Im getting sick of my gym, and I want to starting lifting at home

i know irish-lifting are reasonable, but i cant afford to buy everything new, so if i could get a decent second hand rack, i would be able to buy weights, or vice-versa

Or if anyone knows of any gyms that are closing down or throwing stuff out

i looked at adverts.ie, and they had some good stuff, but unfortunatly its all sold :(

I dont think you are going to get much cheaper than Irish Lifting. They have a power rack for €350 which is very reasonable. Cant seem to link it now.

yeah, if i could get some decent olympic plates, i would buy their heavy rack, but if i was to buy everything new, it would cost about a grand, so im looking for some decent second hand plates

maybe i could just nick a few from my gym :p

Park your car/jeep by the emergency exit. A bicycle is going to make this difficult for your getaway
Show up early and be the first in the gym.

It's hard to find good quality stuff second hand. I was looking at adverts.ie for a good while and didn't find much.

I bought a 185Kg Olympic rubber coated set from power house fitness in the UK for 405 euro including shipping, the heavy power rack from irishlifting and the bench below for 135 including shipping. All I'll need for a good while.

It is a nice rack. My only complaint about mine is that the inner chin ups bar on it are not levelled, one is 1 cm below the other. You can't see them on the website picture. Other than that it's a great rack, and I didn't find any other that came with dip bars and plate holders at that price. Check out the bench in the link if you're looking for one, it's a very good bench and I don't think you'll find anything better than that at a similar price.

    http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/powerhouse-185kg-olympic-rubber-barbell-kit.php

It was the best price I found. It's listed at 375 GBP, but they give you a 20% discount which is listed on the website (ask for it on the phone) and shipping to Cork was 65. At the conversion rate last week it ended at 405 Euro.

The set is nice, 7 foot barbel, 4 20 KG plates and the plates seem to vary in weight very little. All my 20 KG weight 20.1 KG. They're hexagonal plates though, not round like in the picture.

They didn't ship the collars though, so I had to call again for those and I'm still waiting for them.

Anyone here ever made their own power rack? I remember seeing it done before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 570 ✭✭✭hooplah

I bought a cheaper bench here on ebay. Similiar in dimensions to irish lifting but cost me €75.

Someone here (it may have been slemons) was talking about making a power rack out of scaffolding poles. And there was a pic of a "power rack scaffold" going around.

JonnyWildBoar off powerliftinguk was the first guy I saw who did that. He did a really good job, it was about 3 years ago and as far as I know it's still going strong.

I have seen them made from wood. I would like to make one that really does double up as a clothes horse! or something else.

I remember on dragons den a few lads had gym contraptions that doubled up as other things, none were much use though.

i wouldnt trust either off those

the first one looks solid but the pins holding the bar look way too flimsy as someone just mentioned

the other one just looks wrong

these things are not that expensive

after u bought the wood and other materials im sure the saving wouldnt be massive compared to just buying a proper rack

also u have to think of the time involved in making one

    time is money

Even though there was no demand I've decided to post up pics of my home built rack.

Also attached is my new addition of a reverse hyper machine. This recession has given me too much spare time that I've got to fill building stuff.

    Wow.

    Awesome work.

Looks like the EliteFTS stuff was your inspiration??

Very Impressive - what did they cost you to build in terms of cash for parts and hours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭The_Bullman

Not sure what was the inspiration for the rack. Its been quite a while since I welded it up. I remember using google images a fair bit to get ideas(same for the reverse hyper) I may have gotten inspiration from the eliteFTS - I can't remember

Yeah, I just searched for wooden racks on google images, I was not recommending them as good designs, just to show it could be made from wood, which is more feasible to most DIY people.

It would be best to copy professional designs, and of course test it well in a safe manner. I use 3D design software with FEA and can tell it the material etc that I am using, then I can place loads on it and see where the stresses are, and move around support members etc.

Are there any other good equipment manufacturers to look at?

Most of ironminds stuff is rated to ridiculous loads, never heard of elite before, just looking at the site now.

@ Bullman, did you ever look into making a glute ham raise bench? GHRs from big manufacturers have a reputation for being poorly designed and flimsy.

People pay big money to get GHRs from the likes of EliteFTS. I think GHRs from Watson and Pullum Sports in the UK also have a good reputation.

Anyone know where to get plans for a squat rack?

@ The_Bullman. That looks like exactly like what i want, if it holds 140kg i'd be delighted, never see myself squatting that but just in case!!

The main reason most GHR's have a bad rep, afaik, is because the pad isn't tilted like in hte one you pictured. It's meant to make a big difference, but I dunno.

A lot of time with Elite they talk down anyone and everyone to pimp their (wildy overpriced, imo) products. There's no doubt they design good kit. But it's very expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,863 ✭✭✭kevpants

    Bullman that's some good work.

In these times being able to do stuff like that could earn you a few quid.

If I had space for equipment at home you'd be getting a PM with some plans from me! I just don't trust the cheaper power racks that get pimped here. They seem designed to support the standard weights set, 140kg, and I really wouldn't feel confident dumping a larger squat in them having seen some of them up close.

Just to leave a record of this. Mick from Irish Lifting sent me two new chin up handles. :)

    Good costumer service

Second hand gear that's never been used and half still in box.
Still cheaper then buying new but whatever.

It would be 990 on irish-lifting, looks like it is from there. It is just hunks of steel, second hand wouldnt worry me too much, unless the were rusty or the bench was torn. Not like second a hand PC or clothes. But irish lifting would deliver too for free.

People invest in gold, steel is a pretty good investment too, and you get to use it! most of my plates were got at ~€1 per kilo, and are now double that new. I might get more second hand than what I paid originally.

Yeah I picked it up from Irish Lifting but as luck would have it I'm moving so haven't the room for it.
I'm waiting for Mick to drop over the weights, so they'll be brand new still in their boxes. Same really.

I welded up my own squat rack onto a york bench for 30 euros.
I got 1.5 inch box iron and about 20 welding rods. I don't have pins in it as I'm the only person who uses it.Very strong and not to hard to make.
If you wanted plans i'd send you the ones I have made.

RE: GHR. There's a photo of me floating about doing GHRs off a lat pulldown and if I remember I'll take a photo of us using a foot attachment from a pull up/dip station to do some GHRs.
