Cardio and Weight Training

I have started weight training recently. I am using the starting strength programme so I have a day of in between sessions. On my days off I will be training for football. I have read about ‘cardio is the enemy of weight training etc’ so my question is this, by doing cardio am I loosing all the benefits I have gained by the weight programme or is it just that I wont bulk up but my strength will be improving. If so should I consider taking a protein shake to keep the body weight that I have at the moment. I am currently 12 stone and want to keep in around that but hopefully get more definition. My height is 5 10.

    Thanks in advance

Cardio uses up calories that could be used for repairing and building your muscles after a workout, so calories that could be used for strength/mass gain are being used for something else...ie cardio.

You're not losing all the benefits but you're overall progress will be somewhat retarded by the soccer training.

The advice is to eat more, take smaller jumps in the weights, and if necessary, add in a light week every couple of weeks.

Listen to your body, if you start dreading the sessions, they suck, and you don't feel better afterward, you've overreached and need to cut back.

Do you have to be one or the other?

Thanks will take that advise on board. Would taking a supplement make any difference?
