    Malta ?

Not Malta either, but getting warmer, although the country that this island is part of has been part of the EU for longer than Malta.

Not Corsica or Sardinia - bit further east. The zoo character probably wasn't as famous as Attenborough. He had a brother who was also an author.

This really isn't a hint, but the mention in the book of the building in the photograph has something to with kissing the feet of a dead person - and that's not as weird as it sounds, honestly :)

Not Cyprus, but we really are getting closer. The island is part of a larger country that isn't an island.

Yes, a Greek island, but somebody has to say which one (and ideally, the name of the town on that island) before I'll declare this one answered...

Corfu! I declare you to be next - over to you!

(it was the church of St Spiridon in Kerkyra, the main town in Corfu)

    There are 227 Greek islands!

    [EDIT]
    I'm guessing Aegina
    failing that

    Skiathos, Skopelos, Skyros or Alonissos
    :)

Agreed, but most of them are tiny - it might've been a bit unfair to post a picture from one of the really small ones - Corfu is one of the three or four larger islands.

The author is Gerald Durrell - he spent some years as a child living in Corfu, and in later years was involved in several zoos, including one in Jersey that's named after him. The book that covers his childhood in Corfu is called 'My Family And Other Animals'

The feet bit is related to the (alleged) remains of St Spiridon in that church - and there's some kind of festival every year (presumably on that saint's day, I'm not sure) where people queue up to pay their respects to the remains of the saint - and the feet are accessible - you're supposed to kiss the feet to pay your respects. It's all wrapped up in clothing and the feet are in some kind of slippers, so you can't really tell if there's an actual body inside there or not.
