Just in case you're not aware, there are some specialist firms that rent adapted cars. Check out the ads in the IWA Spokeout magazine.

Why would you go after car hire companys when you can hire an adapted car from other companies ?

I crashed my car and needed a temp replacment, This was sept 2006 and back then nobody had a car with hand controls, it was only when i started my action that motobility ireland became involved, may be my case made someone wake up !!!!

I tried hiring one from Hertz, their website said they had vehicles with hand controls but there was no vehicle available at the location I wanted.

I then went to Motability in Ashbourne and hired one without any difficulty.

i have had 2 vehicles adapted by Motability. Unlike Shifty, i haven't rented from them before, but as a company i would highly recommend them.

    Hi,

I am looking to hire a car with hand controls but again cannot get one at ease. Most of the car hire companies do not have a car available. My 07 Kia broke down on Wednesday.Kia or the garage I deal with cannot give me a replacement car thats will suit my needs (with hand controls) also I am covered under the Kia warrentee but what use is it if they cannot meet my needs.
Kia have offered me €30 a day for 7 days but I have to arrange the car but like you I cannot seem to get a car. So if any one has the same problem please reply and let me know how your action goes

    regards
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

For prices etc you should contact a company like Motability.

There are a couple of other providers out there too. If you're looking for a full list, maybe give the IWA a call

    Hi

is motability still the best place to get car hand controls ?

From the enquiries I made, Hertz & Budget provide hand controls but need a few days notice 'cos they have to get conrols fixed by a company that specialises doing this for insurance reasons, which is fair enough I suppose
