yes they are but they are mainly used to connect to tv's hence the higher prices.

if you don't need to connect it to a tv, get one of these:

I had trouble with my western digital. Just stopped reading the disk and lost the data on it

Tho in fairness I paid €150 for 500gb bout 2 years ago. Great price and maybe the 1TB doesn't have that problem.

    Can't beat seagate imho

Drives can fail for numerous of reasons. that slight knock it got (not saying your's did get a knock just an example) a month ago may not cause the drive to fail that instant but down the line could cause problems. if your just stopped reading the disks, you didn't just lose the data, it's still there. there are companies that specialise in data recovery but cost a fair bit of money themselves and would only be worth it if vital information was stored on the disk.

Western Digital are a great brand of hard drive and there would be very little to separate them from the like of say Seagate and Samsung.

again, it's wasting money if he doesn't need the media functions, also no way to tell what drive is in there.

Thanks all for the replys and suggestions.

For the extra functionality I'd probably go for the multimedia harddrive. Watch movies on a big screen rather than the laptop and having a back up for the laptop harddrive.

~€200 for a 1TB media drive means you are effectively paying about €100 for the media function.

If you really want the media functionality, for that kind of money, I would just buy a separate drive (~€95 for a 1TB) and a WD HD Media Player (~€99 on komplett). Its a much better media player than any of those listed; better file support and processing power (for full-HD etc).

    http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=104387 ... about €130.

on the same site a player that RECORDS can be bought for less than €200.

Well, €135 actually, and closer to €140 with your CC exchange rate.

Which is fair enough, its plenty cheaper than the ones linked originally by the OP, but still €40 or €50 more than a standalone 1TB HDD.

So, your paying €40-50 for a basic media player with (fairly) limited file support, SD resolution, and a pretty slow interface. Not to mention, its got no USB host, so when the HDD dies (and it will), the only way you can use it is with the 4-in-1 card reader.

And thats grand, its not a lot of money and the OP may decide its worth it.

I think i'd still go for a separate 1TB HDD and a WD Media Player. Its €50 more but its the (much) better option imo. When the HDD dies you've still got a good media player, and its very future-proofed with the HDMI, HD-capability and file support.
