I've been looking to buy a car recently and i've found a nice ford puma that i quite like but when i said it to my girlfriend she told me that its a girls car and that i shouldnt even think about getting. But i've always liked them plus the 1.7l model is fairly quick!!!

What do all you guys think about them as a car....Girls car or ok for a man?

Its one of those cars that you shouldn't worry about other peoples opinions, a bit like the Mx-5.
The Puma is a cracker of a car!!!!!1.7 is pokey, handling is one of the best front wheel drives going.

Girly yes, but a drivers car too so if it floats your boat you could do a lot worse.

For driving, I wouldn't even look at a Cougar!! Too long, too soft and too American!!

    Hey Mate

if you like the Ford Puma fair enough... but in fairness they are a bit of a womans car

why not try its BIGGER brother.. the Ford Cougar, was not very popular in this country at all and they can be picked up for dirt cheap.

They are a a mans car and do look well, they are a nice looking car like

have a read of this to get you started

CharlieCroker, have you driven a Puma? Is it a nice car to drive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,863 ✭✭✭RobAMerc

I drove a Puma - although I have never needed my car to prove my masculinity.

Cracking little car - if you care about how your car drives rather than how your car makes you look, you could do an awful lot worse than a Puma.

Serious motor heads would never slag a car as good as the Puma off for being a girls car as they'd know how good they are. Those unsure of their own sexuality would.

Ya, drove the 1.4 first and thought it was grand. Girl in work had one. Could have been quicker. Buddy in the trade had a 1.7 for sale and took that for a spin and thought it was great. would have bought it if had a bit more space. Would recommend one to anyone. Reasonable to maintain too cos it shares a lot of parts with the Fiesta

They are like a moped..... great fun to drive but embarrassing if your mates see you on it

(Also funny if you replace moped with fat chick)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,863 ✭✭✭RobAMerc

my Dad had a cougar - cracking drive if you can put up with the rest of the sillyness of it.

Its basically a Mondeo in coupe form.

The 2.0 is no ball of fire though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,550 ✭✭✭Slig

The whole "girls" car is subjective. Some men will like a certain car even though it is percieved as girly(eg. mazda mx-5, toyota rav4, mini cooper) and then try justify it by torque figures, BHP and roadholding.

Some other men may also even be able to see this side but ask any girl and you'll get a resounding "thats a girls car" It may have something to do with practicality and style.

Personally I dont give a crap, I would love a mx-5 because of how it drives, I dont care how anybody else sees it (also might be easier to get one if the OH thinks its for her:D)

Definately a girls car in terms of looks.

Having said that I think Top Gear gave it car of the year a while back. It was the old series and Tiff Needle gave it the thumbs up as a drivers car. The show ended with Tiff taking the 2 other guys around a track while they cursed him.

This isn't the clip but he refers to it at the start

I had one years ago from new and loved it. Probably the best handling car I've had other than the M3. Handles like a go Kart, very reliable and well built. I had it for 2 years and loved it.

Nissan Micra - Agree, and old people

Any Ford Fiesta - disagree (Fiesta ST)

Toyota Rav - Not just women, just pointless

    Audi A3 - Disagree (S3, 1.8T)

    A Class Mercedes - Agree

Renault Clio - Agree bar RenaultSport

Fiat...well all of them TBH - Arbath versions??

just saying the sportier model does not make it a man car.

They "look" like women cars . extra power and stupid bodykits aint goin to make it manlier

Apart from the clio..... i think that is sweet in the 182 model

I've driven most of the above at some stage and i'd buy any of them if fun was the only criteria. Especially the MINI, Fiesta and Audi

Mini Cooper - Agree although i'd love a nice grey cooper s
Nissan Micra - Agree or as my mother refers to it "a fanny car"
Any Ford Fiesta - yes, old women
    Toyota Rav - Yes
    Audi A3 -Kind of
    A Class Mercedes - Yes
    Renault Clio - Yes
Fiat...well all of them TBH - No

Although this isn't one of those threads. Puma is a girls car, have yet to see a man driving one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,550 ✭✭✭Slig

Ya instead of buying that car and possibly being accused of being female you should buy a Toyota Corolla or VW golf, that way you can only be accused of being boring.

Or this one for a bit extra. Not sure if VRT is included. If it is...its a bargain!

If I were the OP, i'd be on the phone to that seller already. Quite apart from how good it'd be to drive, that's probably as safe a car as any to put money into at the moment.

I think this car has been up a good while IIRC.

I'd bet there is a bit of room to move...

Another vote for the Puma as a womans car. Not as bad as the new VW beetle. You have to remove you balls before you get into them

+1 - Defo, but who cares - people like what we like, society and peers should not dictate and make it that we would not look at a particular type of car cos its "girly" , if we like a particular car and like how it drives and look then go for it [note if u do select said "girly" car and begrudgers bedammed attitude, DO not under any circumstances take it a step too far and wear that salmon pink shift in conjunction with cruising down o connell street];o)
