Ok... Il describe my situation at the moment

    1. Im a student, cant afford much food, well the expensive stuff
    2. Theres a gym 5 minutes walk away from me, can't afford the membership and public sessions are at 8:30 at night which isn't really convenient for me.
    3. I go out a minimum of 2 nights a week.
    4. Ive been hovering around the 13-14 stone mark for the past 2 years, Im 18 and short enough.

Can anyone recommend a good diet (thats bloody cheap, also bear in mind I don't like salad) and some exercises to do because Im sick of being in the state I'm in.

Any help at all is very much appreciated.

    What height are you?

Stop with the can't and the don't like and get your ass out the door minimum 3 times a week - running/walking and cut out junk food 95% of the time. Eat well and exercise, building up a good sweat. You will see results fast. No need for gyms if you can't afford it. Everything you need is there for free.

    5'' 7 / 8 I think?

Id love to jog but my fitness is absolutely gone, I cant run about 2/10 of a mile without dying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,287 ✭✭✭davyjose

Then run 2/10 of a mile, walk 2/10 of a mile, run 2/10 of a mile, until you've done a few miles. Move this to 3/10 and so on the week after.

Nobody said getting fit, from a standing start was easy, but it won't take long to find a fair level of fitness.

Ok with someone with ur attitude the only solution cud be to just cut down on the portions of the food your eating(lowers Caloric intake) and start exercising( Begin with walking( walk fast for 30 seconds every now and then) Then progress to running-use a park/pitch near you!
If you sort your diet properly then you will double your weight loss but you dont sound too serious! Also beer is full of Calories so try and cut it to one nght! Start with that give yourself 6 months to see results! You might need alot longer if your diets not sorted tho-Good luck!

List what you're eating on an average day and exactly what exercise you take.

Do bodyweight exercises at home. One leg squats, push ups, lunges, dips, chins etc. Cut out the crap in your diet, sugar, bad fatty foods, simple carbs etc.

I agree with what has been said, you can get a great workout from bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges, pushups, pullups, running/ jogging outside is free!

Foodwise tuna, eggs, milk, bread, wholemeal pasta, tinned tomatoes, cottage cheese, lentils, vegetable are all relatively cheap.

Try this program to get yourself running:
    http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
Couch to 5 k program. I think some people here have done it.

Cut out fast food and snacks. No more crisps or bars. That alone will make a big difference.

    Are you male or female?

    +1 all the way!

try the C25K programme here http://www.c25k.com/ I found it best (in terms of results and not getting injured) when I was finally able to start running after breaking my ankle & 2 years of rehab and now have no problem running 10k.

You need to cut down on your beer and your calorie intake, defo post up a diet sheet and let people pick holes in it. Salad isn't the be all & end all, it does help though...

I've done Couch to 5k, and I can vouch for it. I was pretty overweight when I started it too (just under 15 stone) and was able to get through it fine, and I've been running for just over 6 months now. Have lost 3 stone since then too \o/

Quick update, just bought a bike yesterday in the hope that it might help, did cut down slightly on the junk, bought Pasta, Sauce, and meat for the whole of the next week, so that might help, did a 30 minute bike ride today, for some reason I find that easier than running.

Oh yeah, and I'm male for the poster who asked.

Throw a load of veggies in with your pasta. If you buy them loose instead of pre-packed they work out cheap enough, and help fill you up.

Also check what's in the sauce you bought, a lot of ready-made sauces are full of sugar and fat. You're better off buying aload of tinned tomatoes and some herbs and spices, garlic, onions than using the jars of sauce. It often tastes better too!

Good move on getting the bike! Any exercise you can get will help so don't be tempted to just not bother.

Remember losing weight is the simple process of using up less calories than you take in and not nearly as complicated as everyone seems to think. Have a look at the Nutrition & Diet forum under Food & Drink, there's a lot of people on there trying to lose a few pounds and some great advice on nutrition.

    Good luck!

You should read Lance Armstrongs book, "it's not about the bike" if you need some inspiration, epic stuff! I find cycling much more enjoyable than running as well. Haven't gone for a cycle in ages though, maybe this weekend...

Look for a route with some hills, the reward in flying down the otherside is deadly.
I cycled a good bit during the summer. Used to do a route, took about an hour, and then tried to improve my time each time. I had one of those kellogs cyclometer things.
    Best of luck with it.

    Another update:

Weighed myself for the first time in years... 14st 2 and if im honest im a bit disappointed Im the weight I am but not surprised.

With lectures this week Ive done about an hours cycling (up and down hill thanks to the poster above for suggesting it) and so much walking you wouldnt believe, not much of running though, think I'm going to stick to cycling until I get some level of fitness up.

Took the advice about making your own sauces rather than using the stir-ins which is very helpful, just need to get the beer sorted, did 3 nights out this week (why, I don't know) and from next week it's going down to one quality night.

Anyway, Im going to weigh myself next week and see what the craic is then, thanks for all the help!

you said that you go out at least twice a week, right?

Lets say you go mad altogether and dont get the 8 pack of bavaria one of the nights, or dont have the last two shots or the yagerbomb! take your pick.

You now have a tenner a week x 52 = 520 yoyos or in other words..... gym membership!

If you're serious about this it's very doable. I was 16 stone starting college this year and by christmas I was 12. I'm now 12 and a half but Its muscle I've put on since I started doing more weights in December.

I also understand how horrible it is being that unfit I couldn't run literally for 2 minutes before sweating uncontrolably :(. I have to say though that I completly overhalled my diet and it's made more changes than the excersise. I used to easily average 2 or 3 takeaways per day in a week now I have 1 on a Saturday night and thats it.

I now have a breakfast of either 2(I used to take a third with me incase it didn't fill me but I've never had that problem) Special K bars,A bowl of oatibix(made by wheatibix but I just prefer the oats:confused:) or Two poached eggs or scrambled eggs with toast(Brown bread). I'd also have a glass of orange juice.

My lunch was either a brown bread sandwich with turkey and lettuce or a wrap with chicken and lettuce. I would also have either an apple or banana depending on my mood and a bottle of water.

If I got hungry during the dayI'd have a natural yoghurt or another piece of fruit.

Also I tear through bottles of water during the day I'd say I have atleast 4 litres but think I just get thirsty very easy.

Then for dinner I would have pasta and chicken,Potatoes steak and maw-ng twos(spelt phonetically as I've no idea of the correct spelling) or Brown rice lamb cutlets and baby corn. These wern't set dinners you can mix and match or add in your own vegetables. Also I've recently started mixing parsley in with my mashed potatoes for a bit of a change.

I only had my first one yesterday to try but I think its knorr quick lunches seem a good option. My girlfriend lives off them for her lunch now. I tryed the curry rice one yesterday which was delicious very filling and it's only 92 calories. They're also quite cheap but don't know the exact price.

On your nights out I used to be the same now I have one night out a week max and I drink coors light now. Less calories and no manly alternative like with bud light to make you look bad haha.

Also on getting fit I started with playing football and nothing else. If your in college there'll usually always be a game going on somewhere at lunch or during a free class you can join into. The great thing is you can take a breather and walk around when your tired until your ready to run again and getting in about 3 hours football a week made a huge difference with me. On days I didn't have time to play football I tryed to get in atleast a half hour walk although preferably around a full hour.

I allowed myself one takeaway per week on a Saturday night and I have a big dirty rasher and sausage sandwich for my breakfast on a Sunday. Dropping the take away most weeks or the sandwich doesn't bother me to be honest but I don't want to lie here so they were part of my diet a lot of weeks.

I'm sure they're are better diets out there but that worked for me hopefully it can help you and even if it doesn't you should stick with getting fit and healthier as it makes such a difference to your life.

P.S if anyone would like to criticise(or compliment haha) my diet feel free I'd like to hear it as I'm constantly looking to improve myself these day.

    Cheers

First of all - congratulations on losing so much weight!

Drinking lots of water is great, especially because sometimes when you feel hungry it's actually that you're thirsty. My one concern with your diet is that you might get very bored if you're eating the same things all the time! I know I have to vary things quite a bit, use different spices and herbs etc to keep things interesting. I wouldn't be a huge fan of the Knorr quick lunches though - do you not find that after eating so much good, healthy food that they taste like cardboard?

Have you thought about joining a gym or starting to run? If you were to start running, it would help to improve your fitness for football too, and some weight training (Starting Strength, for example) would help to speed up your metabolism too.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

To be honest I don't eat the quick lunches only had it the once but it tasted ok to me and they're cheap and hav low calories so just thought I'd tell him cause he said he's on a tight budget. On the diet I know what you mean with getting bored thats why I added the parsley into the potatoes but besides that I'm finding it ok. Got a gym membership for christmas and it's been great I'm down there every second day and the difference it's made is startling. Overall I think losing the weight and getting fit has been probably the best thing I've ever done with my life and I hope the OP keeps on with this as it really is worthwhile.
