weekend car & weekday runaround for 45K

I thinking of changing from one expensive everyday car to a cheap weekday driver (about 5K) and a mad car for weekend and special occasions. (about 40K)
The idea is to get something for the weekend where running costs dont matter cause obviously no great amount of miles will be clocked up but the daily driver would need to be totally reliable so not a old car either. (possibly a commercial & diesel)

Everything considered but current M5 is outside my budget (for now)
age: roughly 2003 on.
Fuel: Petrol
Engine size: Big
Rear wheel drive

Insurance & tax will be steep but might be possible

Well Ive no need for 5 seats so not a priority but I do like big animal cars. I love M5 but not sure if I would go for the old one now. Nice car in the link but Id be spending more than that hopefully.

Not stripped out. Needs to be classy too. About 40K, Current M5 would be a guide but too expensive.

I bought a '02 M5 and find myself driving it all the time now, I can get 23mpg if I want to be frugal. I do have a few bikes for commuting when the frost is gone though so I dont put up an awful lot of miles on the M5.

I am gonna suggest a Focus for runabout and the Tuscan for the weekend.

They are built for that and that only. I would also invest in some advanced driving courses or a coffin.

I would take an E46 M3 but I think I would just use that everyday if I had it. I need something that I couldnt possibly use everyday. TVR is a good suggestion in that regard.
I do like CL500 & SL500 too.

Thing is the CL500/SL500 are totally different compared to the TVR. The Merc's are big, powerful comfortable cruisers, whereas the TVR is totally mental. Personally I dont see how an E46 M3 could be considered an everyday car where the Merc's couldn't. TVR is on a totally different level imo.

If it isn't more than 15-20k in total you might be better of with just the big engined but not so mad car as a daily driver (M3, M5, RS6, C-class AMG, CL etc.)

But I fear the total mileage is more than that...

Im not debating that TVR is totally different to the mercs. I made the point that the tvr was a good suggestion as there is not a hope of using that as a mile muncher.
With the M3, it would be expensive to use it everyday but its possible and would be reliable etc.
I didnt comment on whether the merc would be an everyday or weekend car but yes I would agree, they could be considered everyday drivers for small mileage.
There is no case in my opinion where the tvr could be used day in day out

Well I had the old TT before current car so not having that as its nowhere near powerful enough. Also that is only front wheel drive and is a disaster if anything like my current A5 not being albe to put power down and with a heavy right foot, the front wheels jump and bang as the tyre gets grip, loses it etc.

Not a citroen fan at all either

Well i do about 25-27k miles. I just put the question out there. Im looking at all options:
Cheap weekday and expensive weekend car
Expensive weekday and cheap powerful machine for weekend
One car, newish cruiser with style & power, 535d etc (price 50k)

You were driving the wrong TT - my 2 were Quattro.

How's this for an idea - I know where there's a 270bhp Quattro TT for about 13k - and buy an S15 for weekdays. There, 2 x cool cars. (and both saleable, later.....) and loads of money left over.

Take the the TT up to 330bhp if you're up for it - it sounds astonishing at 270as - is.

You misunderstand. My TT was quattro too. I meant the TT suggested by other poster as a good buy was 2 wheel drive and that it would be no better than my front wheel drive A5. I am driving the wrong A5 though I would have to say. Maybe its the quattro experience but the A5 is not suiting me at all.

A 535d is a great motor and a great allround car, but is it really exciting enough for you as a weekend car? If I were in your position I'd either look at a semi-sensitive petrol big engined car like an M5 or a cheap reliable weekday car like a Focus diesel and a mad weekend car. That Irish TVR springs to mind

God knows! I doubt its on ROS - NEW VRT formula for "rare & collectible cars":

TVRs would suit the bill perfectly, except they are a bucket of kit-car sh*te that needs the engine rebuilt every 30k, provided the bits stay on long enough and you haven't smashed into a lamppost. I'd rather have a 2CV.
Buying an (old) supercar, like the ferrari, will be virtually depreciation-proof too.

A 2 wheel drive one! Ive a 1.8TFSI 170bhp approx and its poor to be honest. It cannot handle even that amount of power through the front wheels. I have various handling problems which I assumed were anything from wheel alignment to faulty control arms but having driven a few, they all have the same 'characteristics' to varying degrees. Its on 245/40/18 from factory but had to fit 225/45/18 to front to make it useable. Still not happy at all with it tbh and having replaced TT with A5 hoping it would be more of a cruiser and better for mayo roads, Im not happy. TT was great and I dont know why people say they not a good car. It was certainly not a golf like some would make us believe.

Cheers, i'd say the exige would be tough work on the roads of Mayo tho.

Other option is to fit an LSD to the A5 and to remap it for more power, turn it into the car that Audi couldn't make.

My point exactly. But I agree the Lotus + 530d is a good alternative!

If you have the 40k to spend I would suggest buying something FUN as opposed to all the AUDI's, BMW's, Merc's Etc
