White cars

What's everyone opinion on white cars?

They've never really been that popular over here IMO (Apart from the skanger Integras etc) but starting to see more of them.
I think bigger cars, 5 series etc or coupes tend to look quite good in white.

The obvious problem is the wet manky roads/weather really show up the colour badly and quickly.

    Example

White can work very well on some cars, depending on the shape.

I think it doesn't matter what colour you get in Ireland, the roads/weather/dirt will always show up.

Personally, I don't like it, but it's only a personal choice. Some cars suit, some don't.

Bad, bad news, show up dirt like mad you will take a bigger hit on values. They work in bright, hot, dry countries where they are very popular, but here it's a big no no IMO.

Had an A4 in last year in White. New model with the more aggresive looking front end and DRL's.

Brand new and Shiny in the garage it looked fantastic. I took it to re-fuel and deliver to the driver and more or less as soon as I got out of the gates of the industrial estate I felt like a prize pillock driving it.

You will get noticed in a premium car in white. Very much depends if you want to be noticed or not I suppose.

    Better in bright red imo

Everyone says they are the worst for showing up the dirt. I'm looking at my black car outside the window. It was only washed Sunday and already looks like its been through an off-road assault course so imagine what it would look like if it had ventured outside the city in the last two days.

I say a nice white E92 the other day. Looked the dogs. Also say a white 1 series coupe. That wasn't shabby either.

That just screams I'm too cheap to pay for metallic to me! I think with white you can get away with it...

I'm all for white, i think it looks the business. It all depends on the car though, things like basic Corolla's look horrible in white, Golf Gti's etc look very nice in white. I think the higher the spec, the better it looks in white.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 307 ✭✭victor1

impractical - showing up every speck of dust - think people have a general dislike for the colour though. Actually does anyone have the statistic on what;s the least sold car colour in the world, would suggest a tie between white and yellow?
Had a white car before, 1st car in fact, but was such a heap of SH*T the colour was the least of my worries:D - Would never buy one again though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

I love white, and if I ever got the money to get myself a brand new high spec car it would be in white.

The oul lad used to drive a C4 Coupe VTS in white. It looked the business with the Upgrade wheels and moon roof.

I had a white Fiat Punto for a few years- prior to that I'd have tended to shy away from white cars- but it looked quite good, and really took wax nicely.

I had a few people run into the back of me at traffic lights- and one idiot drive into me at speed in a side on collision in a car park- which necessitated the replacement of panels and a door. A big big problem with white cars is the way the paint fades slightly in sunlight- its far more noticeable than other colours in my opinion. I've had to get far more than panels sprayed just to maintain an overall evened out colour- which really really bugged me.......

That said- I've now a Volvo in metalic gunmetal grey. If anything at all happens- it needs a respray. Thank god its a standard colour in Volvos........

Would never buy a white car myself although the VW Scirocco looks very good in white.

Disco 2 or 3? I've only seen one Disco 3 in white, a basic spec commercial. Didn't like it in white at all.

White works very well with sports cars and coupés. Golf GTI and the E92 are my two favourite white cars. Some exotic cars like Lamborghinis are also stunning in white. You need the right model ;)

It was a Disco 2, passenger version. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of it

    EDIT:

Here's a pic from Sept 2001 from the day when I bought my convertible (still have that one!) Sorry it's a bad picture but I don't think I have any more pics.

Can't say i'd be a fan of it in white. I hope it wasn't a poverty spec with the big black bumpers lol:D

Are you sure that didnt have a lot more to do with it being a Punto? Ive seen plenty of non-White Puntos with faded paint, bumpers, lights randomly flashing, bits falling off etc

I've really warmed to white but it has to be the right car - the initial 5 series is ruined by those bling bling rims - the new M3, S5, M5 all look well as do many supercars. As regards keeping it clean I dont know as I never had a white one, but I did have a black one and it was a nightmare to keep clean - even in dry weather it really showed up the dust

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭P.C.

I don't think white cars show up the dirt so much.

I owned one a few years back, and it never showed the dirt as bad as dark colour cars (bird sh1te is mostly white). :D

I think you might find that there have been more white cars manufactured world wide than any other car - you could only get white cars in Russia for years.

But, it does depend on the model. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Owenw

Hate white cars. I associate white with White Van Man in his grubby old Transit, Jap sports cars and washing machines, etc.

I suspect white cars will date rapidly and I expect it will go out of fashion pretty quickly.

Still, if you want your car to match your gloss white kitchen units, be my guest. :D

White cars are definitely in rite now - saw an R8 in white the other day. Has to be the best colour for it .

Also the new Mazda 6 looks a corker in white .

Have to agree totally with the astra especially . This is a pretty ordinary looking car but in white looks alot more desireable

I sold my white E36 last year, getting all emotional now:( It was one of the easier car colours that I had to keep clean. Non metallic paint though. I have a silver Cougar now and its impossible to keep right but as you say PC the dark colours are harder than any to keep clean. I would have a white car again, no worries at all.

I find white suits sporting cars,

    106GTi
    Mk V Golf GTi
    Honda Civic & Integra
    Honda S2000
    New BMW M3
    Porsche 911 GT3 (Looks fantastic)
Lancer Evo 7 (Looks ace when really, really dirty!)

Looks rubbish on regular cars, makes them look like a commercial van.

I think that the only place you can pull off a white paint job is California! :pac:

They don't look that bad in sunshine but here in fabulous Ireland I think they just don't look right. Plus white ages very badly I think

If its a Jap sports car then they always look good in white (well nearly always)

99.9% of the time you don't get a choice if your buy a 2nd hand jap import... they are nearly always white.

regular run of the mill mo mo's do not look good in white... IE Ford Mondeo

    My car is white.

Its looks the business "when" it's clean. but with mucky Irish Roads it rarely is.

    my 2 cents
