hi, I recently joined a gym and am going 3-4 times a week +/ a little swimming too, im doing 45 mins cardio or 45-60 mins circuit training, the circuits are v hard to do now due to crowding, one of the machines I like is the abs dipper thingy. but massively hard to get on, im looking to shape up [5'10 14st, down a few pounds already !!] and loose the belly, I have bought a good abs roller for home to do on the evenings, that im not in the gym or maybe a couple of set in the morning before work. what sort of sets should I be doing to gain effect, the DVD only shows techniques, which I am doing the basic ones, lower mid section, sides.
So far I've done set of 20-25, and 2-3 reps. im not too interested in doing any other exercises with the abs
Should I do more, less , slow, fast, mixing it up etc ?????? Should I be taking days off

Is your ab roller like this

    Or this?

The first is very good for working the abs, the second is not. Situps are not great on their own, but using the second device makes them even easier and less effective.

I am not sure if you are mixing up reps & sets. If you do 2 sets of 10 reps, it means you did 10 movements in a row, took a break, then did 10 more.

Situps and ab work does not spot reduce fat on your belly. If you were to do only 1 single exercise to lose the belly and work the abs I would recommend squats.

Does it make your abs ache at all? Some people see pain as feeling good, so Im not sure what way you mean.

@rubadub I tried one of those roller things yesterday. (first picture). It was hard on my lower back, so I wasnt keen to use it much. Would that be a common thing or just bad form on my part?

I see people at the gym using them all the time and just think, why? They do all the work for you and it even builds up mometum. Get the "wheel" ab roller.
