What to ask the doctor concerning fitness?

Hello all. I am going to my doctor tomorrow just to get a over all check up. Seen as I have changed my diet and because I am doing a lot of physical activity in an effort to burn body fat I thought it would be best to get a check up. I am getting the doc to do some blood tests. I would like to know if I have any food intolerences or vitimian deficiencies as well as making sure my over all health is ok.

I was just wondering though should I get any particular tests done and should I ask any particular questions concerning my diet and fitness?

    Thanking you in advance,

    Malman

IMO you probably don't need to ask the doctor any specific questions regarding fitness.

I realise how intelligent and hard working you need to be a doctor. However, these people are in a profession that caters for helping sick people. If you are not sick then I wouldn't advise you go into asking him or her any specific training or dietry advice.

Getting a check up is fine and it will give you peace of mind, especially if you're just about to start training. But I would advise you leave the more specialised questions to a competant personal trainer or better yet, fellow boardsies. :)

"Primum non nocere" - First do no harm

You'd be seriously hardpressed to find a doctor who'll push you out of your comfort zone in any way when it comes to exercise.

most doctors know shockingly little about fitness

they cater for the majority of sedentary people

not for the 10% that like to exercise vigourously

Your gp may not do all of these tests but a more comprehensive health check up will
    • bodyfat %
    • BMI ;)
    • free radicals in your skin (if they have one of those machines you put your hand in for 60 secs)
    • resting heart rate
    • heart rate under stress
    • urine test
    • blood test
    • cholesterol
    • spinal alignment

Thanks for that BossArky. I have been to the doc this morning. Everything is ok with the normal check up. He took my blood so when I go back for the results i'll ask him about the other things you mentioned.

With regards to heart rate; is there a recommended h. rate threshold which one should not go above while under stress?

I know my gym has a heart rate monitor so i could use it. Just wondering though - I bought a cheap one myself (25 euro approx) - Do you think it would be reliable?
