I see Jeremy Clarkson is in trouble again for calling Gordon Brown this.

    http://www.examiner.ie/World/ideyaukfmh/rss2/

    Is he Scottish? Yes.

Does he have one eye? Yes.

Is he an idiot ? Even Clarkson is entitled to an opinion.

I dont see the problem here.

Calling him an idiot is fine, calling him one eyed because of a sports injury he suffered as a child and which could have led to permanent blindless is not.

Ah good old fat, stupid, English heres-my-bank-details-Clarkson!

FFS, the BBC has changed forever now post the Ross-Brand controversy. I see from the article that Carol Thatcher was also dropped from her show after making a dubious comment in private.

The BBC feels it must come down hard on the slightest slip of the toungue now for fear of having double standards or valuing one of their presenters more than another. The days of free speech are gone.

    Why not?

I think there is a PC emergency somewhere and you are needed on the PC brigade.

Brown lost his sight in one eye after an accident playing rugby as a teenager.

Have to say I never knew this until now.

The remark goes too far imo and I'm no PC brigader

Hang on a wee minute. The sports injury he suffered as a child led to him having one eye.
    Hence he is now "one-eyed."
Idiotic Scottish cyclops would probably have been a bridge too far though.

I see no problem with Clarksons comments. Two entirely factual points, followed by a matter of opinion that he, and many other people, are entitled to have.

Jeremy "everyone's entitled to my opinion" Clarkson does it again...

I agree. He didn't say anything that wasn't true. It wasn't slanderous.

Free speech isn't always utilised the way we might like it to be. But it's free speech nonetheless, and I'd rather live in a country with it, than without it.

    So at least someone is.

I personally find (behind the throwaway quips) that Clarkson is one of the few Journalists to have the balls to say what sometimes needs to be said -- ok this wasn't needed, but it's a mark of the guys bravery. Better him than all the other sheep we read/hear in the media.

    Plus, he's funny :pac:

In his apology, he said he didn't mean to offend any scottish, any disabled people. But refused to apologise for calling gordon brown an idiot

he said he didn't mean to offend any scottish,

did he insult scottish people by calling the PM Scottish? He is Scottish.

I say so what. He has his opinion and you can choose to agree with him or not. Frankly I don't care how controversial a comment is, how sexist, racist, homophobic, whateverist, I can choose to disregard it. In the scheme of things clarkson calling him a one eyed eejit hardly merits the column inches it received.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Its no different than calling Clarkson a lanky, Curly headed, British Idiot.

And i hate how other people are up in arms by a statement that Gordon Brown probably isnt even bothered about.

He knows hes Scottish, has one eye and is an idiot already.

Or the fact he's Scottish come to think of it

Mentioning that was just wrong wasn't it? Very embarrassing for the PM to be told, in no uncertain terms, that he is Scottish.

    Answer me truthfully now.

How many eyes does Gordon Brown have?

Do you think he knows how many he has?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 870 ✭✭✭Pen1987

It's more the implication that being Scottish makes him somehow worse than a PM who was one-eyed and British that I'd find offensive if I was Scottish.

Sure it's true, he is scottish, it's the context of the use of "scottish" that's offensive.

Personally I'd find it more insulting if someone called me "stupid Irish cunt" than a "stupid cunt", because it implies that Irish and stupid go hand in hand.

    Similar to one-eyed and idiot.

Scumbag 1 to taxi man, "you black fuck"

Scumbag 2 to taxi man "you fuck"...

which says more about the scumbag? Although strictly speaking they're almost the exact same factually correct sentences.

I have to admit that Pen127 probably has a point about the juxtaposition of Scottish and Idiot. Nevertheless a minor issue.

Jesus, Britain is a Nation of curtain twitchers. Two sides of the middle class divide are at war: with one group of Guardian Reading twichies getting OUTRAGED over the use of the term Golliwog ( but not Leprechaun, seemingly) in a private conversation - the other DAILY MAIL twitchies getting OUTRAGED over Brand and Rosses silly actions.

EDIT: We should send over Joe Duffy, or at least sell the format. They dont really have that kind of thing - a national show in the early afternoon for people who have more time to get OUTRAGED than average.

Nope, the other 99% who chose to disregard his prejudice towards disabled people, Jews and homosexuals.

Which is exactly the same as Clarkson calling the Prime Minister of a country Scottish, One-Eyed and an idiot.

Now where exctly was the equivalent there.

I think we need to just end threads when the violators of Godwins laws come rushing in to whine about Nazzism - this isnt the fastest I have ever seen but it is surely the most inane.

    ( Also it wasn't 99%)

    What the man said.

    Big pile of ****e!!!!
The only thing that could be classed as mildly insulting is the word 'idiot'. Everything else is true.

    I don't see a problem.

The Guardians online readership is mainly backing Clarkson and Thatcher at least in part - ie thier freedom to say it without getting sacked/fined/whatever.

As for the comment - meh. So many things to worry about, Clarskons thoughts while on tour should near the bottom of "stuff to fret over" list

Maybe. I visit England a lot - am here now - and pretty much my social millieuthere is the Guardian reading Public School boy class - generally they are opposed to Thatcher and support Brand. I lean the other way because Thatcher - whose comments would be bullying were she to say it in front of a black man - was in private conversation, and Brand's actions would be criminal, or abusive even were he not on air. Calling an old man to tell him that you shagged his granddaughter is generally unacceptable behaviour, and at least Ross has realised that ( if his apology was not phoney).

Brand I cant stand. Ross I like, Clarkson meh - not into cars.

This is rubbish, Clarkson's oratorical style calls for as many adjectives as he can come with. Its one of the things that makes him entertaining to watch and entertaining to read.

And calling someone scottish or irish is not an insult. Its an adjective for the country they are from. If some one called me a bearded, Irish Man, then I would not be insulted. If someone called me a bearded Irish idiot, I might be. The fact they mention where I am from is irrelevant. Its just people like to put labels on each other.

You completely missed the point I made. I said calling somebody Irish is not an insult, it's the context he used it in that made it insulting.

The same way that someone could call you a "paddy" and mean nothing by it, or they could call you a "paddy" and mean it in derogatory way.

The sad point about this whole thread is that people give that long jawed ligger Clarkson any credence.

    Ah I see.

In that case you missed the point of the complaint made against him. It was not the Scottish Nationalists Party who complained about Jezza's comments, nor was it the office of the Prime Minister, it was the Royal Society for the Blind. Why? God knows.

Not querying your points at all. See your point that asking him his opinion about the British PM is fairly useless however he is a columnist there on the sunday times in a capacity where he does not tend to reference driving. I think it's a bit off that he is being hounded for saying what most of the country is probably thinking. It's a concern that a man can be hanged by stating an abrupt anti-government opinion in today's world where most of us have the freedom to say what we want.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭FlutterinBantam

    Good points there Doctor.

However accentuating someones physical shortcomings to score crude "political points" when one is on the outside looking in,in a far away country, is to me the epitome of of poor taste and more the pity that some fasten on to those kind of people instead of asking. "What the fcuk have they ever done for the country"?

    Thats just my point.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭vorbis

I'd agree, I mean he could just have called him an idiot. The phrase "one eyed idiot" is pretty much the same as saying "black idiot". Most people would be abhorred if you called someone a black idiot so why would it be different for disabilities?
