Ok so I've decided I want to pick up a new skill every year from now on. This year has started with hypnotism and I'm already thinking about next year.

What (attainable) skills would you like to pick up ... and would you actually get off your ass and do anything about it?

    Driving? Instrument? Knife throwing?

    I fancy taking up drumming.

    Hmmm good question.

2008 saw me learn to drive and also get a qualification in shorthand so I'm all skilled out right now.

Might have to take some suggestions from the thread.

Why don't you just use rohypnol like a normal person?

    I'm actually looking to de-skill in 2009.

I have too many skills, most of which I have no time to implement and utilise. I sometimes feel guilty about this, so I am going to sell my idle skills off to the highest bidders.

They're not really new skills, but want to improve on vastly neglected skills, like learning French again, baking more, shooting more regularly and sewing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

    shooting more regularly and sewing.

Just reminds me of Rambo and when he was sewing himself up.

I've been meaning to learn to drive so I might get around to doing that. Origami would be pretty cool and could make doing the paperwork at work more interesting.

    I'd ideally like to:

Do some classes on creative writing
    same again for script writing
    Learn guitar properly
Some proper computer lessons, to actually know more about computers

But, alas, i am on the dole and no job in sight, so i'll just settle for being a failure.

Learn how to trade on forex properly (with real money)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,716 ✭✭✭✭Earthhorse

Need to finish learning how to drive. Long overdue.
Should learn to cook too. You know, maybe take a course.
Wouldn't mind picking up poker - Texas Hold 'Em.
Have an 8 track I haven't used (no mics). Should do that.
And maybe learn to play piano too. Always intrigued me.

Note: I'll continue to just post about these things and not do them if you guys do too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,716 ✭✭✭✭Earthhorse

Do some classes on creative writing
    same again for script writing

Whatever about script writing, where the course may cover the different formats for films, TV programmes etc. and technical stuff like that (which should all be available online anyway) you don't need to take a course on creative writing.

Start reading, start writing. That's about it.

Learn Spanish, and perhaps learn to drive.

I am going to finish learning to drive (no really! My test is coming up in February, and I need to practice three point turns)

And I should really learn how to cook. I mean, I can bake, but I'm not that great at making dinners

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

    I did that!

    Started 2 years ago.

First thing I did was started playing drums. I've kept it up, and I still play.

Then a year ago I took up martial arts. Still loving it, and passed a grading only 3 weeks ago.

Not sure what I'm going to take up this year. Though I'm starting a masters degree in march, so that might be enough for me.

Sold....gone to the man with the oversized shoe!

Seriously, i'd like to get one or two IT certs this year. I've been putting it off for the past 2 years (since college) and my skills in general have dropped, big time. I'd also like to get into some online trading. With the markets / economies so bad, shares are going for nothing. Many of the wealthy people I know (including my boss) have made their money from recessions. Invest when things are crap, sell off when things are good.
