So, I'm planning on shaving for the first time this weekend as I have an undesirable growth above my upper lip that gives me the appearance of a rapist.

Basically, what do I need? Do I need to buy a razor and cream or what? i just dont know how this works! What is a good, reasonably priced razor?

    Advice please!

A Gilette Razor and and can of gel/foam, should set you back about 20 quid?

    Thats all you need.

You could get some cheapass disposables and use soap if needs be.

    Not advisable.

Forget soap, I use Shockwaves hairgel when I have no shaving cream.
THE BEST A MAN CAN GET!
Get yourself a good razor, I'd recommend Gillette Mach 3.

    I'd recommend Gillette Mach 3.

+1 no need to complicate it with 4 more blades:)

You could of course go with the new Gilette Mach Fusion Ultra Stealth Turbo; she's pretty sweet, got that titanium alloy chassis and a nifty little power system:

pfft, no, you want one of these...

Seriously, any razor will do, packet of 10 bic disposables, whatever. I get mine in aldi :D

Hoping to transition to a safety razor soon though...

Get anything that says shaving gel / foam on it, wash your face in warm / hot soapy water, make sure it's well hydrated, lash the foam / gel on, shave (carefully), job done :)

I'm usually all for going for generic alternatives to things, but in this case, cheap disposible razors just don't compare to multi-bladed razors by the likes of Gilette. Less irritation and less chance of cuting yourself badly. They're also not that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

Has anyone seen a cheap disposable razor with a single blade recently? Even the 10 pack of Bics has two blades. I've tried electric razors (whole world of other problems) and a few different disposables and I can't say I saw that much difference. Although I admit the mach blah blah one with the battery action was fun :) (no, of course I didn't make lightsabre noises...) I see that a lot of them seem to have 3 blades, and strips of soothing stuff either side (as seen on my cheap aldi razors), which seems to get the job done. Maybe I just didn't stick with the more expensive razors long enough to get the difference.

The science of multi blade razors really is a bit iffy though. The claim goes that the first blade pulls the hair away from the skin and before it can retract, the next blade has cut even closer and so on for more blades. Seems fine, but there's two reasons this can be bad... One, they can often end up simply pulling the hair out and many find they cause irritation because of this effect. Two, if your face is properly treated and hydrated, hairs naturally extend much further and so can be cut closer.

Also I generally just get annoyed with hairs getting stuck in the razor, which just plain doesn't happen with old fashioned single blade options.

All that said, I'm still going to finish off my current supplies of disposable multi blade razors before I switch to a hopefully better system :)

I dont think the science could be any clearer as this video illustrates with the new Gillette 3000......

    Also Aldi/Lidl blades are SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITE

    Or this one!

*runs out to get gilette 3000* :D

and i just meant a cutthroat in general, those were the first that came up in google...

lol, I've tried gilette*, wilkinson*, and aldi razors, and I found no significant difference. Where I have found a big difference is when proper shaving technique is used and the skin is properly treated, taking the extra time to really soak your face in hot water and lather properly is definitely advisable.

*hooray for free razors in freebie bags on campus :)

I've never used anything other than Bic disposable razors. Sure I get the odd cut or 20, but they're cheap dammit!

Shaving can be a bit of a nice ritual. I keep meaning to get around to buying a straight razor and some proper gel/oil to shave with. Might as well enjoy life's little routines. Definitely not something to try at first though.

Got bored a while back and sharpened a filleting knife to see whether I could get it fine enough to shave with. It was fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,629 ✭✭✭raah!

If you keep shaving without cream, eventually your beard-face skin will get rougher and less liable to rippage. I'm trying that out now... it probably works :).

Meh, electric razors for the win. Much easier.

Not that I need it too often. BUT SOME DAY! :pac:

Shaving is fun if you try and do it to the rythm of a song.

Agreed. Women's razors are terrible! Although I've taken to epilating lately...

If you get a decent growth, think about getting it done one a week or so in a barbers.

    Personally, Gilette fusion, dry shave.

    Perfect!

I cant use the Bic disposable , to many cuts but I find the twin gillette ,blue 5 pack disposables great and at least 3 shave per razor .

Also quite cheap compared with the other versions availbale .

Seriously though, I can barely brush my teeth and listen to music, partly because I cant really hear the music but how and ever.

I find the shave isn't as close as it used to be but maybe that is my crap razor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭cocoa

lol, ok, I know I'm the one who first suggested it, but I wouldn't recommend to anyone to start using a straight razor from the get go. Personally, I'd be afraid to use one before first using a safety razor for a while, to get used to the idea of doing most of the work myself (no pivot head, single blade).

Anyone who's really interested there's some good stuff (quite ironically) in the beards and hats forum, and for tutorials, look up mantic59 on youtube, he's great :)

Also, electric razors are nice for being handy, not needing much preparation / time, good for traveling with, but I find they generally irritate my face more, make it more difficult to get that resistant patch of hair, and don't shave so close. But if all you want is something handy, they're grand. Possibly the more expensive ones are better though.

I've never had a shave in a barbers, but personally I'd much prefer to learn to do it myself. I really want to get a proper shaving brush sometime soon...

I think you should take the easy way out. Don't shave.
In time you'll come to realise that shaving is poxy, and relish your stubble. I haven't shaved in ages, I kinda like the warmth it gives my face.

    ^^*shudders*^^
btw make sure you use some sort of foam/gell/soap etc. as,yes your skin toughens up ,but so does the hair,my bro shaves but has PERMANENT sandpaper stubble at 26!!
my first was mach 3 (have never left it )and personally foam is better than gel but if you can get those lime soap flakes (the one's barber's use when they "whip it up") those babies are the s***

nearly my favourite 20 minutes of the day if i decide to do the whole hog on it or before going out. Put on a few good tunes and its enjoyable

nice folding straight blade i picked up years ago
    piping hot water
    apply nivea gel
    shave down first
    rinse face with hot water
    apply more gel
    shave up
    rinse face with hot water
    rinse with freezing cold water
    towel dry
make sure other areas such as locks, nose etc are nice and tidy
then hit the shower (if necessary)

apply Nivea After Shave to face

    ready to face the world

Can't beat electric razors, no foam and no cuts. Can get decent enough one's in Argos for around €50, which in the long run will save you a fortune.;)

My second need to correct someone, if your gonna make a cliched (bad) emo joke, do it right!

Listen to this (Particularly the chorus, for those of you lacking in attention span/tolerance for such awful music, pay attention from 46secs onwards)

I don't count Joy Division as indie. Joy Division are, in many ways, proto-Industrial, as they heavily influenced modern industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails and Einstuerzende Neubaten. People would like them to be labelled indie so they can say "I don't like that it's indie" much in the same way they negatively label David Bowie as glam.
I can't stand MCR, Hawthorne Heights, or any of those moany gits but they owe a debt to Ian Curtis and Joy Division for bridging the gap between punk and grunge. Sometimes when I happen to hear MCR I can hear the stomping bassline of Peter Hook in there. (couldn't name any songs as they're all piffle to me).
Please stop calling them indie, it hurts my head.
...So yeah. Shaving is fun, do it sensibly.

They're (were :p) and indie band, get over it:D

And what I dislike slightly more than the persistant pigeonholing of bands, is the really strained connections people draw between bands. Theres no denying Trent Reznor was a Joy Division fan, but itd be alot more correct to say stuff like Gary Numan synth orientated music had a much more profound influence on industrial.

Theres a pretty distinct difference between MCR and Hawthorne Heights, one of them being kinda shíte, one of them being my FAVOURITE band ever, one of them making tediously one sided music that's fun to laugh at, one who make constantly changing music (in terms of progression from album to album).

    Anyway, shaving, *strokes chin*
