Think it looks interesting... although not the Torchwood I'm used to. It looks like it will be a much tighter and well put together series which is good. On the bad side, I'm worried about losing some of the utter insanity that defined the first two seasons. I've always loved the 'and the kitchen sink' feel of the show.

I dunno, I like the idea of a nice tight arch.

Someone hunting down torchwood? could work.

    Looks very X-Files. Awesome.

0:33 Is it just me or does he say 'Get to The Doctor'?

No "kitchen sink" mentality, but by the looks of it, we at least have Gwen jumping out of an ambulance, guns akimbo. So at least some of the pottiness remains :D

When did we go from hating Torchwood for being childish to loving it for being mental?

I'm just trying to keep score :D

Now now, I never said I loved it, just pointing out that it still seems to have some of it's ... cavalier attitude to reason :p I stil think the show is a load of old guff (though admittedly it vastly improved in series 2) & a wasted opportunity of the Who franchise.

If the third uses the arch to tightly control the plot, I reckon it could actually be... good! I do like the characters, they're just not used well mostly.

Flawed though it was, I actually enjoyed the first series. Haven't seen series two yet, but I've heard it's better.

I'd be in this camp and yes the second one was better, althoug barrowman really needs to rein the drama llama

Or get acting lessons. He was my biggest problem with the show, too.

I think it's 'get it done'.

John Barrowman isn't an actor, that's the problem (ok, he is, but he isn't really) & is a one trick pony from series 1 that should have stayed in war-torn London.

Now that I listen again, you're probably right. Wishful thinking on my part, I guess.

I thought season 2 was at its best when they slowed things down and focused on developing some of the main characters, in particular Tosh and Owen.

My biggest worry for the miniseries is that while RTD can be very good at writing slower paced character drama, he fails miserably at "epic" despite thinking he's God's gift. It looks like he'll be going for the latter in the miniseries.

Do we know how many episodes there are going to be and when it begins on BBC? (Well, obviousely I don't, but do any of you?)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

5 episodes, one for every weekday!

Sometime in June or July, apparently.

Barrowman's good when he has a director who can reign him in and remind him that he's not on stage. He's also good when opposite the 'quieter' ones, like Ianto or Owen. Opposite Gwen, they tend to try and out-gesture each other. And that forced sexual tension the show tries to cultivate between them does them no favours.

S3 is going to be directed by just one guy, Euros Lyn. So hopefully, he'll have kept Barrowman consistent across the series. Because when he's good, he is very good. It's just when he's bad, he's... horrid.

He's basically the Horatio Caine of Cardiff

Sadly without the amazing one-liners :(

Eh. I doubt they'd give something that big away in a trailer anyhow.

Much as I sort-of enjoyed the series, I really, really can't stand John Barrowman as an actor...

Looks like a much darker show. I could live without the kitchken sink aspect of the first two seasons. looks promising alround.

I always took it that his style was intentional - on his part and the directors. Personally I have to say I enjoyed how he has played the part. Did feel though that season 2 was not as tight as season 1.

Barowman is good at happy jack, but when he is required to deliver anything of real gravitas it generally falls flat.

I also find the 'look, sexual tension everybody!' aspect of the jack/gwen relationship to not work at all.

However this looks interesting. We will see.

Latest release date according to BBC America (who believe that they will be airing the series on the same week as BBC One in the UK) is July according to promo stings they have on their channel. Meanwhile there are to be three radio plays set immediately prior to 'Children of Earth' on BBC Radio 4 some time in June.

    This too shall pass.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,645 ✭✭✭Daemos

This is airing on July 20th in America, so it should be around then here as well if the rumours about simultaneous airing here and there is true.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,645 ✭✭✭Daemos

OK, it's finally been confirmed by the BBC. This will air sometime between July 4th and 10th (more than likely Monday - Friday)

It could be it for Torchwood for good. RTD has said that a series 4 is "ready to go" (start filming) but will depend on the ratings for season 3.

Mini review in the Guardian Guide. (I spoilered the last sentence as I think it gives a tiny bit away.)
The third run of Torchwood finds it stripped nightly across a week in primetime, none too shabby for a series that started out as a Doctor Who spin-off on BBC3. So does the transition work? Leaving aside lingering doubts of the whole idea of being asked to commit to a single story for five hours, yes. This is smart, funny sometimes vicseral SF entertainment that motors along, even if the premise, children eerily possessed by aliens inevitably calls to mind The Midwich Cuckoos.
The idea of Britain as a rogue state is a neat concept too.

Don't see this working from a ratings point of view, it'll start strongly enough but the Beeb will be praying for rainy evenings by Wednesday I suspect. Taking a "marginal" spin off concept and then whacking it across the main channel at prime time for a week has dissapointment written all over it regardless of its quality.

I'm a fan of the show but I'm not going to re-arrange my life next week to be at my TV for each night. I'm pretty sure many others will follow this example - some will catch up on the BBC's iPlayer, some on repeats but others will just give up or download and the ratings will drop and the show may then be dropped. I don't like this possibility.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,085 ✭✭✭✭Stark

    Ditto here.

BBC isn't ratings driven in the same way as commercial stations. It has a public service remit and has to make a variety of different types of shows. It doesn't matter if 2 people or 20 million people watch the show this week, the BBC won't profit from it. There are no advertisers to care about how we watch it. The BBC do calculate ratings from iPlayer viewings, whether they are streamed, downloaded or watched on Virgin onDemand. Very few people in the UK will download from any other source when the iPlayer exists. And it's only UK watchers that count as far as the public service remit is concerned.

Where they do make money is from sales of DVDs and merchandise which will remain the same no matter how people watch the show. And from selling the show to channels like Watch in the UK and it's BBC Worldwide distribution. Torchwood is one of the most popular shows on BBC America where this series will air two weeks after here and the boxset will be released in the US on 28th.

By making a week long event of the show, they are creating a bigger buzz around it than they ever did with the first two series. And putting it in the prime time slot on BBC1 is actually a massive vote of confidence in the series. I can't quite describe how big a deal that is here, it's considered a big promotion for the series.

I don't mind admitting, I won't be watching this show as it airs on the BBC (besides, we are in Ireland after all, our viewership doesn't count in ratings :p) & will just pick it up via the great evil that is torrents. The weather is expected to change next week so you could find a large enough audience tuning in. The first / second episodes will be key in hooking people mind you.

I have never been fully for or against Torchwood; while season 2 was a VAST improvement on the dreadfully adolescent season 1, it still had some ropey & patchy episodes. I see potential in an adult, Dr. Who themed show, I'm just not sure that Torchwood is it. Children of the Earth does look promising from the trailers though.

    From wiki;
Having been set up to do so by the conclusion of their storylines in "Journey's End", Freema Agyeman and Noel Clarke were due to reprise their roles as Martha Jones and Mickey Smith respectively, but were unable to due to "scheduling issues"

Hooray! Agyeman is a brutal actor and Mickey is just not that interesting. Now I'm really looking forward to this.

In fariness, if they intend furthering the show, they'll have to bolster up the staff in Torchwood a little. Even before the end of series 2 it was a bit hard to swallow that this well-funded group of people could basically swan about as they please with apparently more authority than MI5 or the like.

Oh and leave Freema alone, she wasn't hired for her acting qualities ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

    How gay was that? :p

Russell T Davis cant actually write this stuff any longer he just has a software programme randomly pick previous themes, charcater types and lines of dialogue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,085 ✭✭✭✭Stark

You work so hard to convince the breeders that there is no homosexual agenda and then that airs on Primetime television.

I only tuned in for bits of it but the bits I saw seemed like such a hack job that I couldn't remain interested. Might get round to downloading it at some stage...
