    Toffee.

Caramel is soft and gooey, toffee is harder and chewy.

    Taste like siht anyway..

Just glad you only see them at the end of selection boxes at Christmas

On a molecular level toffee is a short chain thus making it brittle (at standard room temprature) while caramel has a longer chain due to it being made at a lower temprature resulting in it's 'bendability'. So a curley wurley is chocolate on caramel.

    Whispa FTW.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

So if it's toffee, and you dip it in your cup of tea until it's soft and gooey, does it then become caramel?

Caramel can be any consistancy. Both toffee and caramel are sugar based, but caramel will be heated to a much lower temperature than toffee.

I'm afraid this is a case of "exactly what it says on the tin".

Well Ice can become Water and then Steam correct (via heating in all cases) so I guess it makes sense that caramel is toffee in some other unsolidified state.

I've never been able to get my head around th scientific elements of a curly wurly.

Tbh, I think the stuff in chomps is the very limit of what could be considered caramel.
I think the stuff in curly wurlys is just slightly passed that ie. it ventures into the toffee catagory.

It would be like Wispa's. They took them away quietly and there were demands to bring them back so they brought them back with a fanfare and now they can shift them.

However, Curly Wurlys are in a different league altogether. I usually eyeball them when I was getting a dessert for my sandwhich(thats right a dessert) but the Star bar always one in the end.

Its kind of like somebody had sh*t after eating a lot of peanuts, dont you think? :D

I might get a curly wurly later on the way home but I will feel like I always do, robbed because there are bits missing in the middle.

    False economy.

I don't think Wispa Gold has been mentioned. You got the wonderful combination of a Wispa bar with caramel and none of the confusion associated with Curly Wurlys. Pure genius.

    Hopefully they'll make a return.Hopefully.

It matters not, the mighty Curly-Wurly needs not to be defined and confined by "accurate" sweet terminology, as the nomenclature would not do the esteemed bar justice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭Ann22

Well the stuff inside Curly Wurlys (or is it Curly Curlies?) doesn't really taste like what Toffos are made of (are they still about?) or the toffee pennies you get in Quality Street but why if it is caramel, is it stiff? Whereas the caramel you get in Cadbury's Caramel and the little caramel kegs you get in Milk Tray are all runny and gooey. Pure mystery:confused:. Good question op:).

    on WikiPedia

Curly Wurly is a type of chocolate bar manufactured by Cadbury and sold in the UK, Australia and Germany. It was launched in the UK in 1971 and relaunched in 1976. Its shape resembles two flattened, intertwined serpentine strings. The bar is made of chocolate-coated caramel. Also available are "Curly Wurly Squirlies," which come in a bag and are just the cross beams of the ladder. this design was created by Charlie Simmonds as an apprentice at Cadbury's.

I believe they have got smaller. Weren't they roughly the size of rulers years ago? Like Wagon Wheels, they were like the size of those plates between saucers and dinner plates:).

Second last bar of the selection box - a Chomp to go.

It says Caramel Centre, I'll go with that :D
