I see that sky have reduced their price for sky HD to €49 , my questions are, do you need a Hd tv and what is the extra cost of subscribing to sky for hd. Will the hd box not work as an ordinary plus box without a hd tv.

But I dont think they will give you the box for that price if you not going to take a HD sub.

    Could be wrong on this.

most hd channels are sports and movies too which is extra subscription.
I have HD FTA and one thing which is cool is for films etc, if you have digital optical going to a surround sound system, it comes in 5.1!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭von Smallhausen

If you dont go for the HD channels they will charge you €599 which is a nasty price for a HD box.

I don't have Movies or Sports pack, so if I went for this do I still pay the full €14.75 ?

it's sky, of course you do.

sky HD is not worth the extra 14.75 and until the fee is waved i shall not subscribe.

does anyone have a list of the HD channels that are currently available on sky?
I take it that bbc hd and channel 4 hd can be tuned in via Other Channels?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 48 brenny2506

Does that offer not say £49 or €49, Irish price is still €74.50!!

    or am I missing something

    not ch4 HD .

the only hd channels available are BBCHD and LuxeHD (if you don't subscribe to HD and dont have a uk card)

    Clear as mud!

Is there any point in having a HD box (and paying more for the privilege) if you don't have a HD TV ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭von Smallhausen

Would be best advised to have a HD ready tv to get the HD channels as quality would not be the same.

It's €49 for new and existing customers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭corcadorcha

I think its for existing customers only!!!!!:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭von Smallhausen

The €49 is for existing customers who want to upgrade to HD and must sign up for the HD channels for 12 months...New customers still charged at €74.50

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

we just upgraded here aswell just now.
1-2 weeks delivery time. which coincides with the 1-2 weeks delivery for the new hd tv !

Looks a good deal, no mention of having both boxes hooked up to a phone line, any chance they've dropped that crap??

Not a chance, Sky need the phoneline thing to make sure both boxes are attached to the same phone line so that you can't take a €15 subscription box to Johnny-down-the-road.... :)

Didnt think so, unreal they treat customers that way, they just assume everyone is a criminal and is going to scam boxes and give them to other people. Guess i may get a stupid phone line installed that ill never make a call on.

Well, it also means ordering Sky Box Office events is very easy, which in turn makes more money for Sky.

Some Interactive stuff is payable too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

    Yeah i guess so.

Ive just had a new brainwave, not sure if its doable though.

Can i get the HD box installed and pay a full sub with all channels so like 90 a month or whatever, and also keep my existing box but dont have it as multi room, just make it a basic 30.50 a month with no sports or movies. If so then this could be done with no phone line, yes..??!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,677 ✭✭✭staker

    that's €120 a month md:eek:
    recession and all that..
but yeah it has been done!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Ha yeah it is a bit steep to watch TV every month, and paying 7.50 a month for multiroom plus 25 a month for a phoneline would be roughly the same amount and the second box would have all the channels which would obviously be better, damn sky to hell, i need me a phoneline i guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭eamon234

I've cancelled my existing multiroom subscription (was going to anyway) so will wait a few days and see if I can get the free installation and half price multiroom sub - worth a try! They didn't try and offer me anything when I cancelled.

My aunt ordered the HD on friday and was quoted €49 for new customer price
+ €75 cheque for her and me on the refer a friend

What do we think of skys new sky+hd offer 49e + 50e installation fee. One of thier better deals considering this was costing well over 150e before xmas. Package costs extra 15e per month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,375 ✭✭✭kmick

You dont get much for that 15 euro unless you have the sports/movies. if you do have the sports/movies all of a sudden its staring to get real expensive for TV. Jury is still out for me. I like watching movies in HD but for an extra 50/month it would cost me to get the movies and a HD sub its not worth it. Now If they threw in one of the HD movie channels to the sub Id be in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

If they removed the HD sub then it would be value for money.

Exactly. I'd jump at it then.

Or even if they did it like the old Sky+ sub where they dropped it if you were subscribed to movies or sports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭charlie1966

They dropped the Sky+ sub around the time HD was made available. Maybe they will drop the HD sub when 3D becomes available, but more likely they will drop the sub when it makes better financial sense for them to do so. Ie snare more customers into their service.

They dropped the Sky+ sub around the time HD was made available.

The sky+ sub was ridiculous anyway. How did the sky plus features cost sky any more on a continuous basis?? Surely, all of the sky+ features were in the box?? To be fair, HD broadcasting would cost sky something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Redisle

Does anyone know if it's possible to order the HD box and pay the HD sub for a year then cancel the HD sub and continue to use the box as a sky+ box?

Taking Watty's advice about the real cost of Sky offers, this package breaks down as:

    Box + installation €100
    Minimum package €20.50 x12 = €246
    HD charge €14.75 x12 = €177

Coming to a total of €523. And the PVR function of the box stops working if you end your subscription.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭eamon234

Hmm...2 days later and my multiroom is still working hope they're not ending the offer soon...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭von Smallhausen
