    Seems people are always wondering about getting the seats in thier car recoverd, i got mine done (only took a day) Have to say i'm chuffed with the results;

Got it done in Ushers Island there on the Quays beside the Millenium(sp) Bridge, fitted for €400. It was either get this done or trade upto a Merc, but with the costs involved in fitting out the Merc to be a taxi, this was working out much cheaper.

Looks like a quality job. Nice one :)

Nice job, Sure you'd spend 100 quid on those Pleather argos covers that don't fit right!

Would ye consider getting the cloth on the door cards leathered as well??

Lovely job, not a bad price either.

I'm sure they'll be more up to the job for taxi use than normal cloth. I'd recommend Autoglym Leather Cleaner and Leather Restorer for preserving them. I've used it myself and it's good stuff.

By the way, did they not do the door cards as well?

I wanted to get them coverd but they we'rent too keen on them being done, they've said in the past they've done them but they always peel back from the cards with time. So i wasnt too pushed on getting them done, anyway would of taken longer to do, (dropped the car in @ 9am and picked it back up @ 4pm)

I dont like it. There appear to be saggy and loose bits plus the leather doesnt look great in the pics. but its an old car so I suppose its an improvement but I certainly wouldnt be happy with that fit and finish if I was fitting it to a newish car as an upgrade.

True enough but i suppose ya get what ya pay for, i'm happy with what i payed for them, i wasnt expecting factory finish on them.

Ya, they were cheap for sure. I guess they will be a big help when cleaning up the vommit on a saturday night.

it doesn't look great if it was an expensive job but for 400 quid its very good value. I've a soft spot for carinas...just dont do it to the velor in the carina II you have!

She looks well, door cards are fine as there a dark enough shade. I'd be happy to get a lift in her, if stuck by the road after breaking down (touch wood). :P

That looks well for the money. I've seen retro fit leather done for 2K euro and it's an absolute brilliant job. I'd imagine for that kinda quaility that's what you would be looking at paying. €400 for leather, who can complain:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,366 ✭✭✭ninty9er

I've been at my dad to set up his own company and do this fore years. He did it working for someone else about 25 years ago, and there's a big market to be had out there.

I'd say you could do the door cards yourself in an evening. If you stapled at the back they wouldn't peel back.

Not a bad job for the price.

Very nice job for €400, I'd be expecting that for the back seats alone, perfect for the taxi.

Who drives a Carina as a taxi or otherwise these days??? They stopped making them in 2000 so any Carina on the road is a minimum of 9 years but most are 10+, this is too old to be operating as a Taxi and there should be a law preventing old cars being used as cheapo taxis. I know those old Carinas and Corollas around the turn of the century were good and Toyota still sell using the reputation built up on them however since the Avensis came along from 2001 upwards Toyota went to crap and were never much good since.

The price was good but no matter who does it retro fit leather will never be as good, you'd be as well getting the interior out of a scrapped car or else buy a car with leather in it already.

I'd prefer to be picked up in a well maintained 1990s Carina than a filthy 2005 Octavia, tbh.

I'm no Toyota fan, but I know they stopped making the Carina in 1997.

Again, I'm no Toyota fan but I'm pretty sure the Carina E was never available with leather.

They stopped making them in '97 the Avensis took over, Ehh bollix to that comment about being too old, it's going for its NCT again in two weeks i'd put a wager that it'll fly through my car aint cheapo either, in fact its been mistaken for a 05 many a time by passangers and regulary commented on its condition, suppose you'd prefer a tatty 04 scudo thats never seen a wash?

i agree it should be rated on condition not age. I would rather be go an old well mined Carina than a smelly 08 Octavia

When i even hear the word taxi i think Carina/Avensis straight away. There a plenty of Carinas out there as taxi's.

I think the OP cleary stated he was going to buy a Merc, but the cost was alot more than the price of the leather.

    You sure that's leather?

Even if it isn't, €400 is very cheap for a job like that.

So you're saying a Carina is crap because of age but the new one would still be crap? What a load of old c*ck. I'd prefer being picked up in a nice clean Carina like this as opposed to a stinking, filthy 08 Avensis driven like a bloody maniac like I did this weekend that is probably working 24 hours a day double shifted to pay for it.

The Carina was changed to the Avensis in late 97. And so what if he's driving a Carina? What's your problem?

I don't have a problem... period. I do however think it is unappropriate to have cars as old as this being used as taxis that is all. But for what it is worth I think Volvoboy's car looks in good shape and is obviously well looked after as you can see from his sig and from the photo's, the guy just spent this money on leather seats for his customers comfort and his own cleaning costs. However taxi drivers like Volvoboy who take car of their cars like this new or old are few and far between.

There have been 2004 or 2005 cars crushed that were absolute poverty spec for taxis. These cars were built as taxis like the Dodge Chargers in the US which I took a trip in and the only way to keep a good fleet is to keep them very new with large turnovers.

1st part didnt make much sense there, Chargers?? I thought there were only Crown Vic's and Caprice's in the states used as taxi's?

The last part is a contradiction how the sweeny can ya have ''Large turn overs'' when your forking out for a new car every year?

Fair play for getting it done volvoboy. It's great to see taxi men taking a bit of pride in their car and ensuring better comfort for passengers. Its a very clean motor and I would happily pick that car over some manky newer model! Keep up the good work, we could do with more drivers like you!

Thats a very good price for that job, I am impressed.
I remember a taximan telling me about his plastic covered seats, he reckoned that he had to do it because women passengers that had too much tended piss themselves and it was too hard to keep cleaning the upholstery.
It was real neat job but not as stylish as leather.
Is the leather a shiny finish or suede? I can't see from the pics.
