Toyota Altezza - why so expensive second hand?

I can't understand why these cars are so pricey second hand. I see examples of '99 and '00 cars which are looking for ~€10k.

Are their owners delusional? or are they truly an 'awesome' car?

It is because modifiers and young people are big into them so like hondas they are over priced

yes, they are the new creamers blingmobile. That is reason enough to avoid them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,413 ✭✭✭HashSlinging

delusional big time .. but they are good cars 10k for a '00 is madness though.. max should be about 6.5k..

You could buy a Lexus IS200 for 6000K and pop on a new front grill and altezza badge..

    And Bingo

    You've got one!

I think they are essentially the same except I think the Altezza has a better rear diff. not 100% sure though so you will have to google it.

if I am wrong please correct me :)

With the MPG that they offer, and the noise from them, I'm definitely not a potential buyer.

IIRC they have different suspension and toyota celica SS2/3 ?? 4 cyliner engines not the 6 cylinder is200 ones, i think there like 190-220pbh compared to 150 for an IS. MPG is poor. seem to be a great car but most are overly chaved, and probably ragged to death.

Seem to be popular in Skangerdanavia for some reason.

Yeh, the Altezza Rs200 is completely different to an is200, different engines, different suspension, 207Bhp as standard in the Altezza compared to 150bhp in the is200, they both have the same MPG making the Altezza the better car to go for.

There really slow compared to other cars with 200 odd bhp though and are RWD so they'll have been ragged around a bit alright.

Any car that has reasonable power and is within a certain financial reach will fall victim to "skangers" owning them, its not a reason not to like or buy a car though.

RWD Toyotas seem to have a cult following unlike most others. Look at the AE86... €12,000 for one of those is a joke!

they like it for the name, dunno why, considering for the same money as an altezza you can get a lexus IS200 (same car essentially) with the satnav and full leather , and also the lexus probably wont be driven to shít like the altezzas would racing around

I'd drive one. Had one for a day and lovely car to drive, mpg would be a killer though. That said, the beams engine was sweet.

Not really into cars meself but I do like the alteezas in all fairness. If I ever went to 4 wheels instead of two I would much rather looking like a skanger in an alteeza compared to them muppets who drive jeeps as an everyday car. Urban cowboys. Hates em.

    GTFO! :p

I cant say im a fan of them myself. Generally driven by tossers who have graduated from a Civic. Dont like the grille on them and an IS200 has nicer detailing. The Altezza just looks cheap imo. They are not a particularly quick car so i dont see what all the fuss is about. They have put me off ever wanting an altezza/is200

Once a car falls into the clutches of the the braindead ie. boyracers i lose all interest in having one.

Altezza's are nice cars, but you get what you pay for. You could find an absolute clean one that hasnt been abused for around the 10k mark compared to one you would find at 6-7k which more that likely has seen the world sideways. Tbh I would go the for the 10k one anyday. Obviously if you look around and wait you will find a beams for under 10k easily.

I would also consider the Lexus IS200 sports, not as similar, spec wise but still as nice a car.

Also, outta curiosity. Why wouldnt you like one given that their associated with boy racers?

I just think boy racers are a scourge on society and generally know nothing/very little about cars and thus give real car enthusiasts a bad name. They just buy what's considered cool and have little or no imagination. I like the idea of driving a car no one else has and certainly not one that interests that type of driver. Dont want to be labled with that lot.

Cars i would take over an Altezza for similar money:
    Alfa 156 GTA
    Saab 9-3 Viggen

because buying a 2nd hand one it might have been raced to bits, scumbags might find them more attractive to steal, also the gardai might show a little more interest in you if its a car well known to be a 'scummer' car

I suppose, but imo its the individual person that creates the name. Like I know alot of people with a modified car that are genuinely interested into mechanics. He doesnt mess or abuse the car and he doesnt get any more attention from guards than someone driving a 07 ford focus.

    Also, alfa definally :p

Ya I agree there, more so with the car driven to bits. not too bothered about the guards.

yes, they are the new creamers blingmobile. That is reason enough to avoid them.

What do you drive? I used to have an altezza and it was a brilliant car. Never attracted any unwanted attention and never gave me any troubles. They are a much higher spec performance wise hence the higher price compared to the IS200. Also they are imports so the dealers tend to sell them at an unrealistic higher price, hence keeping the average market value for them higher than they are actually worth. I have yet to see a "creamer" driving one of these and i know a lot of genuine car enthusiasts that own them. There seems to be a lot of people giving opinions about these cars and the don't even know the full spec on them. Same with most jap imports, try and buy a fresh one that doesn't have any previous Irish owners, and get it fully serviced including timing belt as soon as you can.

The Altezza are far and away less reliable than the IS200. I've had both and would never touch an Altezza. The 6 cyl engine is much more reliable and while not as fast is plenty fast for most. Might be my age showing (late 20's) but I'd rather reliabilty over odd bursts of speed.

Have to agree completely the line between proper car enthusiasts that actually enjoy there cars responsibly, take care of there cars and have a genuine interest in there cars and how to enjoy them responsibly is becoming so blurred with the scumbag boy racer element that the general public just label anything in some cars as boy racers.

    This thread is an example,

Some car enthusiasts have Altezza's, they look after them and enjoy them responsibly.
Some scumbags/boy racers have Altezza's, they rag them, annoy everyones heads with them, are dangerous on the public road.

But people label the Altezza as a scumbag/boy racer car because they get hassle off them and the poor people who enjoy them get tarred with the same image.

As above I know a few enthusiasts that have them but I have also unfortunately seen plenty of what "creamers" driving them too, its just unfortunate that any sub €15k performance car will be taken up by scumbags and people will associate that car with a scumbag image because they are uneducated and only notice the scumbag element and have no interaction with proper car enthusiasts

Altezza is a higher maintenance car, with shorter service intervals compared to the IS200, once you service the car properly you shouldn't have any problems. put a supercharger on an is200 and you have a lexus with same bhp as Altezza but a lot more low end torque!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,917 ✭✭✭B00MSTICK

They look nice but not 10K nice, plenty of far better looking/performing cars available for that money.

What MPG are we talking btw?

The IS200 does not come with the beams engine, far more powerfull engine. They are overpriced but they are not going to cost the same as an IS200 when they have around 50 more bhp.

In saying that, was in one before, not impressed by them and can't understand why someone would want one, they're not that quick

How much would the whole supercharger kit cost ye fitted though. Add another grand on top of that to buy a PFC and get it mapped. It probably won't be all that reliable when your done either

    Please elaborate.

I've been running an Altezza for the past 2 years and the only non routine spend was a pair of balljoints at 100k miles. You must have bought a dog because neither Altezzas or IS200 could ever described as unreliable if given any sort of sympathetic maintenance

Remap a Tdi 170 and you've got the same power as an Altezza and double the torque plus 50+ mpg..

Mate of mine has a Toms 280 version (1 of 100 ever made). 280bhp, it is by far the quickest car i have ever driven. Thats over a Focus RS (old model) Jag XKR, Integra Type R, and a Skyline R33 GTR.

I dont think they are that bad. They are a nice car to drive.

Oh, speaking of shams driving them, i spotted a car full of travellers in a 09 Audi A4 yesterday.

Crazy money to buy a TTE super charger brand new about 4K sterling + map of the ECU that comes with them. Your then on the limits of the clutch

Stick a supercharger on an Altezza and you have oodles of torque and power but will require uprated clutch as standard one wouldnt be able for extra power, plus other supporting fueling mods would be recommended

Doing both will jepardise reliability and MPG and require even more maintenance.

Few places can get some great results with the remapping of diesels. My next car might even be a diesel!

Nice what colour is it? I know a lad that has a black one. The should have really made them like that from the factory! not just a 100 of them! 10 garages sold 10 each in Japan, very exclusive! not many genuine ones left

Most 170's have a sports suspension, upgraded tyres and brakes. easily handle an extra 40 - 50 bhp.

Tis a fine machine. He's looking at bringing in an R32/33 GTR now as well. Gonna hold onto the Tezza too!

This guy is a proper Tezza Enthusiast. The car is rarely driven, he has a van for his daily driving.

Not all tezza owners are shams and "creamers" lads. Seriously.

I was only out on the beer with him on saturday night!

There is a lot of generalisation going on in this thread TBH. What about the Audi A4's with the S4 kits on them? The ones with the 1.9TDi badge on one side, and RS4 on the other? I've seen some "really nice looking people" drive them too. But does that mean anyone who has one is a sham? Nope.

Or the 1.4 Golfs with 18" S8 Wheels on them? There's been some questionable characters spotted in them too, but i doubt every single person who has one is a sham either.

Granted, there are people out there who happen to drive an Altezza, and they give the car a bad name. But there are those kind of people who drive every car under the sun.

I think this thread is being a bit unfair to the Tezza owners, and the car itself being honest.
