Need heavy dumbbells

    Folks,

I'm in search of heavy dumbbells. I've hit the wall in the local gym (e.g. benching 2 x 50kgs, 50kg dumbbell bent-over row, etc.) and need to move up. I have a small home-gym in the shed which I've decided to expand from what's already there (bench, olympic barbell).

I've checked around online but most sets seem to be from a pissy ~2kgs to about 40kgs.

Ideally i'd be buying just dumbbells that are 30kgs+, with some going well over 50kgs if possible. Is there anywhere in Dublin or even the country that I could go and get bargaining??

    cheers.

A quick check of the website shows they can go up to 50kg. But ask and see what you can sort out.

Dublin based and a lot posters recommend the place, I do anyway :)

    cheers gents,
I wouldnt know much about the prices here - but if the weight doesnt break my back the price sure will  hehe
I'll have to get onto them.

Also, if anyone knows any gym/individual that might be getting rid of some used heavy dumbbells then I'm all ears :pac:

i use dumbell handles from argos, theyre short but i can fit 60kg on them

    3x10kg discs on each side

irishlifting has dumbell handles which are more expensive but longer so theretically u could put mmuch more weight on them

ud need to be a strong kunt to lift them though

hanleys right about the 5kg plates if you try to throw tens on the argos handles your range of motion goes out the window and you're goin to destroy your wrists.... saying that i did use them for a good while but they are not even slightly comforable to lift with

You are correct there! But you know how it is during a session, you don't want to spend time footering around with plates and spindle locks when your body is shuddering from a set :D also when dropping the metal with rubber coating dumbbells to the floor they dont make much noise, but the handle with plates makes a serious racket! not that it should put anyone off :)

well its possible to put 2 5kg plates on the insides and put the larger pllates on the outside

this ensures your wrist will not come into contact wit any of the plates although it depends what exercises ur doing with them anyway

if ur benching ul have no problems using tens

curling is better with 5s or at least 5s on he inside closest to your wrist

On the subject of loading a dumbbell bar with 5/10kg plates, i have a question about getting in position for some exercises. when i use the 50kg dumbbells in the gym for benching the ends are smooth so that i can lift each of them onto my knees/thighs, then I lay back onto the bench and push them over my chest.
if i were using the short bar, the end would be sticking out thus making my thighs impossible to use as a start to the exercise.

how do you get in position? do you have someone helping you, or a special bench?

the thing with the tens from argos is that they are wide enough to balance half of each on the outside of your thighs when setting up. Failing on to your chest hurts like fcuk tho!!

Olympic Dumbell handles with normal Olympic plates no?

Edit: I see that's been said already!

If your going to make up heavy DB's using separate plates I'd strongly recommend (for safety) welding the plates and make fixed weight sets.

i usually just tighten the spinlocks for every set, aint hhad a problem yet

i use the same discs for other barbell and tricep and easycurl bar so if i welded them id need more discs(which are a rip off these days since argos have almost doubled their prices)

i used to buy discs for 21.99 fro 20kg
its not almost 40.00 for 20kg IN A RECESSION

    Come on argos,stop raping us!

Yeah the 10s are too big for me too. For doing shrugs I used to load up a tricep bar, it lowers the centre of gravity too. You hold the smooth part in the middle and it drops down naturally.

I tighten up the spinlocks by twisting the actual discs themselves once the spinlock is tight. The bigger the diameter the more you can tighten them.

The argos 5kgs are the biggest I use, you can fit 6x5kg on them, and the bar is about 1.5kg too.

Some guys have made their own handles with pipe and hose clamps
