my mates too much of a girl to post his own thread, so I'm doing it for him.
He is between 5'6" and 5'7" (on a good day).

He is looking at a PlanetX and is wondering what is the best size for him.
    Here is the sizing chart
    http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/?page_id=1049

It lists a 56 as XL, which seems odd, but anyway, would he be a Large (52) ?

He is also too afraid to ask how much building is required if he goes for the self build option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,860 ✭✭✭TinyExplosions

Don't you mean your 'friend' is 6'5" or just under..... :p

Afaik, there's not much building involved... I'd suggest you'd be able to help him, but after last night I'm not so sure :)

This is copied from the page you linked to above:

    Rider Height - 5′3″ to 5′8″ - SMALL
    Rider Height - 5′8″ to 5′11″ - MEDIUM
    Rider Height - 5′10″ to 6′2″ - LARGE
    Rider Height - 6′1″ to 6′6″ - X-Large

He should measure his current bike and compare the measurements...

Yeah I see that, I should have said Medium instead of Large. His old road bike (Giant) was a 54 so we ain't sure what he needs.

Isn't Kenmc a shortarse like said mate? He's a Planet X, so what size is his :)

Yes, last night was an experience.... glad it all worked out in the end though...

    Fu(k off I'm 5'9" 1/2.
    Mine is medium.
Said mate is welcome to a spin on a medium for size. If he has a better sense of direction on the southside than you of course.
edit : ah I see he lives in terenure so there's hope for him!

OK, this is taking on a life of it's own . Let's nip it in the bud. Tiny cut his hand while changing my track cog last night.

    Anyways, back to the PlanetX...

Is that what the kids are calling it these days.... "I'm just nipping out for a bit of 'bike maintenance' -will be back later" :)

@Kenmc -I apologise, at 5'9" you are not a shortarse, just have ducks disease (ie your arse is too close to the ground) :p

    5'9" AND A HALF!!!!

the half is very very important to the vertically challenged.

Actually it's a bit less than a half, twas a rounding error - 176cm is my height in proper moneys, which seems to translate to about 5' 9.3" in the old-fashioned format. Anyway, a medium fits fine.

The Planet X sizings are a bit funny alright. A friend of mine got one, he is a tiny bit taller than me and went for a large even though I suggested a medium. The reach on the bike is quite long even though they seem to be sized smaller.

Your mate is perhaps an inch shorter than me. I have ridden a planet x carbon SL (I currently own the Stealth Carbon but thats a different animal). Your mate needs the size small. No question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 305 ✭✭Billy Whizz

Looks like a compact frame to me, in which case the seat tube tube length will be 2-4mm shorter than on a "traditional" geometry frame. I've a compact Specialized Allez in which a "54cm" frame measures 50cm seat tube c-t, and a traditional "55cm" Kuota Kebel which actually measures 55cm seat tube c-t.

I'd suggest looking at the top tube length more than anything.

Right, girly shortass here, thanks Raam!!

I reckon the small is the one for me, I don't have a long torso so reckon that's the crucial factor. Going to use the bike to work incentive so along with whatever I get back from the insurance it will not be that bad a hit to the wallet. I'm looking at the C18 Offer SL Pro Carbon by the way.

One last thing, anyone know what amount of build is involved if you don't have them do it? Are frame & fork assembled? BB in place? Or is it a case of a boxfull of boxes and a few weeks trying not to end up with a load of spares at the end of it all?

Thanks for everyones help, I knew using Raams standing round here would get a quick turnaround on the replies. So I may be a girly shortass but I know how to get things done!

Nothing is assembled. You get a box of boxes. You'll figure it out !

I think it's now going to be a little project as well as a late crimbo pressie to myself so. Hmm, 6 pack and new carbon thing of beauty, could end in tears....

So I'm waiting to hear back from Planetx on what's going on with my new bike order (SL Pro Carbon Dura Ace C18 Crazy deal) - no sign of progress since I ordered on 29th December. I do see that the Dura Ace 7800 STI shifters are now listed as out of stock so they are not taking any more orders for the SL Pro Carbon C18 offer at the moment.

Has anyone had a similar out of stock scenario with Planetx after ordering? Would they generally wait to get stock, throw in an upgrade (to 7900 Shifters if compatible), or would I expect to get Ultegra shifters with some cashback?

I'm barely 5'7. I have a 50cm Crosscheck, perfect fit though I had to play about with various stems to get a nice ride.

My Giant Bowery frame size "Small" (46.5cm?) and has a great ride position out of the box.

After 3 emails and 2 voicemails, they have just got back to me on email to say:

"Your bike should be built up tomorrow, we have been waiting for the frames to arrive.

    Kindest regards

Wouldn't have hurt to apologise for the delay but glad to hear there's progress and no mention of a shortage of shifters.

Surprisingly, yes! Just eager to get my mitts on the bike - have my own bike cleaned and wrapped up to be sold but the guy is now not coming to collect it till the weekend so I'm out of action at the moment. 14 days with no word is a bit rich though in fairness.

I had to wait 3 days for them to even confirm my order when I made it in November, bike is still in boxes, though. Must get it built soon and give it a try out:D

    Hey Guys,

I am thinking of upgrading my road bike (Specialized Allez Double) and it seems like this Planet X Ultegra build is great value. I am looking to spend around €1,000 with the Govt. Cycle Scheme. Would you guys recommend it as a suitable upgrade to my current bike?

I started a good bit of long distance cycling last year and did a couple of 100km spins last summer (although I need to spend more time in the hills!). I am planning on doing the Wickow 200 this year and possibly more sportives.

Also, I have no problem in attempting the build myself. I have this toolkit at the minute. Does this have all the gear I would need for the build?

    Cheers!

So after many emails back and forth with Planetx I was planning on working from home tomorrow to finally receive my new bike so that I could get out on it at the weekend but then I got this mail today:

"Your bike will be dispatched today but you wont receive it now till Monday I'm afraid. Also there has been a change in spec, we were out of stock of the Dura Ace front mech so we have had to down grad you to the Ultegra but we have upgraded your chain to an Ultegra and have added an extra bottle cage for you.

    Sorry for any inconvenience."

That means I'll receive the bike on 19th January after ordering it on 29th December.

I don't know much about the difference in Dura Ace vs Ultegra front mech and likewise the difference in value of the 105 and Ultegra chains but a quick check on Wiggle shows the chain upgrade and bottle cage would just about cover the difference. Any thoughts on whether this is a reasonable solution from them - I think the compensation should be a bit more than the difference in value if they're looking for a satisfied customer?

Right, the saga continues....it's now looking increasinly like the courier (DPD) has either lost the bike or had it stolen. I was informed today, one week after it shipped with premium 2-day delivery. It's not even the theft or delay that annoys me most - it's the disgraceful level of customer service provided by Planet-x that has me most annoyed.

I don't wanna go into all the full details as it'll only annoy me but when a customer's calm request for an apology or some form of compensation (e.g. at the very least the shipping cost should be refunded - Planetx should really insist on a credit from DPD in addition to their claim for the lost bike cost) is interrupted with a rant starting with 'you'll get the bike you paid for next week, what's the problem?' and you have to say 'Can I finish a sentence please?' 5 times before the supposed manager on the other end allows you speak, something seriously is up. Turns out the customer care email is actually manned by the receptionist and it seems she's had no training on this area, so I don't think it's her fault.

I'm annoyed with myself for not taking a principled stand and telling them just to refund my payment, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere near as good a deal as this around at the moment and I'd lose 4.5% due to exchange rate changes, so I'm reluctantly going ahead with it.

Posting to vent in part but also to let anyone thinking of buying from Planet-x what my experience with them has been.

I think you should cancel your order in principle. Crap customer service and bad delivery don't go hand in hand. BTX, Cyclogical have some good ultegra bikes around 1300-1400 EURO mark.

Companies shouldn't just muck you around. Last year I had a similar problem with a courier who lost something. The company immediately sent me out a replacement, value around 900 pounds, express courier so it arrived the next day from UK. Then two arrived and they arranged to pick it up. They were good to deal with and thats how web companies should be.

I get the feeling Planet X blame you.

nice of them to ask if its okay. I don't think its right to take orders for something that they can't ship.

Shimano Dura Ace 10 Front Mech
    Stock: Lots

Get them to put one of them on the replacement one they're sending...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

Cheers lads, I've emailed them to say put the DuraAce front mech on if it's not too late.

I probably should have cancelled (though I did agree to go ahead yesterday so won't go back on that) and usually would do in these circumstances. But I sold my bike a while back when the new bike should have been arriving so just want to get this over with and have a new bike hopefully arriving when I get back from business travel on Wednesday. I doubt the Cyclelogical bikes are carbon frame with Ultegra for that price? The €1100 this bike cost was really at the top end I wanted to spend anyway.

I'm more just shaking my head about it today than being angry - their frontline customer service person is an untrained receptionist and the escalation path was to an agressive warehouse guy - it became pretty clear they have no notion of what customer service is so it became futile to discuss it with them. But yep, I'm annoyed I'm still giving them my money but I'm so busy at the moment I don't want to cause myself even more hassle just to spite them.

I notice this SL Carbon Pro C18 Crazy Deal bike is no long offered - here's hoping they only have parts for the new offer available and are reluctantly forced to upgrade some parts!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Front mech is probably not a vital component (shifters, rear mech and brake would all be above it) and you prob wouldn't notice the difference too much between Ultegra and Dura Ace but I would be a bit annoyed on principle, I'd prefer the right front mech as much for aesthetics and my mental peace of mind as anything else.

There is very little difference between a 105 and Ultegra chain and probably Dura Ace for that matter. They are all exactly the same weight and many suspect the only difference is the name engraved on the links. I hope it's a carbon bottle cage!

Sorry to change subject and not sure if my info is too late

    I am 5ft 8 and bought a Planet x

I went for the small and its perfect for me. Might have gotten away with the medium alright but I accepted that I am a short arse and should buy a kiddies frame ha ha

If you want to try it for size just shout

So I thought this day would never come but I collected my bike from the depot and had a quick look and it does look pretty damn slick!

Thought the black paint job would be dull but it has a nice patterned metallic effect thing going on. Even the seatpost looks good.

Damn those tyres look pretty slippy though....ordered a pair of these straight away.

Looking forward to getting it setup this evening or tomorrow morning. Is there much hassle fine tuning the gears after attaching the bars - never done that before?

I'll also be replacing the rear cassette - looks like the boy Sheldon has a good guide here - should I be confident enough tackling it with that info and the right tools?

Anything else I should be aware of when setting up the bike for the first time?

I just reclaimed my Planet X bike from my Mothers, I bought it last October and it is still in the boxes. I am going to make a start on it this weekend, hopefully. I was going to get it built for me, but I think I may enjoy it more having put in the effort myself.

I have the tools to help you change the cassette if you want to borrow them -- being in portmarnock and all.

The gears may be set up OK already as they are building the bike but they should be easy enough to adjust if necessary.

Changing a cassette is pretty easy but why are you doing this? If you are going to larger cogs you may need a longer chain although in practice not unless you are cross-chaining big-big.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

Cheers for the tips. I think I have the tools needed but fair play for the offer scottreynolds, thanks.

I bought an 11-25 cassette based on stuff I'd read on here as it seemed to offer an easier gear at the bottom end which I need for the hills and more power at the top end which might come in handy. I'd prefer these options to having more seamless transitions between the gears within a narrower range.

Did I take things up completely the wrong way or does it actually sound like the right thing to do for me?
