The difference with iTunes and downloaded movies is that people listen to their music on the go and did not want to be lugging around CD's (large and fragile)

You do not need to have a HD movie to watch a movie on your phone/iPod etc, so a HD download would be pointless.

Also, many movies are coming with a digital download disc for the movie. This can be played on iTunes or WMA so with BluRay releases you can get an extra advantage of having the movie on a hard drive

I've got a couple of BDs that have an electronic version or standard disk version of the film with them.

This should be the way forward for studios as the standard disk could be (in my case with kids stuff) sent to grandma's for viewing there, it would alsao allow them to keep the cost up for very little cost involved.

To be honest, no. If Blu Ray can contain that amount of information then I would prefer one disc for convenience. Look at the Dark Knight, there are damn all fine extras on that, no commentaries, no in depth documentary. The fact that it also gets a 2 disc blu ray treatment is just stupid IMO.

Edit - sorry I hadn't seen the previous discussion on this BTW so will look for it.

DVD could have held much more content at VHS quality, but higher quality picture takes up more space.

i wouldnt buy bluray its a load of **** because they "won" the hd war by marketing that they had larger disc capacity (it was a lie because a month after bluray anouced 50GB discs tosh anounced 51GB discs)

**** bluway - the 50GB discs cost more than say 15 or 20GB (or whatever they are)
So buying box sets and movies dont expect everyhting on one or two dics.

I bought firefly (my 1st bluray purchase) and 13 episodes on 3 ****ing discs? Even at 1080 they would not be 150GB to download the bluray of firelfy. I must actually check it out to see how big the combined file size is. Still sony lied thorugh their teeth about the size of their discs so dont buy their product.

Either just buy a Toshiba XDE500 http://www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/DVD-Players-Recorders-Upscaling/Upscaling-DVD-Range/Upscaling-DVD-XD-E500/?showBy=size (its a DVD player that upscales std DVD's to 1080 so why pay the extra for bluray?)

or else just wait a year or so for TV/movie downloads to spread - it will be cheaper because no packaging or retail markup (although i must admit i do like the look of a nice box set)

Alright i registered myself here just to respond to you. You are grossly misinformed. Number 1 Blu-ray could do 50 GB from almost beginning. Toshiba never released that triple layered 51 gig disc. 2 that XDE player is a scam. Its just like any other upscalable dvd player but with a better chip. 3 movie downloads aint coming anytime soon. The majority doesnt have enough broadband. 4 pioneer have announced 400GB discs. They dont have a street date yet but its anncounced. 5 you dont know jack **** about storage. Lossless audio and upped definition takes a up a fair share of space. Thats why the whole LOTR trilogy cant be on one BD. 6 almost all BD movies releases requiere dual layered. Atleast for those movies who are around 2 hours. 7 the price is what it is because BD is more expensive to make,it has a scratch resisting surface and YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. This is what you are:A former hd dud zealot,a joe 6 pack or a dvd hugger. Now im sorry if my english aint perfect but im in a rush.
