Is the EMT course a long course? I have heard 9 months to complete including the hands on stuff. Would you have to give up your day job in order to do the course?

The course is four weeks in collage. after the four weeks you do 5days in hospital and on an ambulance, then you have to sit a mcq exam and a practical exam which takes 2 days. when you have this done you will find out if you have been successful, if so you will get a pin number and will be an emt-b.I think you were getting this mixed up with emt-i/ paramedic.
    Hope this helps:)

Does anybody know the likelihood of finding employment as a newly qualified EMT? All the privates advertise on their websites that they are currently seeking EMTs/Paramedics but I find that strange with all the people doing the EMT course nowadays. I have a full C licence but no D at the moment, would that make life harder?

Also does anybody know if an EMT can apply directly to the HSE for employment (even for PTS work) or must you wait til they advertise for trainee paramedics?

    Cheers

There are about 188 EMTs in the state, last time I checked. Although IATI put another 20 through exams last week, cant comment on pass rate at moment.
Alot of these are already working for privates as drivers and now want to progress. A greater amount of the people doing it for personal development with no intention to use it was a career. Just a knid of an add on.

No most privates will except you with C1 and train you to D1. As for HSE employment at the moment no. Although they are revising PTS and a recommendation is in for EMT-Bs to be employed for it. But as it stands its Paramedic or into the recruitment process.

You doing the CD course at the moment??

It's getting harder to get jobs with the privates. I did work experience with one company this year and although they are busy, they have literal mountain of CVs with EMTs and Paramedics all over Europe looking for work. With the IATI and the voluntaries now doing EMT courses it is going to be a lot harder to get work with them. I know of at least 30-50 extra EMTs graduating this summer in Dublin (me included!) and that's not including the Galway course. Many of them will be looking for work in the private sector. Though if you have a C1, D1 and Paramedic licence you have a much better chance of employment.

EDIT: You can't apply directly to the HSE, you'll have to wait until the next recruitment phase. But having the EMT will be a tick in your favour. Another option is going abroad, doing a recognised Paramedic course and returning here with it. The HSE sometimes recruit for paramedics directly instead of trainees.

There is NO recognised Paramedic course outside of Ireland. At PHECC applications are reviewed and your qualifications and work experience are reviewed. You will be accepted and acredited only if you meet the Training and educational standards 100%. If you come close to the level PHECC may allow you to sit the exams, including the OCSE.
Each case is evaluated by the awards council and a decision is then made.

No unfortunately didn't get a place, going with the IATI which is a killer because i'm going to have to pay for digs in Galway for the duration.

hey sgthighway rang them as you said to. they told me they have 2 courses coming up in Dublin soon. one is starting in the next week or so. cant get a month off work to do the course and the part time courses they have are full.

Next week? I'm doing the EMT course next week in Dublin with IATI but that is in conjunction with a college. I wasn't aware they are brining in outside people. Unless there are two courses?

Did they say where it was taking place?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88 ✭✭Bruce11

not on the course next week, they say they will book me onto the following course

I'm booked for september but I was never told anything about Dublin courses. What do yiz reckon the odds are of them letting me change it, seeing as I have my deposit paid?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88 ✭✭Bruce11

I would have thought they'd have the good sense to let me know this in the mean time, i'm after being on to them a few times about other things as well as trying to organise accommodation in Galway like a tool. In saying that if I got a place on a Dublin course all would be forgiven

Word of advice if your starting the september course, learn the drugs, learn the drugs, learn the drugs and finally learn the drugs!

You'l get tested on them every single morning,so may aswell start on them now!Other than that its an mcq everyday covering the previous day's topics,it's worthwhile throwing an eye over some A+P books if you have some,it should make it abit easier for you.
