Why does Obama offer hope?

Im curious as to why people in general see Obama becoming US president offers hope to the world. Sure its great that he is the first non white president of the US and that the US can be mature enough to leave prejudice at the door, but where is the hope coming from?

His election speeches were pretty general (most of them anyway) when it came to topics and he didnt go into specific detail on many topics, bar the financial crisis.

So Im trying to work out why we are so hopeful?

So for $1m, is it because:

    a) Women think he is hot
    b) He is African American
    c) He is charismatic
    d) He has an ipod

Unfortunately due to Bush, there are no lifelines remaining! :D

    "Why does Obama offer hope?"

Because catchy vague sound bites get people elected.

Because Hollywood portrays black American presidents as cool.
And he's young so has more energy for change and perceived capacity to handle stress.

Not quite true. If that were the case Ross Perot would have been a shoe back in 92 against Clinton.

Ross for Boss V It's time to change America.

Pighead knows which one he would have picked. Ross for Boss, Ross for Boss, Ross for Boss.

But Americans don't usually like "The Boss" (except Springsteen obviously) so it was a doomed campaign. Boss makes it sound like you're working for him whereas all this change/hope stuff gives you a nice "we're all in this together" vibe.

that sums it up pretty nicely. any president other than dubya would offer hope at this stage, up to and including a block of cheese

It's a good point javaboy. Pighead has to get into the habit of putting more thought about what exactly these slogans are saying.

Mustn't get so dazzled by the clever rhymes or shiny lettering. Never been much good at this voting lark.

During 6th year in college whilst voting for the Class Prefect, Pighead gave away his precious vote to a thicko called Donna who had absolutely no leadership or people skills. She would have been a rubbish prefect. Shamefully it was her
"A vote for Donna is a vote for a chance to have a free squeeze of my boobies" slogan that drew Pighead in.

He said up to and including. Sarah Palin is on the opposite side of that block of cheese along with a shoe, a half empy jar of marmite and Jaws (all of which wouldnt make very good Presidents at all)

Pighead went to the De La Salle College, a secondary school in Dundalk. Wonderful school in a wonderful town. It was the logical place to go as Pighead is also wonderful.

As some already said: Because he's not Bush and not a republican.

    Also:

    * He's worked from leaving education, from the ground upwards directly serving the poorest of the people daily. He was the best of the best in his years of college and could have gotten any job with huge wages in companies, yet he decided to go into the worst areas and serve the public in low paid legal roles.
    * Because he's a thinker. He has a nick-name "No Drama Obama". In other words, he's far less likely to over react and act irrationally. He is widely known and respected both sides of the political fence for his honesty and perseverance is seeking to get a job done.
    * Because he is the first president that is opening willing to take on the major drug companies that have Washington buried in lobbyists.
    * Because he is a more peaceful natured person - not a war monger.
    * Because he believes in the rule of law - and not see it as something to be circumvented.
    * Because he truly believes in free speech. He has also stated that the because of changes in the presidential law under muppet Bush, those laws have gone too far and he intends to revoke them. He also intends to re-change a number of laws back to pre-Bush era.
    * Because other countries will be willing to work with him given his more open and peaceful nature. A lot of countries (friend and foe) have stated that they also see a great opportunity to take steps forward together in commerce, democracy and understanding (and if America does start recovering, every one will get some knock on effect). This all makes the world perhaps a better safer place maybe!
    * Because he wants to tackle the warring African countries and bring peace and stability to them through peaceful means. Mugabe look out!
    * Because maybe he is what he appears to be, a down to earth nice guy. A guy that although still has to work within the corrupt American political apparatus, he can still inspire others to go along with him and start making changes to it as he wants to.

Biggins said the best reasons but it should also be noted that the big thing that got him elected was his reaction to the financial crisis - he looked strong and McCain - well, he made a comment about the fundamentals being strong and looked completely hopeless.

To add to that, he is also an excellant public speaker who can inspire people. He made people believe in change, and he made them believe he could do it.

If you can inspire people like that they become motivated to follow you and work for you, unlike Bush who people hated and opposed.

Rupert Murdoch et al and their pro-democrat, pro-minority agenda have fooled us all again. But RTE's the worst - Anne Doyle's up to something reporting the news using reports and pictures from the States - makes me sick.
Another 4 years of Bush would tickle my bits just fine.

Because he has created a chain reaction, if people believe "they can" then they can. Hope creates confidence, confidence feeds off itself. Obama is just a representation of what America has wanted to become after 8 years of W. Even his speeches are based around everybody coming together to make the country better. Think of him as the person that gave them that push using excellent public speaking.

POTUS Obama Halts Bush Rules and Regs

    January 20, 2009 7:05 PM

The new paint in the White House likely hasn’t even dried yet, but newly-minted President Barack Obama’s team is already on the job.

When government workers return to their desks tomorrow after today's holiday, they will be met with some new instructions. This afternoon, White House Chief of Staff and Assistant to the president, Rahm Emanuel issued a memorandum ordering all U.S. government agencies to stop implementing any pending rules and regulations issued by the Bush administration until the Obama administration has an opportunity to review and sign off on them.

Per the memorandum, any proposed or final regulation cannot be published until it has been approved by an agency head appointed by President Obama. The memorandum also advises extending for 60 days the date of regulations in the Federal Register that have not yet been implemented.

You can read the memo HERE.

Crikey, thats a hell of a generalisation.

Sorry but I disagree. In this day and age of folk worrying about their home, medical bills, children's education, job security etc I suspect they have moved on from the way outdated modes of thinking you possess.
I think most see him as a possible start of future solutions to their worries. A hope for the future...

I really think black people voted for him because he's black and white people voted for him to rid their guilt about the slavery of his people.

There's probably an element of that, but I'd say he mostly won on his own merits. He clearly came across as the best candidate from the primaries onwards, he's charismatic, intelligent and appears genuine. I don't know how things will turn out for him, but I wish him the best of luck.
