    D15 Covered in $%%^£* snow.
I am really starting to believe Jim Corr has moved Ireland towards the north of the globe to confuse the aliens...

only supposed to be 3 more days of this at most... but i reckon we should all chip in on one of these to lead our snow day spins in future:

Wlaked to shop. So peacful. No cars in Castleknock.
Everyone I passed said hi/good morning.
Folks are much friendlier in the snow.

UNder the snow, the ground is dry - so I plan on commuting on the bike tomorrow.

There's a good deal of (sore) ice out there folks, be careful.

Phoenix Park cycle lans are very very icy.
    Quays seem fine.

Dundrum -> Dame St fine, apart from one 'moment' coming from bird ave to clonskeagh road, but it's easily spotted. Footpaths look treacherous all the way from DD to ranelagh or so.
Edit: it's not even that cold out actually, was fine without overshoes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,860 ✭✭✭TinyExplosions

D8 - D9 is fine on the roads, a little damp but no ice. Footpath looks a little slippery, but not as bad as Friday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,400 ✭✭✭Caroline_ie

D15 = very icy, I dismounted at roundabouts. Footpaths are worse.

Had to get into work earlier .. so chickened out and brought the car.

The 500 yards to get out of the estate were a nightmare even in the car. After that the main roads in D15 seemed fine. N3 and to the quays and all along Ranelagh road to sandyford looked OK .. that is the roads .. the bike lanes are a nightmare and so are the footpaths.

I never thought I would say this ... but bring on the rain ...

I wonder how I can get the 500 yards out of the estate on the bike without falling on my arse 3 times ...

Missing my endorphine kick for the last 2 weeks .. even had to resort to going for a run yesterday :P

Bit hairy coming out of my estate (walked most of it), but once out on the main road it was all clear from Ballycullen/D24 into the city centre. Cycle tracks were typically icy so I just used the road.

The grit that they spray on the road tastes digusting :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 562 ✭✭✭barrabus

had a near spill in templeogue, changed my plan and stuck to the busiest road route I knew to town.
My slowest commute ever loads of people over took me.

If you have bigger tyres or ideally a mountain bike I'd suggest using that. Keep the pressure in the tyres as low as you can and do not touch your front brake whatever you do. I'm on the MTB at the moment and it's fine, cyclocross bike was OK but certainly less confidence inspiring than the MTB. 700x23c would not be fun.

Quite icy along the Sutton - Clontarf track in patches. On my way down to the coast, had the back wheel almost wash out as I took an icy turn. Part of the on-road bike lane on the Killbarrack Road is full of ice. I hope I can spot all these bad patches in the dark on the way home :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,860 ✭✭✭TinyExplosions

HTFU, use a fixie and keep your speed high, you can control the skids if you go fast enough :D

-this is obviously not serious advice of course, ymmv

I found the track fine but I do have extra weight to hold me down. Saturday there was snow on the track (Sutton-Clontarf) in 4 places but so you had to 'glide' through those sections without any hard accelleration.

I had to cancel my 5 hour ride saturday and I am getting pretty sick of this ice / snow / country :-). The South of Spain looks nice for Jan / Feb next year.

I trust that you saw the massive icy patches along certain sections?

Thanks Raam, was going to go for a spin out the coast but I ain't going out if its icy. Might wait till after lunch. My estate is still icy from last Thursday's snow (really!!) so I'll be walking till I hit the beaumont road.

I think you will be fine going out the coast during the day.

Not really Massive icy patches (almost sounds like a contradiction). From memory there were 2 frozen puddles which I could cycle around and 2/3 patches of frozen snow slush which I just took it easy. I cam in about 8:45am.

I certainly would recommend a cycle along that path today if people were keen.

I was passing the Huston tram bridge on the northside this morning. A cyclist fallen on the path near the bottle bank. An ambulance was there and he was being lifted on to a stretcher. Poor guy – might have been a bad head/neck injury. With newer pavement, it can be like glass when icy with no grip.

The forecast for this week seems fine! Although Saturday it says rain.. oh well!!!

Watch out for ICE patches on northbound cycle lane from loughinstown pretty much all the way to UCD...used the road all the way, the southbound cycle lanes looks ok but shall find out later

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭rottenhat

Yeah, southbound was fine this morning except for the top of Merrion Avenue - looked like a pipe had burst or something.

Makospeed is right. I just got in, cycled my brothers trek (potential buyer) with its big 35c tyres and they were slipping everywhere. Its that kind of half melted slush, but its frozen over so it can be like cycling in glass.

If I take the felt tomorrow I'm going in the bus lane, I'm sure the taxis will understand, extenuating circumstances and all that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 paranoid

I came in on the N11 this morning. Didn't even try the cycle track as it looked lethal. Rode in the buslane all the way and got no hassle from buses or taxis.

Maybe they realize that if you're riding a bike in the snow and ice you're triple-hard, and not to mess with you :D

Still icy/snowy around Sandyford- lunchtime spin today.

Hi Five Man ! Hard core ! Wooo !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Yeah thats the kind of snice (snow/ice) I was seeing, its almost like glass because it can't thaw and just gets compacted. Quite lethal if you're on a road bike.

Yeah was all fine, went out for a quick spin from clontarf to sutton, no ice/snow at all. Only dodgy bit was when an oul dear's dog on one of those extension leads decided to run across on front of me, just stopped on time and hurled abuse at her on my way off, not impressed. Nice day though :)

Conditions seemed to have got a lot more moderate on my commute home, just a lot of muckiness. Boo.

    Nice morning for a cycle.

Fine on my usual Dundrum-> Dame St route. No ice I could see, even the paths looked clear.

Was lovely this morning -slightly damp roads, but no ice!

nice road conditions alright, but the godforsaken headwinds were back. definitely would prefer tailwinds in the morning and the headwinds for the trip home...

No, didn't have time, had to collect my mam from work....was her birthday.
Only did the 16km of the cyclepath, might try driving to sutton next monday and do a couple of trips around the head and build it from there :)

    LOL.
I always thinks it's funny that I have been known to ski the same routes in the winter that I cycle in the summer, in France. I didn't think it would apply in Ireland!
