Obama's inauguration speech - Will you tune in?

Will you take time to listen to Obama's inauguration speech tomorrow?
Will you deliberately tune in to see the first African-American become the Americas president?

Grateful thanks to Overheal for the following info:

    Live Streaming Feeds
If you don't have access to a TV, but don't have to worry about the corporate gestapo monitoring your every web movement, live streams of the inauguration are probably the way to go—and they're plentiful. From the sounds of it, there are two good choices:
Live Senate Feed: The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies' stream is about as official as it gets, with not only the live inauguration available, but also clips to past inaugurations and an overload of supplementary content on anything tangentially related to the event.
CNN/Facebook: There was nothing more quality/entertaining/ridiculous than CNN's coverage of live events during the 2008 Presidential Campaign (pundit debate scorecards, holographic projections, Toobs!) and from the sounds of it, the CNN/Facebook live inauguration feed will be no different. You log into Facebook direct from CNN's live site, watch the inauguration, and watch your friends' status updates in real-time.
    • There's also Hulu, but they're streaming the network which shall not be named.
    Non-video Web 2.0 Updates
InaugurationReport.com: If you can't get away with video at your desk, but can hide some text/photo updates behind a tab, you might want to consider InaugurationReport.com, which takes all the citizen generated content from Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and SMS, then aggregates it all on one page. It's your one stop shop for quick desk updates.

    Mobile Web
If you do suffer the misfortune of being under heavy surveillance, then your only option left is to consider a new job grab your iPhone/G1, fake a lengthy trip to the bathroom, and use one of these services from the comfort of your stall:
    • Ustream on iPhone: Ustream promises to stream the inauguration to your iPhone using their fancy new app...IF it manages to get approved by Apple before tomorrow. And considering that's a big if, I wouldn't place all your inauguration viewing hopes and dreams behind this.
    • Inauguration Report on iPhone and Android: Inauguration Report also has free iPhone and Android apps where you can not only take in all the same content as the desktop client, but you can also provide live updates if you have any. However, seeing as you've resorted to hiding in a bathroom stall, I doubt you'll have any.

Not all above options may be available through non-US IP

I've watched most of the previous inaugurations, really like Obama so will definitely switch it on or watch a recording if I'm not around.

I don't, however, like how much of a deal people are making out of the fact that he has some african blood in him.

yes. but because i fancy him, not because i particularly want to hear "yes we can"

I'm just going to wait until South Park parody it with a condensed funny version sans the boring bits.

Varies on each station but for the BBC:

    NEWS: President Obama: The Inauguration
On: BBC 1 Northern Ireland (141)
Date: Tuesday 20th January 2009 (starting tomorrow afternoon)
    Time: 16:00 to 18:00 (2 hours long)

Live coverage of the Inauguration of President Obama, with Huw Edwards and Matt Frei in Washington.

I'm just going to wait for the best bits on the Colbert Report and The Daily show.

Odds are that there'll be something equal parts awful and hilarious said by some pundit (my money is on O'Reilly or that haradin Coulter) and that's going to be best part.

I felt a bit cringy when reading about the Obama inauguration concert. Why on earth is there a need for such hulabaloo? He's becoming more of a celebrity by the week. Springsteen, Beyonce, Bono, all celebrating his election win. Obama would have better spent his time working behind the scenes sorting out the war that has just finished in the Middle East or the global recession started by his country.

Indeed but Bush is still the president so Obama cannot go above his head.

Could Obama change any of the inauguration speech that is written for him?
Or is it worded so carefully, that he would not be allowed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,814 ✭✭✭BaconZombie

Yes I'm going to be watching it from SPACE.......

GeoEye-1, the “Google satellite,” will capture the Obama Inauguration from space

He will have given his speech writers a great idea of what he wants many, many, many times over weeks.
They only write what that is to the best dramatic and effective clearness effect.

He can change what he likes, when he likes up to a certain point in time beforehand. Time for last minute updating the visual teleprompter is taken into account.
The final draft of his speech in text form at the same time is released across the networks so any final changes that he wants to make actually on the podium, he knows, is not for the best, moments before he steps up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 154 ✭✭bottlerocket

Yes I will be watching, stuff like this doesn't come along too often. Forget the cynics, this is genuinely historic and a day to be hopeful. One of those rare days when you believe that politics can bring meaningful change.

That said, I remember saying the same when Bliar moved into Downing St.

Thanks , Biggins , I was wondering , because as far as I know it is written by more than one person , and very carefully written at that.
I didn't know how long he had before the actual ceremony to read over it and give his approval, or not , as the case may be.

I've heard Obama writes most of his speeches himself, it's only when he doesn't have time that he gets speech writers to do it for him.

Does anyone know if there'll be a live feed available on the internet anywhere? I'll finish a lecture at 4 and wouldn't get home until about 5 if I'm fortunate. Don't really wanna miss it.

    No. Why would anyone?

all he's gonna do is talk about 'change' and then not do a fúcking thing.

A bit early to say - he isn't even sworn in as President.

Ask the same question this time next year.

I will more than likely be in work for most of it, will probably see it on the news.

If I wasn't working, I would watch it, just to hear what he had to say.

Well he is different because he doesn't fit the usual profile of a politician, nevermind president. He isn't an extremely wealthy man, which is very unusual for someone in his political position. He doesn't have family ties. He doesn't have private business ties. He only recently paid off his student loan.

Also, this whole "change" and "unity" thing isn't just a presidential slogan he came up with. There's videos of him on youtube using remarkably similar speeches when he was running for the US senate in 2004. He has said the same things throughout his political career which, to me, shows that he truly believes them.

He is someone the average American can relate to most compared to any other recent President.

Compare this to McCain, who when asked in an interview, couldn't remember how many houses he currently owns. Current estimates put the total at around 8.

This guy isn't God though. He's just human. And he'll only have a maximum of 8 years and a restricted amount of powers to bring this change. I'm not saying it's definitely going to happen or that America will be a hugely different place when he leaves office. But if America is ever going to change, I think Obama will be the biggest chance they ever have.
