    Depends.

    What age are ya?
    What night of the week?
What kinda music are you into?
How much money have ya got?

Well there's the old bar in DCU itself, it's on the campus so it's handy enough if ya cant be bothered going into town. There's also Matt Weldons "The Slipper" across the road from DCU, they do an awesome dinner and they do €3nights every Tuesday so there'll be a good crowd in that night.

As for other places you have plenty to choose from what with being so close to the city centre. Off the top of my head though Fibbers and Doyles tend to be popular, but that's just my experience I'm sure DCU students go plenty of other places.

Damn you. Now you've got me thinking of their lasagna.

I'd give the Woolshed bar in town (Parnell St, right next to Cineworld) a try - great atmosphere, they do karaoke some nights (not sure which ones), and serve pitchers of beer or cocktail. Works out fairly cheap.

DCU has a bit of a rep for not being the best for socialising -- I've heard various reasons for this from having no arts students hanging around to a large percentage of the students being from Dublin and living at home and still remaining in touch with their non-DCU friends on weekdays. The former is true, there's no arts degree, although I'm not sure how true the latter is. It could have more to do with being the smaller college in a big city.

In it's defence I've heard others say "it's what you make of it" etc. Since I'm a mature student who lives off campus I'm going stay on the fence and make no firm judgement call.

You have to at least question what is up when the Old Bar looks set to close. Sure, trends like drinking at home / on campus res and then going straight to nightclubs affect it, but still it's quite cheep drink compared to the city centre and it still is set to close...

    Pretty much spot on.

Couple that with the fact that the on-campus accomadation is so strict, it means only those living there get to party on campus (unless everyone goes in before 7pm yada yada).

The bar has the same sort of isolating effect. The sheer hassle of signing people in to the bar makes it not worth it - back in my day only one person could be signed in per card. Bar registration was 20 euro I think. If I could have signed in 3 or 4, it would have made it:

    a) a more attractive option to start my night out (with 4/5 of my friends from outside DCU)
    b) I would have been giving the bar the turnover of 5 peoples drinks.

I'm amazed anybody puts up with campus res. I couldn't believe the stories about security just walking into apartments until I seen it happen myself.

Yeah, and from visits to bars in other colleges such as Trinity, UCD, and Griffith, it looks like DCU is in the minority for having such a sign in requirement.

the grand social is very good night club with R &B + plus hip hop downstairs and house music upstairs every Thursday night from 11pm, Ids are essentials. see provider and housewerk for details on facebook for the cheaplist €6, normal price €8

There's the NuBar (the Old Bar is no longer in use) on campus which can be pretty grand, usually full around exams and matches (drinks are 3.50 upwards and they do lovely food). The SU also run a few balls during the year, such as the Orientation Ball, Fresher's Ball, Halloween Ball, Summer Ball, etc. Didn't go to them last year, but heard they were good.
For quiet drinks and a bit of cheap grub there's Matt Weldon's across the road from the Ballymun entrance. It's also not that far to Drumcondra, you have a few nightclubs there. A lot of DCU heads seem to go to the Big Tree, Alchemy and such. But there's a lot of different nights out in Dublin city centre to choose from, depending on what day of the week it is.

Great place that. Although I will say from the one night I went there it was the only place in the city I could get in having forgot my ID :p

DCU is fantastic for nights in my opinion, going into 3rd year now and the last two years were unreal. The best option is to have pre drinks in your apartment ( I lived in shanowen hall so not near as strict as campus), you can invite all the neighbouring apts over then get a bus or taxi into town.

There's literally something on every night for students, different clubs running different promos. They usually have the events on facebook so guestlists and cheaplists can be got on no problem (I'd rarely spend over a fiver into any club on a student night). Check out The Palace, The Village, Coppers (), D2 or Diceys..all decent clubs!

Its a pity Toxic Tuesday in the Nubar was shut down, hopefully they start it up again next year. It was perfect.. cheap night, no taxis and you always knew people because only DCU students were let in.

Look up these clubs on facebook, all the events and student nights will be put up when colleges start up again..The Palace, The Village, The Living Room, Coppers, D2, Diceys, Dandelion, Academy, Alchemy, Club M, Tripod..

    Well.

I will be coming from the north-west of Ireland to DCU and will be staying in Larkfield ( Hopefully).
I know a lot of people going to UCD and am pretty annoyed i didn't get the course i wanted for there.
Whats the general buzz like in Larkfield and on campus in general?
I am of a rambunctious temperment. Always up for the buzz... So In Larkfield itself... is everyone fairly sound and tolerant of those looking to enjoy university life? Stretching the boundaries of drunkenness?
If ya score can ya bring a girl back to your dorm room if she isn't actually staying in the same place?

You may be bit disappointed there. Theres a big rift between thos who want to party, and those who don't. The campus will have vents on, and theres a bar and everything. But security is strict.

Its for our own good, people need to sleep and they don't local kids wandering around the place all hours. but basically theres a no noise policy in place form bout half 11 till 7am. if your having a party then security can go in, shut it down, and possibly fine you. the common rooms in Larkfriend are always being shut due to people causing noise and damage.

At night past half 11 they close all the gates around the apartments so you can only get in through the sports building where they wil check your ID, mostly they only do this on busy nights, but if they are they will turn anyone extra you bring along. If you want to have someone over your supposed to book then in online from before 12 that day, and they take 5 euro form your deposit.

Its all to do with fire safety laws. can't have too many people there, and they need to know who's supposed to be there in event of a fire.

You say there's a big rift? Do you mean as cliques or whatever develop or whatever and there's a bit of snobbery?

I understand people need to sleep but surely in such a close knit environment everyone is friendly with everyone and most people go out?

So I take it it's not possible to bring a girl into the complex ? Even if you try to reason with security?

Cheers for your info... it's pretty invaluable

What I mean by rift is you get plenty of people, on here especially complaining about noise. The way the building is laid out sound really travels and the windows do nothing to keep it out, so people going in/out at night can really early wake up people by talking at anything above normal conversation level. When I moved in I was a really light sleeper, pretty damn annoying.

People are pretty nice and civil to each other though, I mean people who don't get on really just keep to themselves, and other people tend to respect that.

and yeah, getting someone in late at night is pretty difficult. I once had a freind who accidentally missed her last bus, no amount of reasoning would sway them. If you get someone in before they close up, and don't cause any noise disturbances you should be ok. same goes if its a quiet night and there aren't many other students around (such as weekends).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 568 ✭✭✭Dapics

Well if i got a girl in It would be hard to keep the noise level down if the walls, windows and building layout is as bad as you say :D

On the nightlife side of things... where does the musical people tend to go? or hipsters?

Most places do ask everyone for proper ID, they won't assume a student card means you're 18+. Most people who are 17 for a while either chance it and try to walk in as part of a group or else try and find a friend who they look vaguely similar to and borrow an ID from them :p

i look really young so i'd stand out a mile away :P.. Would the college bars ask for ID? :/

The college bar usually ask for your student card (well for big events anyway, the bar seems to be fairly lax at quieter times these days), and if you're underage they put a big shiny yellow bar on it that signifies that you're under 18. I was 17 for my whole first year so I just used a fake ID and pretended I was a guest the whole time.

think i'll be doin that so, thanks a million :)

when I was there I lived walking distance from campus so mostly just hit town, or Quinns or Big Tree which will be jammed weds/thurs with drunk country folk(head here to score). They also started charging full price in the student bars so obviously were going to shut down. When I was up there recently they had started to sell cheap cans and seemed to be lively again in the nu-bar but don't know if that is still the case.

Would defo live somewhere off campus like shanowen without the hassle of security and people who are there to study/sleep and not party

Nevermind got it thanks.. So does anyone know how strict Coppers are on ID/their Over 20s rule? I have their app and it says it's Over 20s Monday to Thursday and Over 21s Friday to Sunday.. I'm an 18 year old female, so I'd have ID to show but obviously not over 20 so..how likely am I to get asked for it, & how likely am I to get refused if I use my own ID? 'Cause it's not like it'd be illegal for me to be there

Theyre strict enough and you'll definitely get id'd. just borrow someones id who looks remotely like you. either way since youre a girl its about 200% easier to get into any club in dublin than if you were a guy. but there are loads of other clubs in dublin not just coppers. alt, lost society, dandelion, kitchen, purty kitchen, alchemy even the academy are all easier to get in if you dont have id and have nights for 18 and 19s which would be more first and second years (which i assume you are)

I kind of want to shout out to first years, when theres a lot of drinking events going on, know your limits and try to make sure someones looking after you.
A year or two one ago lad had an ambulance pick him after being found passed out in a bathroom with alcohol poisoning. Bad stuff has happened to people who were'nt carefull.
Don't get pass out drunk around people you don't know, same for lads, if your bringing a girl back, make sure she's perfectly aware of whats going on or you could end up in a lot of trouble.

Also drunk cooking has been the cause of nearly all the fires on Res in my time.
When I was in first year one night the entire place was evacuated for 2 hours, and one apartment destroyed cos a lad passes out with the stove on.

I got in there when I was 17 using someone else's ID so I guess that'll be the best option.. Don't know anyone in Dublin yet though so I have nobody's to use so far! Yeah I'm a 1st year
