Euro Ruling Needed

So there I was out training in Howth last night because the coastal cycle track is full of muppets jogging and walking in the bike lane. Half way up the hill I happened upon someone who was wearing Ireland bibshorts. Now this person might very well have been a member of the Irish team, but that's not my question. The question is... is it acceptable to wear national jersey or shorts when you are not actually on a national team? Is this worse or better than wearing your Team Garmin kit?

MMMmm Can it be compared to wearing an Ireland Rugby jersey when you're not in the team ... ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,278 ✭✭✭kenmc

I think it's more like Drico wearing his Ireland Jersey down the pub than me wearing mine (although I only have a leinster one now that I think of it)

There are two implied questions here: is it Euro, and it is right? Some may argue that these are equivalent.

Since you can't wear cycling gear off the bike, if it's Euro-illegal to wear team gear on the bike, then you can't wear it at all. In which case the whole concept of mass-marketing of team gear is wrong, unless you expect people to put them up on their wall.

I think a simpler rule is "if you're wearing replica team gear, don't allow yourself to be overtaken, ever".

Unless they are on the Irish team or have been on the Irish team, then its unacceptable.

Howth/Clontarf does seem to be Fred-central. Saw a guy on a Colnago with Colnago tights, Colnago gloves, Colnago jacket and a Colnago beanie.

Maybe his name is colm delnago and that's just his nickname on all his gear

The same rules apply to national gear as team -you not a team member, you shouldn't wear the gear!

I don't agree. Surely one of the major reasons that sponsors get involved in teams is for the sales of merchandise. You don't have to play for Man United to wear a Man United jersey! Why is it different for cycling? If I want to fork out money for a pro team kit surely I'm doing my bit to contribute to the sport by keeping sponsors that little bit happier.

Besides, the pro team gear looks cool

    ABSOLUTELY ANTI-EURO

Although there is not rule pertaining to the wearing of replica team kits I'd agree that the wearing of any replica kit is a EURO violation. The sentiment of the Euro rules says that everything should be earned and by wearing team kit that you have not earned you are not Euro.

I feel the exception to the rule is where either you were given the team kit by a member of the team or you earn't it by riding with them during there summer training.

Can I pose another question? Good..........

Aren't the rules themselves ANTI-EURO is that they are US based?

I dunno, Euro is a state of being, you can't really define it. You either "are" or you "aren't".

Sorry Raam don't understand. My point was that as the people who came up with the rules are United States based are those rules almost invalid.

Part of the problem with pro cycling kits/teams is that they are named after companies. This used to confuse me no end as a kid. "What? They are called PDM, like the tape people?"

Maybe he picked it up cheap in a LBS sale and didn't know the "rules" I certainly don't!!?? Besides maybe it shows support for your country! And as said when you train for other sports you will always see people wearing the kit of the team they support!
And I'm never wearing anything with logo's on it when I go out on the bike in future!
Although are jerseys you get on charity cycles allowed?:)

what, just the bibshorts? not the full matching kit? well that's a fail for starters.

i'd agree with those who say that you wearing any kit that you have not earned is anti-euro.

only **** wear argyle. that's a rule that pertains to the world outside of cycling too, by the way.

    Ah, the thorny jersey question...

Wearing replica kit is kind of naff, a bit like wearing a Liverpool jersey to five-a-side or down the pub. In my own mind, wearing old or obscure team kit is a bit less freddish than wearing your 2008 Caisse d'Epargne gear with matching bibs, but at the end of the day it's probably all the same.

Something you should do it my book is wear replica kit on local turf. So, CSC jersey = fine, Sean Kelly/An Post jersey = no.

The big difference between cycling and other sports though is that jerseys are treated as prizes as well. So national champ, world champ, tour leader jerseys or national team jerseys are kind of verboten. It's like going to your local five aside with your Liverpool jersey and an FA cup winner's medal around your neck.

However, the one thing worse than hefty middle aged man wearning full Quick Step world championship jersey and shorts (which I've seen) is some pedantic git lecturing him on his satorial choices.

I think he had a raincoat on.

    Actually,another point...

In Germany Land, where my bro lives, cyclists don't tend to wave or give each other the nod. Some do, but mostly not. That's been mine and his experience. Compare that to Ireland where you are almost expected to shake hands as you pass. Was this just strict application of the Euro Rules by the Germans?
    23. You shall NEVER, under any circumstances, acknowledge the presence of a cyclist riding a bike costing less than €2000 in a public place. This could be severely detrimental to your image.

I was on the Cervelo, so I qualified no problem, but the bro was on his Bianchi which was under the limit. Was I being victimised or was I guilty by association?

Your guilty as charged. You saw him (bad enough), noticed what he was wearing (a sin after identifying the bike), and then bought it up in a forum (the killer blow). I hate to say it but you failed.... Your not EURO

In the same vain, shoud one wear manufacturers cycling gear, when you dont have the manufacturers bike/components.
I love Campag bibshorts. Very comfy indeed, but I dont have any campag components.
I wear campag winter gloves (highly recommend them) and Colnago fingerless gloves (also great).

    I really like this

me too. when i hear 'bic', i think razors though, not pens, so i think the kit would gel nicely with my plentiful leg-hair. and i like orange.

I think you're overthinking this one. You don't want people saying "look at that guy matching his kit to his shifters, do you?". It's one short step away from becoming Tunney's Colnago Man.

This whole Euro shart is really flipping the meaning of conformity on it's head. The idea is non-conformity by not wearing the team kit of other cyclists. But by obeying these Euro rules you're conforming to the non-conformity.

So I'm refusing to conform to the conformity of non-conformity and I'm gonna wear what I like. Why do people want to obey some random set of rules created by Americans anyway?

Because otherwise they'll send you to Guantanamo Bay and you'll have to wear an orange boiler suit. Which is definitely not Euro.

It's all just a bit of fun.
