    huh?

Nothing wrong in asking you to make an appointment at a certain time. its tomorrow morning grab a bus/train what ever up to dublin tonight stay in a hotel near the place QED

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,821 ✭✭✭Xcellor

I'm sure he is just eager to get interviews underway and most likely does not even realise you are in the arse of nowhere.

When I get these calls I arrange a time that is suitable for both of you, most employers realise that you probably are working anyway so will need to arrange time off with your employer. But with jobs few and far between in many industries don't be suprised if companies want you to jump through extra hoops.

why is it their fault you applied for a job miles away from your home?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 384 ✭✭vms7ply9t6dw4b

Whats the problem? Were you expecting him to come to you?

Hes hardly forcing you now is he? Im sure theres plenty of people from further afield who would love the chance to be in sandyford tomorrow morning @ 9AM SHARP for a chance to get a job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭apoch632

Exactly. To be getting an interview with the way things are is a big thing. Head up tonight and get a hotel room. Is the €50 really that much if its a better job

I'll go instead of you. Trying to get a job at the moment, so far i have done interviews in Cork and Kildare, they were both treks......has to be done. Jobs are impossible to get at the moment.

    On an ending note
They took our jobs!!!(Due to our company going to India, and they are walking round here while we train them in with big smiles on their faces.)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭x in the city

Yes, but like less than a days notice.

They should be more considerate or flexible, my last job was in Citywest and the company knew where I was coming from, so they said like some time in the afternoon theres no hassle and if your late its fine etc.

Its fine if you are a dub, you probably know sandyford inside out, getting from the red cow to this place would probably take an hour.

So, I would have to leave at 4am to get there for 9am. which is ridiculous.

And these people I know are always looking for people, for this particular job anyway. So its not like they are getting this interview drive underway and are in a rush.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,879 ✭✭✭heggie

4am? boo hoo. don't bother going so. Btw, there is an exit on the m50 for sandyford, the red cow is the other side of dublin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭boredatwork82

Yeah I know, but it has to be done.... working for the MAN, they don't care about anything other than profit.
Hopefully this recession bites hard and we go back to farming and good honest work, and let all this ignorant multi nationals get out of our country.
I had an aptitude test last week, drove 2 and a a half hours to get there, they were half an hour late in bringing us into the test and no apologies, When they rang me back to come for interview, I declined and told them that i wouldn't work for a company that was so discourteous. Ring up this job. and tell them you cannot make the morning, and that you can only make afternoon interviews. they will see this as a sign of strength and that your not a puchover, and will hire you.

but the bottom line is in these economic days, we do what THE MAN says.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭x in the city

Yes, I know there is an exit for sandyford, But since I would be arriving from the sthicks, I would be on the N7 entering at the red cow anyway.

    great post

Maybe the person who is interviewing you is very busy and the only free time in their schedule is 9am in the morning. If you really want the job you will arrive on time and seem happy about it. The interviewer will realise this, however if you don't they will think of you differently .. it may not be fair but it is real life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,494 ✭✭✭kayos

Honestly 4am is nothing I do that every monday morning to get to my client in Dublin. I could list all the times/places where I've been requested one place or another and just had to go. Its life the market is hardly the employees playground any more where you could hop from one job to another.

Honestly be happy you are even getting a chance to interview many out there would give their right arm for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,288 ✭✭✭✭ntlbell

if you're not happy with how you're being dealt with by this company it's probably a good refecltion on how they're as a company.

explain your circumstances offer another time.

or kindly reject the offer and find another company to deal with you in a way of your liking.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,652 ✭✭✭I am pie

You need to show a bit more enthusiasm than that. Do you want the job enough to travel ? If not then that's going to come across in the inteview. If you appear hassled or annoyed by the early interview it's going to come across. If you travel you need to be telling yourself that this is proof that you are the right man for the job, you're up for it and you know you're going to succeed in the interview. If you come across as focused on yourself and how the job/interview affects you rather than how you can affect the company in a positive way then you're done for.

Otherwise you will be wasting your time. Sorry, sounds harsh but that's life.

  • Honestly, how much do you want the job that getting up at 4am is a deal breaker? I had an interview on Friday in Brussels - got up at 4.30, in a taxi, flew to Charleroi, got a bus to the train station, train to Brussels, metro to where I was going. By the time I got there it was 2pm and I had no time for lunch and I sat through an hour and a half interview and aptitude tests starving. C'est la vie. Getting from Kerry to Sandyford really isn't that big of a deal.
If I told the guy interviewing me, to meet me at 9AM SHARP, in some impossible to find locating in Kerry tomorrow morning, im sure you could guess what he would be thinking...

Thing is, you want the job. He doesn't. You live in rural Kerry, he lives in the capital. If you live in the arse end of nowhere, you can expect to have to travel for interviews and jobs, what's so unreasonable about that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭x in the city

    Lol

Well, apparently they will meet me monday or wednesday of next week.

So I guess THE MAN does rule after all....

but on a serious note, Its not a job I am looking to get into, but these recessionary times...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

He probably asked you to come in at 9am just to see if you wanted it bad to enough to actually do it!

    Now he has his answer.

You could even treat yourself to a night in the big city, stay in the Beacon Hotel which is in Sandyford.

I was unemployed once. I had to get to France the following day. In a matter of minutes I arranged all the travel details (including numerous train journeys) and made it to France no problem.

If you want it bad enough, you can do it.

OP: By next Monday or Wednesday, they will probably have interviewed quite a few people, and may have already made up their mind. I think you've made the wrong decision.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 711 ✭✭✭who007

I wouldn't bother - I think they got a Polish girl to stack those shelves instead.

OP you never told us what the job was? Might give us an idea as to why it aggravates you so much?

That would be very funny if the job was for a deli :D

But seriously, they asked you to be there for 9am. Presumably you asked to schedule the interview for a more suitable time, allowing for travel, before you went on a rant about how unreasonable they were?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭x in the city

How can they expect someone to get their s**t together for an interview in such short space of time.

I dont care if there is a recession or not, and the role wont be filled by next week, I know for one.

I could easily make dublin for tomorrow at 9am but I would have had to drive up and be in bits for the interview, so it would be a waste of time.

I drove to wankerford once 5 hours driving and this n0b of a HR guy asks me half way into the interview 'are you allergic to work'.

I told him im not allergic to work but I am allergic to **** like you wasting my time driving 5 hours for an interview and walked out*

    * actually, I did not say that, but on hindsight I should have

Well it doesn't matter if you have to drive up tomorrow or in 2 months time, you'd still be in ''bits''. So why the fúck did you apply for a job in Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,203 ✭✭✭partyguinness

Mate..be glad you have a job interview.

I was travelling to England for interviews at one stage on only a few days notice. I didnt complain.

Did you not know the interview would be in Dublin? It is short notice..so perhaps you should stop posting threads and get to it...:P

    Ba-dum-tish ;)

But just in response to the thread title. Most companies at the moment are having a lot of problems of their own. Managers want to get people in and hired quickly in case their recruitment budget gets pulled. They are inundated with applications for any jobs they do post, and smaller companies in particular don't have the systems or processes required to handle this kind of volume.

Granted they should still take into account peoples' personal situations and do what they can to accomodate. Maybe they thought that a full 24 hours was enough notice, maybe they don't know how long it takes to get here from Kerry, maybe they were working alphabetically down a list and didn't realise you weren't local......

You're doing well to have gotten an interview at the moment, so try not to mess it up by having such a negative attitude.

This is what happens when you live in the back arse of nowhere, why dont you move to a city where you can actually find work instead of whinging everytime you have to drive to an interview?

You need to get into your head that the company in question or any other company does not owe you siht so get off your high horse...

How can they expect someone to get their s**t together for an interview in such short space of time.
because you applied for the position, thereby implying that you were ready to actively seek work and attend an interview. If you were not in a position to do that then why did you apply???
I dont care if there is a recession or not, and the role wont be filled by next week, I know for one.
so if you don't care, then get over it and stop whinging?
I could easily make dublin for tomorrow at 9am but I would have had to drive up and be in bits for the interview, so it would be a waste of time.
so you admit you can easily do it but you still complain, and whinge? yes you are right, it would be a waste of time - for the interviewer as you clearly have a very poor and negative attidude.
I drove to wankerford once 5 hours driving and this n0b of a HR guy asks me half way into the interview 'are you allergic to work'.
this man from 'wankerford' seems very astute - seems like he got the cut of you fairly quickly.
I told him im not allergic to work but I am allergic to **** like you wasting my time driving 5 hours for an interview and walked out*

    * actually, I did not say that, but on hindsight I should have
yes your right, in hindsight you should have said that - you were far too nice and polite and charming. This is obviously your downfall, you should be more 'honest'.

I for one am glad people like you are looking for jobs - in fact i hope that you get interviewed right before me. Then even if I go in looking like a hobo, not giving a **** and being a rude twat I will still impress them compaired to you.

Charm is your very essence my friend!

My atttitude doesnt suck, I am just a resonable guy. I have done plenty interviews and 9 times out of 10 they would taken into account your travel distance and try and accomodate you as much as they can.

It seems the company were not aware I was so far away.

Don't be so picky... If you NEED a job, go for the interview. It's not like the few hours of travel would kill you...

btw... what job is it? can we have a look? :D maybe some of us would be happy to get there in time...:p

Stay in Bewleys Leopardstown. Its cheaper than the beacon. I have a feeling that if you feck up this opportunity one like it is not going to come round again in a month or two. All joking aside, it's not two years ago and our economy is not what it was. Dont shoot yourself in the foot because you're 'over qualified' and you think you're too good for the company. Pride is a terrible thing OP.

You handled this badly OP imho.

What you should have said was "actually I have another interview tomorrow at 9am would it be possible to schedule something for later in the day?"

It sends out the message that you are in demand and is an effective way of pushing the interview back until later in the day in a manner that they can't really argue with.

I've done it before to great effect.

You can STFU any time soon, poor you getting an interview. Make arrangements and leave early, leave the night before and stay in a B and B. Do something about it, bitching here isn't going to help.

I used to live in the sticks too, when I got an interview on that short notice I simply explained to them that I live in the sticks and will need more time to organise transport. Christ, it's not rocket science.

Sick of people whining about work when there are tens of thousands of us out there dying for a chance.

Just checked – you can find relevant maps and timetables on the internet. So there's no excuse.
