No they are not a must. The clue is in the word - 'supplements.' An addition to your diet, not something that is a must. A must is good clean food and a good mix of protein, fats and wholegrain carbs. That's all you need. Oh, and hard work!!

    A good sensible reply.

I can understand why a professional athlete or amateurs performing at a high level would include supplements as part of their regime.
For the rest of us, even those of us who train hard, I don't believe they are generally necessary. There is way too much emphasis put on supplements for people who are just training as part of a healthy lifestyle and/or engaged in pastime sporting activities...I think that is most people who post here...so the advice of celestial is spot on, imo.

I used to take protein shakes myself and it can be convenient, particularly if you have a busy day. I now put the effort into getting my nutrition from my meals.

+1, I very rarely take protein shakes. But they are handy PWO if you've limited time.

If you really wanted it I expect you could order it online to africa. Many here order it online as it ends up cheaper anyway, even with the postage. Could well be cheaper to eat meat in africa though...

    /me waits

Some time ago I said that some jaffa cakes and meat would be grand PWO instead of a shake with whey and dextrose and I got eaten alive for it.

Here's something to a similar effect Khannie. Dunno if that was posted before...

    Don't mind em Khannie.

Here's what's good post-workout. Hold your collective breaths:
    food and drink

Yes you will see a lot of results when weight training without supplements.
The catch: you need to get the correct amount of carbs and protein post workout. Get lean protein and fast acting carbs.

Maintain a good quality diet throughout the day getting in good protein, complex carbs and healthy fats. Try to keep foods high in sugar, salt, saturated fat to a minimum. Allow yourself the odd snack and unhealthy meal here and there.

Make sure you train right and get plenty of rest.

How do you make up for not taking supplements?

1)you need to get the correct amount of carbs and protein post workout. Get lean protein and fast acting carbs. This makes up for post workout recovery shakes

2)Eat plenty of carbs before a workout to ensure you will have lots of energy. Also make sure you are eating your meals at the right times to have maxmimum energy This makes up for energy supplements

3)Get enough sleep every night to aid recovery. this makes up for recovery supplements

4)If you want to gain weight, just make sure you are eating more calories than you need. this makes up for mass building / weight gain supplements

5)If you want to lose weight, take in less calories than you need. this makes up for fat burners

So you cover post workout shakes, energy supps, recovery supps, weight gainers, and fat burners.

For more info and specifics have a look at the stickies. If you stick to this you will see good results.

Sorry Khannie. I feel I've let you and the whole forum down. I like to think I'm pretty quick to beat down the shake junkies. If it ever happens in future, just post this picture...

OP: My experience of Africa is that you get the best meat in the world there. I spent my time there eating huge steaks for next to nothing while training in pretty basic gyms.

I made much better progress than I usually would in Ireland. Though maybe that was the local beer!!

You just made my otherwise horribly sh*tty day, bearable.

Great photo! And great article Dead Ed. Nice find.

Things I think are worth buying if you train 5-6 times per week:
    Whey, Creatine, Glutamine

Things that could easily replace them if you didn't have access:
    Meat, Milk, Vegetables

Things I think are worth buying if you train 2-3 times per week:
    Groceries.

Do you know any supplement stores that sells groceries?

    Hanley is Mister Jaffa Cakes!:pac:

I use PWO time to indulge in simple carbs, why force down bland glucose/protein blends when I can eat high glucose/sugar low fat chocolate cakes, washed down with a frosty strawberry milkshakes.

That photo of Poindexter is class, there was a brilliant youtube link a while back with a spoof massgainer ad, similar idea to the southpark skit, can't find it now though...
