Ultimate Sleeper

Ok, lets see who can find the ultimate sleeper, the fastest car that joe soap would never notice on the streets.

    I'll start with this:

    carlton.jpg

The Lotus Carlton was commissioned to be the fastest 4-door saloon in the world and indeed it was with 377bhp and 419 lb/ft torque from it's 3.6 litre twin turbo straight six, Contemporary road tests showed 0-100 in 11 secs, 0-140 in 21 secs and a top speed in the 170's, still very, very quick even by today's standards:D

I don't know how discreet that is, TBH. Mercedes 500E? Audi 80 RS2? Mk2 VW Golf Limited? E28 BMW M5? (Four of my favourite cars.:))

Not as fast as the Lotus Charlton but the following are good sleepers:

    Volvo S60r: 0-60 in 5.5s, 300hp, limited to 155mph.

    701356-2.jpg

    Mazda Mps (cheap): 0-60 6.4s, 256hp, 149mph

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mazda/Mazda6/MPS-Turb/200801191343853/advert

    Vectra VXR/OPC: 0-60 6.5s, 251hp, 161mph. Beware or torquesteer!

    I like sleeper cars!

2.3l turbo aero good for 140-150...

    6.5 seconds to 60.

Safest of the bunch shown so far, handles the best too id say.

p.s: no pics of my old 2.0... so wiki will do.

I know a guy with a 05 Honda Accord Type R. It's totally debadged and you wouldn't really pass any remark on it on the street but when you put the boot down it goes like the clappers! Not as fast as the Carlton or some of the suped up Omegas but it's certainly more than meets the eye.

Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo, the carltons rival back in the day. Was somewhat discreet without the Alpina stripes on it.
    0-60 5.2secs, top speed 181mph. 360bhp.
A ferrari Testarossa did 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and a 1/4 mile in 14.2. The Alpina did 0-60 in 5.6 (5.2 in some reports) and a 1/4 mile in 13.2 seconds

Audi S4, less noticable than the RS4 and a lot cheaper, 0-60 in 5.8s, 344hp and limited to 155. oh and 21mpg:eek:

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Audi/S4/4.2-quat/200801191364141/advert
And I'd say it wont sell for half that.

    De-Badge one of these http://www.carzone.ie/new-cars/BMW/5-Series/550I-SE-TOURING/83915120081201/

Apart from the exhaust pipes it will look the same as a 520d / 523i estate, but does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds.

    What about an Audi RS2?

    800px-Audi_RS2.jpg

In its day, it could out accellerate a McLaren F1, albeit only to 30mph (1.5 seconds) but you'd still embarrase them at the traffic lights.

I was looking at the same one. Miles are high and I would rather cream leather but it seems to be very good value. Full volvo service history too, cheaper than uk at the mo.

I "encouraged" my wife to buy a colt czt a few years ago,the amount of little twars in starlets and integras i burned was hilarious! Looked like a shopping car but was quicker than the new golf gti!! Rare as hell as only 5 were registered in ireland. She has a corsa opc now and the colt was better!!

    1.5 mivec turbo

My (biased) vote is for mazda 3 mps as thats my car, but I think the 2.5l turbo Volvo C30 has a shout at being the ultimate sleeper, I dont think I've ever seen one (but maybe I have and didnt notive because it was such a sleeper!)

It is easy to spot all major car companies "sleeper cars" I think, but when they are debadged all sleepers :-

Audi S range, Bimmer M range, Merc AMG range, Opel opc range, Ford ST (or RS) range, VW GTI range, Honda Type R, Renault Clio Cup or Trophy range.

This is my flat mates car (he has it remapped as well), not only is as quick as mine to 60 (6.1) but it grips like hell and handles like a dream! No ABS though, so bringing a change of underwear is essential!

I wouldn't call any of the above, sleepers. All look like the sporty variants of standard cars, bigger alloys, body skirts and splitters - even a 316i M-Sport looked like it would be fast, even though they were dog slow.

IMHO sleeper is the exact opposite, looks dog slow but takes off like a frightened rabbit an dissapears in to the distance.

Audi RS4 has to be up there with a shout. Simply because there are so many replicas on the road it takes a good eye to spot the real ones.

No it doesn't,the replicas are all crap looking and most have RS6 wheel plus most of the RS4 reps in this country are B6 A4s go figure??? lol, there is no mistaking a real RS4 when you see one in the flesh, and it certainly isn't a sleeper!!

I've never looked at an RS4 or S4 rep and went is it real or fake,i can't seem to tell.....:D

i drive a pretty normal looking VW bora (to the average motorists) it is 4wd though and will hit 60 in 6.7 secs and will keep going to 150mph + (autobahn driving) no bother,id like to think its a sleeper.

That's what I mean by having a good eye, most of the regulars here would be able to spot them a mile off but anyone else would just see it as another A4.

    Bora 4motion is it?

    Big time sleeper.

A friend of mine has a mk4 Golf 1.8T gti which has been remapped to 180hp, its a good sleeper as the rest of the car is bog standard. Fairly flat torque curve means it goes well in most gears at most speeds so it surprises a lot of other drivers.

By a similar token, your Bora 4Motion wont look like a sleeper to those with an interest in VW's etc. "to the average motorist" it may be a little more difficult to tell the RS4 from the Rep was the point being made above I believe.
I would argue that the ultimate sleeper has to be very quick, not just 200-250bhp quick. It would need to be 300bhp quick or else 250bhp in something that weighs nothing.
I remember on the way to the ring in 2007, we were on a motorway somewhere in the UK in an E46 M3. We came up behind an old Metro in slow moving traffic, you all know the type, old late 80's job bog standard looking. Anyway, traffic cleared suddenly after roadworks, 4 of us in the M3, and off goes this Metro like a bat out of hell, to the extent where the M3 had to work very hard to catch it as we werent expecting it at all. Next thing we are up well into tripple figures (in real money) and the metro is showing no signs of pulling into the left lane and giving up. Was a great laugh and to me something like that is the ultimate sleeper. To this day we never found out what was under the bonnet but it was quick whatever the hell it was.

Point taken about the RS4 reps so,and yes my bora 4motion would stand out a mile to a vw head.

I think the real sleeper is a car like that metro,a car with an engine transplant done on it.that is where you are going to get the most fun.
