I would be interested in this endeavour, please sign me up to your newsletter.

This seems modest compared to your previous trips :D

Would definately be interested. Should be free all summer.
I was thinking about cycling down the West Coast though. Never really properly seen it.
One or the other I reckon.

By the way .. very interested in that backpack of yours on your website .... will PM you with some questions if you don't mind .. :)

Hi guys, glad to see the interest in the Dublin to Malin to Mizen cycle!

To Blorg - best way to stay updated with the plans is keeping an eye on www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/M2M. The trip is shorter than other ones but in the past I had the luxury of taking a couple of months off work and being fairly confident of finding a job afterwards! This one is ideal for recessionary times - you don't need to quit your job to do it, or if you don't have one well we're staying in hostels and apart from food and beers (even that is optional!!) costs will be minimal!

To Snack_ie - We thought about a longer route via Connemara etc but it would have added on more time. Hope you can join us anyway!

To Short Circuit - Thanks for the PM on the gear. When we met people along the road from Istanbul to Ireland trip the most common question we had was "where is your gear?", and they were always gobsmacked when we pointed to the little, compact packs "hanging" off the back of our saddles. (For people who don't know what we're talking about, check out the second pic at this link: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=3Tzut&page_id=70621&v=Tr ). Anyway, regarding the bag-supporting "holder" well without wanting to sound like a salesman for a thing, the best thing is that you literally slide out bag-supporting holder in a jiffy and are left with a tiny light-weight aluminium pipe that weights practially nothing. Here's the link to the supplier's website for the bag holding system: http://www.in-sy.de/main/M_038.htm?9. It's in German but the picture tells the whole story. If you need a hand in ordering something let me know. I hope the company are still operating as I haven't been in touch with them for about 4 years.

Many thanks for your reply ... sorry about taking this thread in a completely different direction ... just a couple of quick last questions
    1. Do you have to get the bag and undersaddle piece separately .. or do both come together if you buy a bag
    2. Can you just get the undersaddle piece and the rod which slots into it and then get your own backpack ... or is the aluminium piece built into the backpack
    3. How were the company to deal with ... with regards to shipment etc?

    Sorry for the thread hijack.

Hi Short Circuit, No wors about hijacking the thread for your obsessive and frenzied luggage queries! :D Any of the guys on the Istanbul to Ireland trip will tell you I've an unlimited appetite to talk about the In-Sy bags and their holders! Anyway, bet you're wondering when am I finally going to answer your questions so here goes:

    1. The bag comes with the supporting rod / frame (together costing 55 euros). You can to but the little under-saddle supporting slot separately for 19 euros.

    2. The supporting rod / frame comes with the bag and there are little plastic slots on the bag into which you slot the supporting rod / frame so you can't really use your own bag.

    3. When I bought off the company about 4 years ago I went totally mad and bought about 7 of the bags (with supporting rod / frames) and under-saddle slots and also the small under-saddle tool bags that hang under the under-saddle slot. They gave me the lot at half the price at what it's advertised on the site, and shipped it to me for free to Dublin. It's a small, family run company and were really friendly.

It might be worth kicking them off an email at the http://www.in-sy.de/main/dialogue.htm# page and clicking on "Zum Formular" link, or giving them a call at + 49 7541 43280. I'd be very interested in how you get on - and if they even still exist as I haven't been in touch since that time 4 years ago. If you are ordering let me know as I might throw in a thing or two into the order.

I'd be very interested, and I think the girlfriend would also. Do you expect many people to be doing it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭GearoidP

Hi, we've about 10 people so far seriously interested in doing the whole thing, and are expecting a bigger crowd for the last two days in Kerry & Cork, as I've a brother in Tralee drumming up support there.

We're keeping the organization pretty "loose". People can join and leave as they wish, and need to book their own accommodation. There's nothing stopping people cycling at their own pace and route on any day or days. I've put links of suggested places to stay on each of the day's links on www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/M2M. Other than that, there are no "shared" costs (e.g. no support car or anything like that), except for the bus we are hiring to bring us back to Dublin on the 19th of July. We are trying to fill this bus with 15 people in order to keep the cost per person for the bus at 50 euros. First come first served on the bus!!

Cool, we'll I get back to you.

Going to do abit of research first into the whole idea - have a friend who cycled down the west coast so I might talk to him just to get an idea of the logistics involved in organising it successfully, and do abit of research into my whole idea.
I have you website now in my favorites so I can get back in touch with you soon.

    Cheers

Hi Guys, great to see the interest. There's no panic in giving names & numbers if ye decide to go, unless ye want to avail of the bus we're hiring to bring us back from West Cork & Cork City to Dublin on the Sunday 19th of July (www.cremincoaches.com). If you definitely want a place on the bus, let me know.

If any wants to join me for a 2-hour training run to Rathoath and back, let me know and we can meet up at Day's hotel http://www.dayshoteldublinairport.com/location.php

And now for something completely different : I bought one of these "Karma Pro" lights for about 130 euros from Richies in Swords (the distributor in Ireland in AB Cycles). They really light up the road meaning you can go for night spins even in the dead of winter:

    Guys,

We're doing this for Goal's work in India where my cousin Richard is working. Goal have just put an article on it on their homepage http://www.goal.ie/ and scroll down the page to the article with the map of Ireland. If people want to raise funds for another charity, or none at all, that's cool......... On last year's trip (www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/istanbul2ireland) we raised 1 euro for each of the 5165 km cycled.

    Hi Gearoid,
On what days do you do the training run to Rathoath and back? Would be interested in joining you. I usually do Howth/Rathoath/Dunshaughlin and then back via the N3 to Blanchardstown/back of the airport/home.

You did well to get that light for 150 euro. I bought a twin-headed CatEye a couple of years ago through a bike shop in Donaghmede Shopping Centre. It cost me 250 euro! However, lights up those North County backroads like a car headlight!

By the way, I hope that nobody minds, but I have committed to using the event as part of my fundraising for Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, where my late daughter, Helen was a patient for the greater part of her life. I have set up a section of my website for the event. See http://the-pedaling-pensioner.org/M2M.html for details. I has taken me every evening for the past week to get it set up!

    Hi Eugene,

Great to see you've updated your own site with the Malin to Mizen cycle and that's a great cause you're raising funds for. Let me know if any evening at 6:30 - 7pm suits you to meet at Day's hotel at the top of Ballymun / Santry avenue for a spin out to Rathoath. I take a route similar to yourself but stick religiously to the back roads!!

    Gearoid.

    Hi everybody,
I just got my In-Sy bike bag from Germany. I neither read nor speak German, so here is how I managed to do it. Firstly I went to http://www.in-sy.de/main/start.htm and clicked on the “Bestellschein” (Ordering) button at the top of the page. An order form opened up. I clicked on the second item from the top i.e. “In-Sy Universal Rucksack” and filled in “Menge” (number) 1 and the “Gesamt” (price) €55.50 was filled in automatically. I then scrolled to the bottom of the page and filled in the name and address fields and then clicked on the “Bestellen” (Order) button expecting to be taken to a secure site where I could order using my credit card. However a page opened which I could not understand as it was in German, so I just said “f**k it!” and left it at that.

To my total surprise the bag arrived in the post yesterday morning with an invoice for €59.30 to be paid through a bank. I wonder how many Irish companies would be that trusting? The bag and fittings are everything that Gearoid said they would be (the small under-saddle bag was included). Well worth the money.

    Eugene.

P.S. I used the on-line language translation site: http://translation2.paralink.com/ to help with the order form.

Just wondering, what kind of training regime would be needed to undertake a cycle like this? How many times a week would you want to be going out and what kind of distances would you need to be covering? Thanks

A rigourous training regime of five rides a week of 200km+. Everything should be bleeding by saturday night.

I think that you would want to go on a spin every couple of weeks of 60-90km distance to get in shape for a trip like this. If you can cycle for one day like that you can probably cycle for a week.

Going on a bit of a tour if possible would give you a good idea of the logistics, what to bring, etc. Even a weekend out and back would help, long weekend even better. Cycling a given distance every day for a week or more is tougher than doing it for a single day though. I can do 200km easily enough on one day but wouldn't expect to repeat that for a week. Carrying stuff on the bike also makes it harder than on an unladen bike (especially up hills- not necessarily as much harder as you might expect, but certainly harder.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭GearoidP

I reckon if you can do about 50km per week for the next 2 months, bring it up to 100km in May and then try a few 200km weeks before the trip in July, you'd be grand.

One of the guys who cycled from Istanbul to Ireland with us last year had "trained" by cycling 30km the week before we started - his longest cycle ever. But in fairness, he had a good general level of fitness.

By the way, we have a page on mycharity.ie for donations now - be the first to donate!! http://www.mycharity.ie/event/m2m

Anyone interested in a training spin in North Co. Dublin, starting from Santry / Ballymun on Sunday 15th of March, let me know!

    Another question for Gearoid:

I'm interested in doing this trip, but is going from north to south not a recipe for constant headwinds? The prevailing wind comes up from the south west. Thus would it not be better to cycle from Mizen to Malin head?

    Thanks
    Ian

    The Prevailing wind seldom prevails!

    Hi Ian,
I planned a fundraising cycle from Belfast to Dublin last year, but changed my plans when I met somebody from Cork who was doing Mizen to Malin for a Cork charity. I asked him why he would not be going from North to South and finishing in Cork. The answer I got was: "because of the prevailing wind". I thought that made a lot of sense and changed my route accordingly. I cycled from Rosslare Harbour to Howth instead.

The result was that I ended up cycling into a gale of NW wind and lashing rain for the whole day! I arrived in Howth, wet, tired and miserable and with very few people out to greet me! So much for the prevailing wind!

If you check this website: http://www.met.ie/climate/wind.asp you will find that the prevailing wind in Ireland over the last number of years has been mainly from the West.

    Eugene.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,045 ✭✭✭Húrin

Eugene, Met's picture called WIND DIRECTION (percentage frequency of wind direction) demonstrates that the prevailing wind does indeed come from the SW. Much more from there than from the North anyway.

What you had coming up from Rosslare was probably more of a bad luck than a 'going against the grain' experience. On the eastern seaboard it's different anyway. the SW winds would be stronger out west.

    I await Gearoid's answer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭GearoidP

    Hi Ian / Hooreen,

Eugene is a Corkman as it turns out, so I'm glad to see you didn't believe his West Cork form of Blarney about prevailing winds........

I on the other hand am a Kerryman (exiled in Dublin 9) and the possible reasons I could give for doing Malin to Mizen rather than Mizen to Malin are:

    a) headwinds - bring 'em on. The bigger the challenge, the better!
    b) It's a bit of a tradition to finish close to home (South rather than North).
    c) A fair few guys we know from Kerry / Cork want to jump on the bandwagon for the last couple of days and be present for the photo ops at the end. That is only a runner if we finish at Mizen.
    d) I actually don't fully remember why we decided Malin to Mizen rather than the other way round.

The correct answer is probably "all of the above" but as a few people have now booked flights from England etc to join us, accommodation etc., we'll be sticking with Malin to Mizen!!

Are you a "possible" or a "probable" for joining in?

    G.

Those locations are where MET measures the wind. The longer the line, the more often the wind blows from that direction.

    Hi Gearoid,

I emailed info@in-sy.de on 22nd April with the following
    Dear Sir/Madam,

Please forgive me speaking in English but I am emailing from Ireland and do not speak German.
I wish to order a complete backpack solution for my bike but I find it hard to understand your website as I have no German.
    Can I order via email?

You will need to advise me. I will need a backpack, and all the brackets necessary to connect it to my saddle. I am an adult male aged 40 years and I cycle a 61cm frame cycle. If you can generate an order for me and give me a way to pay via credit card or paypal, that would be great.

    My address is

"I included my full address here"

    Many thanks

I got a reply today 12th May that reads as follows
thank you for interesting our in-sy system. Pls be so kind and send your complette adresse and than we can sent t you our flyer. Best regards from lake of Konstanz.

Can anyone spot the flaws here.........
I waited a month for this....Is this for real

To people interested in buying the In-Sy Bag,

It seems the email approach with In-Sy is very slow but as per Blisteredbutt's post number 16 on this thread if you use the order form, there seems to be a very quick delivery time. They send you the stuff with an invoice.

If you want, just let me know what you want to buy and I can make the order for you. It's worth it. I have both the "larger" ruck-sack-style back and also the little box bag. I use the box bag all the time going for even shorter cycles to put my rain jacket etc into - perfect for unpredictable Irish weather!!

If we get enough people who want to buy, I can make a mass order and hopefully like was the case when I did that a few years ago, they gave it to me at half price.

Hi there Happy Grafter. Yes we accept grafters of all dispositions. I suppose the aim is that on completion of the trip, everyone would be delighra and excira. This coming Sat 16th of May, we are taking part in the Mount Leinster Challenge as prep for the Malin to Mizen in July. Anyone interested, let me know and see you on Saturday! http://www.slaneycyclingclub.com/?page_id=33

Hi, we've finalized the route, the only change being that we'll be staying in Kinvarra instead of Gort: www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/M2M. We're booking / have booked hostels in Armagh, Malin, Omagh, Carrick on Shannon and Kinvarra so if you want to be included in any of those bookings, let me know soon! G.

Hi Honkjelly, we've booked hostels in: Malin, Omagh, Carrick on Shannon, Kinvarra & Tralee. The hostel in Bantry is supposed to be a dive so I recommend you to book something youself in Bantry (and Armagh and Derry if you are doing the Dublin to Malin bit). We currently have a confirmed team of 8 (1. Agniezka, 2. Chris, 3. Eugene, 4. Gearoid, 5. Honkjelly, 6. Linda, 7. PJ, 8. Trevor). We made hostel bookings for 10 people so if anyone else wants to be included in our hostel bookings, let us know!

Oh and yes, there is still room on the bus back to Dublin. Depending on numbers, we might only hire the bus to bring us back to Cork in time for the trains (one an hour on the half hour) to Dublin - they take up to 6 bikes per train.

Hi Donal, unfortunately a few people seem to be having trouble getting deliveries of the bags from In-Sy. A guy I know got is (German speaking) mum to call them at 00 49 7541 43280 and they explained that they had been on holidays but will be delivering soon. It seems they are a very, very small outfit. Best bet if you can get someone German speaking to give them a call. And no, unfortunately it seems they do not send out a confirmation email when you make an order online at www.in-sy.de.

Hi Huirin, Great stuff! That makes 9 "definites" for the whole trip, and room for just 1 more person before we need to start ringing the youth hostels to increase our booking number. I live in Santry and work in Swords. Am cycling from Swords to Portlaoise tomorrow Friday, leaving Swords about 3pm if you are around. Otherwise, I often take a spin from swords via Ballyboughal, Oldtown, St Margarets to Santry on my way home on the evenings. Let me know if you want to go for a spin in North County Dublin any evening except Mondays. What part of Dublin do you live in?

I live in Rathmines. I'm busy this weekend so I can't come to Portlaoise but I would be up for a spin on tuesday evening.

Am meeting Huirin tonight at 7pm outside the AIB in Swords main street, if anyone else is interested in meeting up. We plan to do a loop around Ballyboughal, Garristown and back to St. Margarets & Ballymun.

Had a great training run at the weekend from Cork to Cashel over the famous "Vee" in the Knockmealdown mountains. More Rhododendrons than you could shake a stick at!

    Hi Gearoid,
Just checked out this board a few minutes ago and realised that I had missed out on a good cycle this evening.
If you are going on one of these cycles again in the near future just let me know and I could meet you in Swords or wherever else was convenient.

    Eugene.

    Hi Eugene,

Yes, Huirin (aka Ian) and I started out from Swords at 7pm-ish, went North along the "Sli na Sceacha" road (parallel to the M1) as far as "bog of the ring" area (I don't make up the names of these places). It was a gentle but steady climb but in fairness a great view of Dublin from there. Eventually dragged ourselves away from a chat with a farmer (price of cabbage [I'm not joking] paid by Tesco: apparently the farmer only gets 33c for the 1.20 euro cabbage you buy in Tesco, and whether the Dubs will win the all Ireland). We then went west to Garristown, and back South via the R130 & R122 to St Margarets and home. Great spin. We'll probably be doing a variant of that - or possibly Howth head or a couple of laps of the Phoenix Park on each Tuesday evening between now and the trip in Mid July, so watch this space and keep your Tuesday evenings free!

Yeah I had a blistering warm up going at full whack from Rathmines to Swords for fear of being late.

We'll probably make it a regular on tuesday evenings. Must also take a day some weekend to go to Wicklow to train for the many hills out west. Are you a northsider too Eugene?

    Hi Ian,
I come originally from Whitegate in Co. Cork but have lived in Howth for nearly 40 years (a lot longer than I have lived in Cork). Am I a Northsider or a Southsider? Take your pick :-) I wear a Dublin tracksuit!
Hope to see you some Tuesday evening soon.

Eugene, Ian (and anyone who's interested), how does meeting in Swords at 7pm next Tuesday sound? I'd be on for Lusk - Rush - Skerries - Balrothery - Naul and then back to Dublin via Ballyboughal.

Also: Have booked the hostel in Armagh for 11th July. That was the last hostel we had to book. So, we're sorted for hostels every night except the Derry and Bantry nights.

    Hi Gearoid,
That sounds fine. Will meet you all in Swords on Tuesday. I got a lift (with the bike) to Balbriggan this evening and did Balbriggan/Naul/Garristown and on to the N2 six Kilometers north of Ashbourne. Avoided Ashbourne by taking a detour to Ratoath and then on to Kilbride and home by St. Margaret's and Kinsealy. Great cycle. (39 miles).
P.S. I just sent you an e-mail with some info. re. accommodation in Derry.
