunday is a rest day, but iv checked tides and hope to get out on monday evening about 6??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭neonman

Your post caught my eye since I'm close to Skerries myself but it seems there is only one level for the tri. No try a tri or sprint? I'm looking to do my first one soon and it would be nice to do it close to home but 750m swim would probably kill me.

    :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

    well skerries is a sprint.

there is a 'slow wave' for beginners though so maybe if u get the head down this week and get the laps in you might be ok?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭barongreen

neon man this will only be my second tri. 750 is a regular sprit distance. a few gentle seaswimms would familiarise yourself for it.

bananaman i'm actually off monday so it would suit fine ill pm you my number. i'm not familuar with the beach or what the course will be like for the event. i need a sea swim anyway so i'm up for it.

hey Bambaata, yea no worries. the more the merrier.

it looks like monday evening (for me anyways, cant get the monday off work)

Tide is in around 6pmish if that suits?

kennyb3 - wouldnt mind a partner for longer cycles. im pretty much doing doing high intensity, short work outs for the next week, and resting the week after. but im doing Kinsale Tri at the end of July so would be interested in doing a few miles with you before then if thats cool?

yeah that would be cool. what had you in mind? im no great cyclist only started few weeks ago but am doing about 150km a week, 3*20 - 30kms plus a 60 - 70km ride at the weekend (average is 26 to 28kmph). free 2 to 3 evening a week and at least one day at the weekend. moving to malahide in about a month but have no problem spinning to skerries or meeting you half way.

will be down to watch the tri anyway

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

yea im no record breaker myself so its cool!

il PM ya after skerries and we can sort something out.

Prob wear my Boards jersey at Skerries Tri (before the race) so if ya spot me say hello!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 Kaiser...

might head up for a practise swim Monday
Whats the triangular swim course like? ??
Cant find any previous results on the internet or indicitive times in what time it takes.
I did the triAthy downstream 750m in 9 mins comfortably so presume it shouldnt take more than 20 mins???

I presume it would be some with/without and across a moderate current. Is it deep? Can you stand all the way around if in trouble?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Poncherello

Anyone got the route of the cycle on mapmyride or google maps.
From the website it is very hard to see what roads it takes esp when not familiar with the area

    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,131 ✭✭✭Bambaata

6pm on monday suits me fine. twill be nice to get an OW in ahead of Mullaghmore the following weekend. ive never ben to skerries so where are ye meeting? Wud someone mark the meeting spot on google maps or maymyride etc please?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

it is probably best to meet atthe 'springers'. this is a flat concrete area painted white with loads of handrails at the start of the beach (easily visable from the main beach, to the left hand side as you look out towards the sea). its one of two spots around skerries head that people bath at.

if you drive up to skerries harbour there is a big car park up there and u will be easily able to find the springers from there. you can ask any one where it is, everyione knows the springers.

Il PM you all my number at the weekend so if you are lost you can call me and il tell ya where to go.

Kaiser - the swim will be deep enough i think, u may not be able to stand in parts.

this is the cycle route here

i hope it works it took me ages lol

its actually a little short, theres a small detour around the town at the end of the lap....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

I'm guessing this isn't a closed roads cycle?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

i know one of the lads organising it, i spoke to him a few weeks ago and he said it would be a closed road event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Poncherello

    Muchos gracias Bananaman !

..... wondering how shallow it really is though ?

if u havent entered already id advise doing it today.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

if any one is up for a swim today around 6pm - ish PM me and il give u my number. Regardless i will be at the Springers (white concreted area for bathing) at 6. Il be the balding young man in a Zoot wet suit!

i swam on Saturday at full tide. it was fairly choppy and very hard work i have to say.

(im not too sure what or where the actual swim route will be like so its hard to comment on the depth untill i actually see it)

I also cycled the route which has been marked by little yellow arrows on the road. its got one huge hill, a few tough smaller ones too. its also got 2 really fast sections - once u take the right after the first big hill and on the last KM or 2 when u join the main road back to Skerries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

Whats the road surface like? All national roads I presume?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

most of the surface is good, not all of it though and there are some serious potholes but they have all been marked by paint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Poncherello

I have an entry going if anyone wants it. Dont know what story is with transfers.

According to the website there is no registration on the morning of the event that I can see, only the evening before. Is that actually the case? I think I'll have to give it a miss if I have to trek to Skerries the night before to register. Anyone know differently or got the e-mail address of the organisers to check this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

no you are right, registration is the night before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

Which sucks, they are not gonna get people travelling for it if thats the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,034 ✭✭✭griffin100

    Cheers Bananamansgay

There's a good chance I won't be doing it then

    http://www.dublintri.com/skerriestimetable.html

link to timetable above confirming registration times (saturday 6-9).

I guess you could email the guys who run it and ask them what the crack is (dublin-triathlon@googlegroups.com), i think they prefer to do all registration the day before because it frees up a lot of time for the morning of the race.

They had the same set up for Kinsale last year, i thought this was the norm actually.....

    http://www.mapmyride.com/route/ie/dublin/743124507127164420

More detailed map, evelation looks like it could be quite a fast bike section apart from the 2 main climbs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

i did it on saturday and its actually a little different. between points 6 and 7 you take that left hand road a few hundred meters and do a turn around at a tree, head back the way you came and take the left back towards point 7, you then go straight through point 10 through the town (not taking the left hand turn) and go back to transition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

I presume it wasn't a full 20k then? The turn at the tree sounds a bit strange, maybe they are trying to make up the distance.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭bananamansgay

i clocked it on the computer and its 20K so yea looks like they just needed a bit extra and included the treee turn-around

    Hi Lads,
I intend on giving this a shot too but my training is not what it should be. I've been sick for a few days and I still have not got out into the open water anywhere to see whats thats like.

What will the swim be like? I am just hoping to stay around the back and out of the way for that as my swim is not great. I've only done 1 sprint that was pool based. Do you know if just around the strand area? Any strong currents around there?

    Thanks
    Getting Nervous now.
    Paul
