    Hi all,

Just wondering if you think its possible to negotiate a gym's membership fee? There are a couple of gyms close to me but they are too expensive for me (about E800 & E980) One is a health club in a hotel..
Also, for any successful negotiators out there - any tips on how to negotiate it???

    Thanks in advance

Yes, it's possible. It does depend on the gym, ones run by the owners are usually much more open to haggling.

You can ask about off-peak use, or see if you can get a better deal if you agree not to use the aerobic classes or pool or something similar. Or see if you can get a reduction if you pay cash.

Tell them that you've been quoted a price of whatever you want to pay by a similar gym, but you'd rather join them if they could match the price.

Sounds stupid, but try not to look like a bodybuilder when you go to haggle. BB-ers tend to actually use the gym, and gym owners would prefer users who only go occasionally, and look good when they are there. Don't look like someone who grunts and sweats while lifting.

Good advice above. Make out like you are a new years resolutionite, maybe ask if you can get money back if you pull out in a few months, so they will have it in their mind that you might do just that.

Many have these "get 2-4 people and get a discount", I expect many would just give you this discount, it is just a marketing gimmick after all.

On a simliar topic, my renewal for TF Sandyford is coming up in about 3-4months. I've noticed online that they have a 'special offer' of 675 euro with no joining fee. Personally, i don't remember paying a joining fee last time.

My point is, once you join one total fitness gym you're a member of them all, as far as i know. With this is mind, the membership fee on the .co.uk site is 467.50 GBP or 42.50 GBP / month. The Irish site does not give an option for paying per month.

As of today this works out as 499 EURO/year and 45.35 EURO/month (544 EURO for the year).

Basically, has anyone done this before or is it likely to work, I can imagine them kicking up a bit of a fuss about it.

Getting them in a head lock normally works:D I am a member of total and I have to say that they would be the best around at the moment. Join one and your a member of them all. €900 membership? Thats crazy mate, I would want someone to shower me after I trained for that money. Give the guys in Total a shout, might be worth a go but call into Blanch Total and ask for Eric, tell him that you were in with the guys in pro-nutrition. Worth a go mate.

I ran TF a few months ago about this and they said when you go to the gym it monitors which gym location you use ie the TF in castleknock is cheaper to join than Sandyford. You have to be using the gym you are registered with for about 80% of the time or else they will charge you the price of the other gym. If you are only joining for a year and pay the full price up front then i don't see what difference it makesand you can join the cheaper one and use the other
